The mother in this video uses Windows XP (2001) as her main OS dual booted with Elementary OS (a fast Linux distro). Would you like to see her try out Linux, Mac, Windows or other operating systems through history such as OS/360 (1966)? Then give your suggestions in the comments section. Give this video lots of likes, views, favorites and comments if you want my mum to try out other operating systems. I am open to any operating system suggestions you give especially if these videos go semi-viral (over 100,000 views). This channel is dedicated to me "introducing" people (mum, dad, me) to different operating systems they have never used before and leaving them to suffer in confusion struggling to do anything in an unknown computer environment... or see if these other operating systems are better than Microsoft Windows. - Zábava
Just amazing how your mother doesn't get bored of all of this! She's such a cool woman.
May be his mother just a computer programmer?
Your Mums computer skills have improved so much over the short time of having this channel, she has so much more common sense on whats going on and how things work.. If this video was several months ago she would of never of found the text editor window when she minimized it, and wouldn't know how to close things because of the different x button, its really nice to see your Mum enjoying making these videos and learning things too! My Mum would not have the patience to do this at all haha :)
12 years later, windows added muliple desktop. Bravo windows, I have no words
Now 16 years later
love your videos. I love the way you guys explain the operating systems in a simple manner. also, i'd like to see a video of you guys trying out windows 10. I'm looking forward to it ☺
Hi Phillip And Diana!! am a 13 year old boy in the UK I love technology like you do !! I can spend hours exploring and modifying different operating systems!! do another youtube account and vlog every day thats if you remember and not to tired...+osfirsttimer
Until now, I had never really understood the whole, unix-like, real unix OS thing. Today thanks to you it's pretty clear. Thanks!
I like your videos. As someone like you who knows a bit more than usual users I feel like you are able to come down to their level. Some folks might make remarks about the exact conditions and facts but in my mind you do great.
When you know a lot sometimes it can cast shade on those who don't. Language matters and no matter what the video tells me I can see why and how you say what you do. Keep up the good work. I am glad your mom has you to influence her experience and broaden her horizons.
>"Edit this bit out!"
Doesn't edit it out.
XD
More than most, these videos are so helpful for people like her mum, who want to use a new OS.....
Loving the bloopers! and the professional green screen of course!
While I'm no Unix/Linux expert, I still am quite knowledgeable using the various OS versions available. Even so, I just wanted to say that your videos are great to watch and very informative even for a relatively experienced user. Keep up the GREAT work guys!!!
When you click certain menus it seems to do that in this os
Mac OS X 10.7-present have the mission control, which allows you to have multiple desktops. Also in windows 10, it has multiple desktops. They do not, however, have custom icons. Very cool OS. Thanks for doing this one, man!
Wolf Warren There were multiple desktops in 10.5
Finally a new video :)
I love the reoccurring “Let’s check it out” blooper reels on this channel.
It's cool you can see the OS through the logo of my shirt almost like it's a window into my body showing what operating system I run... I wouldn't be running Unixware if I was an operating system though ;)
Yea... you always seem to notice when I do. Its just so easily accessible to do it that way since I know those pre setup VMware images will always work without a problem.
Keep up the good job !! Waiting for this post !! A+ thump up
Hey Philip, Thanks for the video. Is there any way I can get the ISO? I would love to taste it of my own!
It's unbelievable how young you are. You're so young, and you already know so many operating systems. And it's more amazing that your mother is willing to learn about all those operating systems too.
He's interested in this kind of thing. He does his research, and any young person could do it as long as they were interested in doing so. Not many people are interested in doing what he does, so he is just one of the few who aren't too lazy to do so. But I understand what you mean, it is pretty awesome to see someone working hard like he does.
yeah, People like OSFirstTimer make me feel so old. And I'm just 33. As Louis Armstrong used to sing "I see babies crying. I watch them grow. They learn much more than I'll ever know, and I think to myself 'What a wonderful world!'
I've been thinking about doing it in 1080p but my monitor can't even display 1080p (or maybe its my graphics card) and the time it would take to upload 720p would just be a nightmare. My camera can record in 1080p HD but honestly the difference is barely noticeable.
Yea I had 6 desktop environments on my Linux hard drive (1 terabyte) at one point but due to it messing up elements and icon sizes across the environments I just decided to stick to gnome 3.6
We focus on mainly desktop os's rather than phone or mobile ones since we like to test operating systems with the "right" hardware.
Does anyone know where to get those icons Phil showed?
This was uploaded on my birthday
Well CDE has certain features similar (especially the window buttons and border as well as the minimize to icon feature) to Windows 3.1 from the early 1990's so it makes sense that CDE is quite old and that Solaris tried to phase it out in 2001.
