    This is one of the best Gung Fu styles. This is southern mantis. Attacking the wind pipe is highly effective especially with strong fingers. As for MMA well I've trained in it and won some submission grappling competitions, and comparing both is like comparing Apples and Oranges. A lot of Gung Fu is not built around a challenge match where both opponents are ready to fight, it's more about doing as much damage as possible before the opponent is even prepared for the fight. Styles like White Eyebrow for example were not designed for self defence they were designed to kill someone fast without warning and get the he'll out fast. Nearly all of those moves are banned in professional MMA fighting for a reason. People also forget MMA is not a style it's mixing martial arts together. UFC fighters are going to win nearly all ring fights and most street fights because they are professional fighters, that doesn't mean that crushing someone's wind pipe doesn't work in a fight. Most people who do traditional martial arts are not professional fighters, and just because they'll generally lose to a PROFESSIONAL UFC, or Bellator fighter doesn't mean grabbing or punching someone in the Trachea doesn't work. Additionally a lot of cultures use weapons as a first resort and not as a last resort.

    • @RR-ti8yb
      @RR-ti8yb Před 6 lety +1

      Arm Strength Trainer A UFC or MMA fighter will not win against someone who practices SPM. They only use moves that are legal and within the rules of the sport whereas kung fu uses deadly attacks and incredible footwork speed. Saying that some Americanized bullshit fighting style will beat an art that's been perfected and around for centuries is ignorant and stupid.

    this for me is one of the most effective and mean styles of kung fu. I trained in shaolin for a year and after that i did another year in Wudang shan. I was so dissapointed to see how the new ''monks'' in shaolin have forgotten the martial side of kung fu. They can do the form perfectly but when it comes to fightin they use Sanda.. then why the hell are you spending so much times in learning all these forms and movements if u dont study the application. This for me is the real side of gong fu , the martial side...fuck all the jumpy wushu shit. if u want to be a athlete its ok, but not if you are a martial artist

    • @sifuraul
      @sifuraul Před 9 lety +6

      I can answer that question. Its all about distance and skill of opponent. Sanda, much like boxing or kickboxing is effective in all arts and sports as well as the street when facing an opponent that is just as skilled as you. If you nottice Praying Mnatis techniques are very good inside techniques. But can also be triggered from a boxing stance with good footwork. Its all in the practitioners choice. I know because I practice and teach Praying Mantis as well as Xingyi, boxing, kickboxing and Taijutsu. does this help somewhat?

    • @BuddhaVybezProd
      @BuddhaVybezProd Před 9 lety +6

      well my actual point was about many people even in china in dengfeng shaolin wudang everywhere ive seen it all the time. they spend their entire day learning all these wicked kung fu movements and forms etc. but when its sparing time , u use sanda? so why spend my time doing all these moves if i dont know the actual aplication to them, this is why mantis is so much more effective than nowadays shaolin gong fu. back in the day im sure it was very powerful in combat. , today its nearly a dance show.

    • @sifuraul

    the man presents bridge and the other goes off of with a barrage. what if one simply does not let him and returns the attack? this is just another question posed. if you are of a refined skill level you could begin to see what im talking about.

    I have heard that they focus on foot traping too and use the momentum benefit to you, it's like attack and trap them in the same time. In higher level they practice breathing to use your internal power to deliver through your punching, it could be deadly. (sorry for my terrible english)

      The whole body is used as a bridge, there is a strong focus on grappling and striking simultaneously from a standing position although the system works just as well from the ground its just that since it was designed for battefield use you want to eliminate each opponent as quickly as possible and thats a bit harder from the ground so if you do end up on the ground you want to control your opponent or finish them as quick as possible and then assess other risks in your environment.

    • @symbolsarenotreality4595
      @symbolsarenotreality4595 Před 7 lety +1

      The daphragm is a powerful muscle and helps develop the short power in most internal systems. Relaxing the diaphragm builds up a force behind it and raises the blood pressure in the body.
      Deep breathing uses the diaphragm to control the breathing, blood pressure and increases oxygenation of the body which increases power, endurance etc as well as the direct spring like force of the diaphragm itself which can be sent to any part of the body.