First of all, Thanks Phil for repling and second, can you make a video about how to install FreeDOS on VirtualBox? If you did that would be AWESOME!! Thanks for making really cool videos! I have learnt A LOT from you.
Diana commenting on the beep feature....I don't think she'd EVER want to exist in a programming class. Every single class I've been in has used a beep function to annoy everyone within a mile radius of the lab, and it's awesome, and the teacher/prof always allows it because we're programmers.
Yep she has tried it and I even tried it myself in the "can ms-dos replace windows 7 video"
I just do an hour or so of research before making each video... I still make mistakes sometimes and leave out some details accidentally. The RISC OS video was a prime example of how I had done lots of research but still annoyed professional RISC OS users with slightly lacking information in some areas of the video. My main issue was forgetting to middle click in RISC OS at some points while remembering to at others.
I was thinking maybe Solaris 11 since I mentioned Solaris in this video
Is it bad that my ears can hear frequencies out of the normal human range? I can hear dog whistles and I understand why dogs hate that stuff.
I heard that kids can hear more frequencies than adults.
That's pretty normal for younger people. If you stay away from loud noises you might be able to keep that ability as you get older.
should my os be unix based or based off of my things in my mind?
Well, just to let you know, CDE was descended from an older interface called Motif, which Microsoft had a hand in developing the look and feel. Actually, OS/2 1.3 was the first to adopt the look, and Microsoft and IBM made the standard for UNIX so that UNIX users would have a decent GUI and not feel out of place. Remember, this was the compatibilty craze of the 1980s, so they wanted to make sure that users would be able to use all of the successors of DOS, whatever they may have become. --Kyle
I don't know where to start! I know that you are comparing ancient OSs, but it is obvious that more modern OSs will be better evolved than something from 1993(or so) which is when CDE came to the fore. It was designed by committee, and ended up being an evolution of Motif and HP VUE which were older still. At the time, it used IBM Presentation Manager window decorations, which became common across many different window managers including OS/2 and Windows NT desktop, which ultimately spawned Windows 95. So it is no big surprise that the decorations and actions were broadly similar.
Although I really hated it, it was a step forward for graphical interfaces on UNIX, and can really do so much more than you could demonstrate (for example, the action manager allowed you to configure triggered actions for various events, including network related events from other systems).
Remember, it pre-dated KDE and Gnome, and it was a pretty much common interface on all major UNIX varients from IBM, DEC, HP, Sun etc. And it's close to 20 years old now!
IBM still ship it as the supported graphical interface for their AIX systems, although you are unlikely to use one of those as a personal computer!
The multiple desktop environments and workspaces like that are in GNU/Linux distros too.
Can anyone help know the difference between SCO Unix OpenServer vs UnixWare?
I guess I'm quite late, but here it is: the original SCO OpenServer is the operating system originally known as Microsoft Xenix, then renamed SCO Unix after being acquired by Santa Cruz Operation and later renamed to OpenServer. This is true for OpenServer up to version 5; OpenServer 6 is based on UNIX System V Release 5, while OpenServer 10 is based on FreeBSD.
UnixWare is the primary distribution of UNIX System V Release 5 (SVR5), originally developed by UNIVEL (a joint company of Novell and AT&T) and later sold to SCO.
the flickering has to do with the fact that the camera is American made but the computer is connected to the Australian power grid, so they alternate at different frequencies. tom scott has an interesting video on it.
You live in Australia now? I thought you were from the US. So you did end up moving to Australia?
you can install several Desktop environments on Linux and other OS`s as well. Mageia for example asks you which Desktop environment you want to use and gives you the option to install several. i personally install KDE on every Linux system i have, though i often install more for variety and having separate Desktop environments for separate purposes is pretty cool (KDE for work, Unity for browsing, Gnome for Entertainment. etc)
what linux distro should i choose?
It's great that there is HD now but it's always sad that the CZcams 720p is never as good as the 720p of the original video file. CZcams is always decreasing the quality of these videos and it really annoys me. At the same time though peoples internet would just die with these episodes being 500 megabytes to 1 gig each in 720p with the original 720p quality file size. Completely uncompressed this video is 77 gigabytes so let's just say this video is highly compressed! (only 200 meg on CZcams)
Yes!!! It's Sunday 2 weeks later :D
can you test out windows 8.1 review it has the start button back
just note that seasons and different desktops is a standard features for almost any unix derived os(mac is the black sheep)
Did you checkout a old Knoppix? It uses KDE. I've got 2 old CD's from old PC-magazines at the age of ~2002.
good video!!!
Yeah they should try that. KDE and Trinity are like Gnome and Mate. I heard there is Kubuntu with Trinity desktop but there should be Ubuntu with Mate desktop, and it should have all the themes from previous Ubuntu versions, including the one from 5.10.
let's check it out
mate
Your mom is awesome!
I would like to see her try Minix3 and CP/M.
Could you try AmigaOS4 i've only just heard about it via researching :)
Where can I get a copy of this Unixware?
Sorry for my late answer , I just saw your comment now.
If you want it , I can share it to you via drop box.
awesome video what will be next probably i want Damn small linux to be next or opensuse
Were did you get this version of UnixWare can't find it anyware
Do the Raspbian OS if possible
I wonder how many operating systems are there
Haiku or Amiga OS 4.1.6 ?? She tried Workbench 1.x something and BeOS .. Time to try the latest :-)
I've already thought of that... I use that method on the terrified mum channel but it doesn't really work for this channel. Also at many points fine details need to be seen on the screen and at points the picture in picture may cover up important elements... and don't even get me started with issues of getting screen recording software for each operating system! And synchronising highly edited video streams would be hell!
You could try Mandriva. I'm not sure which one has KDE 2, but it is a Linux distro with KDE add default.
19:28 My dog was sitting next to me and started scratching my speakers when you did that XD
Hey OSFirstTimer, I have two questions.
1. How big is your computers harddrive?
2. Where do get all these oses?
(Like the ISO files and such)
Unix, the king of tech
Hm not to bother you Phil I was just woundering where you found that neat chart of the Unix Family.
can she try windows server 2003
I know it's been so many years, but nobody would happen to know the song at the start?
OK SO I've installed windows on my mac using bootcamp and its workin perfectly fine but i just got given a Ubuntu 13.04 and i don't know whick one i should use because i love the freeness and simplicity of Ubuntu but i like the capability and compatibility of Windows 7! Plus i dont know if Sony Vegas Pro 12 will run on Ubuntu! Can someone please help me im in quite a pickle!
It truly would be way too difficult for her. Even I had a quick look at it and struggled just to get the interface to load and even looking at tutorials on how to use the interface just made me extremely confused.
Did you try a KDE 4 distro like K-ubuntu or slackware?
sorry asking this, you mean gnu as an OS or gnustep (window manager)?
It's not good to watch it now though... CZcams hasn't rendered it in HD yet. I'd wait for HD if I were you...
Whats the song at 0:00 ?
Ubuntu has multidesktops.
And a tip for your surface pro: Make things larger. Go to Start search, type in "make text", touch settings, and click "Make text and other items larger on your screen.".
17:56 befuddled pointing at the nsmail folder and not knowing what the heck that was. Heh, this was pretty common in Linux land in early 2000s, I saw several newbies try out Netscape and, in a few moments, wondering what the heck "nsmail" was. People don't react too well when random folders mysteriously appear. =)
I know... I've read into all that and how they say if you are only going to say "Linux" you might as well say GNU instead because Linux is just the kernel rather than the OS... honestly I just call it Linux because its known more widely as just Linux and shorter to say and type than GNU/Linux.
I think you should use some kind of transitions... the videos are great but the editing looks a little bit rough.
Keep up the great job!
LG Flatron W2286L
good videos lol, these 2 lines were brilliant:
"How come you cant just have a normal calculator in there?"
"Because these people using these aren't normal people!"
Those eyes are actually the thing she saw on kubuntu, or the ones on kubuntu were a close.
There is HD now
HD Arrived !
geoworks ? that was my first ever desktop shell before windows 3.11
I loved to use KDE2 on Red Hat!

Hi love your videos, can you give a try to Apple A/UX and SGI IRIX 6.5..
Thanks...
New video!
It might under Wine. In linux we have KDENlive and Openshot as the main movie edditors. Windows Media player works in Wine.
Remember there's a new video every fortnight.
olpc os please
She should try out Icaros Desktop, a next gen amiga os
if you want to know why it was flickery. its because you needed a higher flicker rate. But you have fixed it now :D
oh, well it really depends on the distro that you use. Some include some features like wine, chromium, Mozilla Thunderbird, and lots of other stuff. I haven't really explored much yet.
SUSE 8.0
2002 Linux OS to use KDE2. Also show her KDE 1 on SUSE 6.0
She has tried Kubuntu 12.10
You should give her a shot at MS-DOS! I tried it and I honestly could not do anything. It was hard to install...
WATCHING THIS LIVE???
144p?
i believe you should write the iso link and post the download so we don't have to ask "Where did you get the iso? where did you get it? Where did you get it?"
i think that she should try v8.0 or v9.0 with kde2
Nvm, Unixware looks like one of my favourite OSes look-wise. (3.11 is probably my favourite Windows-OS look)
i can imagine his mum getting incredibly frustrated at him after some of these videos xD