    @AdamantForce Před 9 lety +3

    This is so much of a mystery for some reason. There are tons of junk schools in Los Angeles. You can learn a watered down version of almost any form but SPM. I trained under Dr. Ron Chapel in the 80's and learned the basics, and mid-level techniques. Developed a great core that has kept my body limber and healthy. And it helped my interest in martial arts bloom. I trained under a private instructor in the art of Muay Thai for 3 years. But had to stop training due to life changing. (off to college and moving, bills bills bills.) I then ceased training all together because in that time period, and now, all I see are MMA dojo's, and Brazilian JiuJitsu. If I wanted to floor hump guys, well there is a freeway of doing that, I could just go to jail. (LOL) And MMA (no offense to anyone who likes it) is NOT mixed martial arts. Its the newest way white America has found to come out on top over everyone else. You never really see any martial arts performed, just your average round house (or heavy kicks) and slugs (straight punches), you dont see any passing and blocking, but you see tons of hugging, and holding, (Sorry LOL). 75% of the fights are on the mat. After watching a UFC fight that was CLEARLY a victory! By all means, and it being ruled a DQ on account of the fact that a martial artist used his training and attacked as instinct told him (elbow to the head) after being elbowed in his head and face by his opponent. This guy was no noob, he was the Thai champion twice over, and the powers that be basically showed that MMA is definitely not Mixed.
    And to this day I can only sit and watch this incredible form on youtube. -.- So sad I would love to start another discipline and continue all the way through. And I have a young son that I want to share the joys and benefits of martial arts with. I hope this form makes itself a little less scarce.

    • @giusti825
      @giusti825 Před 9 lety +5

      AdamantForce So much wrong with this. 1st elbows are not illegal in mma. Many muay thai practitioners are successful in mma because it is an effective martial art that is practiced with live sparring and competition, which helps more efficient technique develop and simultaneously shedding techniques that are less effective.
      What MMA has shown to a large extent, is that the martial arts that are all about forms and tradition tend to be ineffective vs arts where sparring and competition are encouraged.
      With the exception of eye gouging (for obvious reasons), testicle shots (ill admit this is only illegal so the sport could get sanctioned) biting (sanitary reasons) and fishooking, almost any martial art in the world can use their techniques in the cage. If the martial art is effective, it will be proven effective. If it is not or it is incomplete in terms of defense capabilities, that will become obvious aswell.
      MMA has really just shown what works and what doesn''t in live scenarios and which martial arts are really business scams selling ineffective techniques to their students.
      You may not like "floor humping," as you called it, but Jiu Jitsu, Catch Wrestling, Sambo, Freestyle Wrestling and Greco Roman have been proven (in live competition against other martial arts) to be extremely effective, often with the smaller, weaker competitor being the grappler who defeats a larger, stronger opponent.

    I just want to point out that Henry Sue developed a more artistic and softer version of Tong Long, they're not the best, not even close to it. Circular motion delivers less momentum, in your more traditional tong long you're being taught to kill them in your first two to three strikes. There's no fucking about or grappling, you beat the other person to death with your palms or the bottom of your fist before they can even blink. You condition your body to a point where they'll break their own hand trying to hit you. I can't really even tell if these guys are training properly or not, some of the masters from Hong Kong look really skinny because they train their tendons as opposed to their muscles, but I really doubt every single one of these guys are doing that. Otherwise they should look like a roided up pit bull from all the training they should be doing.
    Edit: I mean I guess it's a lot better than the softer sport based martial arts like Taekwondo and Ju Jitsu, but it's still a massive insult to the guys who originally taught them.

    • @davidnovakovic6027
      @davidnovakovic6027 Před 6 lety +1

      This is a really interesting perspective. I'm going to jump in here before the trolls do. Clearly you know a bit about the style. I'm far from senior in the system, but I can say for sure that we still do lots of conditioning. I think we train a more circular style and incorporate cotton palm and tai chi, but I think this is to train sensitivity in a real fight. I don't know enough to say which is better.. I know what we get told in class, but I'm not going to reproduce that here with absolutely no real world experience to back it up :) The circular style helps chain strikes, the sensitivity obviously is know when to counter hard vs strong. I'd be surprised if traditional chow gar didn't teach some form of sensitivity... soft beats hard and vice versa. Maybe it's just a spectrum. We don't train grappling in the traditional sense, more trapping/locking/covering... and absolutely the aim is to bridge gap and kill/maim within the first few strikes.
      This video is very old, before the name "circular tong long" existed i think. So things have progressed and even some of the people in the video are no longer part of the organisation. Even so, they are masters, so I think it's fair to say that something that looks weak in this vid probably hurts a lot in realy life haha. My sifu is in there so I know for sure as the smallest out of that group he absolutely packs a punch...
      For me part of the appeal of HSTL is the organisation, the camaraderie and to have a GM who is constantly adding new things and evolving the style (and lives an hour from me!). Obviously these things are very subjective depending on what you want in a martial art.
      Anyway, cheers for the considered comment! I just stumbled on this while checking out this video.. heh

I was given a wooden dummy from a Tong Long friend (because he broke all the arms off in one jong) who trained with Terry in the vid here... and Terry was exceptional back then.. holy shit.. I chose WC but CGTL is as pro as it gets.. Spar against a Tong long guy (if you can last that long) and you will see what i mean.. but like Wing Chun you have to pull the strikes as to not kill the opponent, so it doesnt look a devastating as it actually is.. but it is..

      Oh... so your explanation is that they'd move very fast and strike the wrestler coming in on the head? Its funny how we havent seen any wing chun fighter use that move in any fight against a wrestler right?
      While we are making stuff up, here is how I would take down a wing chun fighter:
      Id just run in behind him and choke him out. You know, you would think that wouldnt be possible..but if I just did it very fast then its a viable move!:D

      ***** You like every other bullshido fanboy cant talk about MMA without saying "its the MMA "SPORT" or "ITS NOT REAL WORLD" etc. But yet there is no proof at all. I am not hating on martial artists, there are people within every discipline that are very dedicated, well trained and capable. But to bullshit and imagine a stand-up boxing-style art has some kind of magical speed-move that protects them at grapplers is only bullshit, and nothing else. I trained TKD for several years, and I love the discipline, dedication and workout aspects of it. And its alot of fun! But never did I fool myself into believing that i could perform some 360 spin kick against a charging wrestler. The only complete martial artist is one that trains many disciplines, hence MMA. We have proof of that, but not of some magical art that surpasses all other arts (because it doesnt exist!).

    • @Monscent
      @Monscent Před 9 lety

      ***** I never said a legshot is impossible to defend. But the efficient way is not to somehow jump out of the way, that just doesnt work against a skilled wrestler (they are also very fast and they are not "diving off balance").
      TKD kicks are strong but absolutely not a good street defence. Thats also what I said.
      Its obvious youre one of those purists who really hate MMA (saying its "thuggish" and "men grappling eachother on the ground"). It is however, the proven best way of fighting, all in all. Also its the only place where we have actually been able to see purist martial artists test their style against wrestlers, grapplers, and people who mix several arts. The outcome is that we know that a mix of systems is better than one single system.

    How are you conditioning your body to be weapons? Hardening your shins or fingers through impact/micro fractures. How are you training to fight if you aren't physically and cognitively engaging a threat with the tools you're going to use? Paul Vunak is a great example of proper and purposeful training leads to the effective violent results necessary to survive. This is a question to all martial artists on here. I train for combat not sports, that means to kill. Weapons, eye gouging, biting off ears, etc. Go against someone who's psychologically determined and physically trained themselves to perform and tested themselves in real fights. No rules or expectations of letting them walk away. You don't understand real violence. Come at a person with your MMA who has a box cutter hidden and see how bad your day is. My respects to all martial arts.

    Problem is this, you get a burly muscly idiot throwing punches, and you need a lot of power to fight him off....something like Hung Gar or Shaolin (Xiao Hong form techniques) that blocks and hits like a freight train is needed..yes Mantis looks cool but there is not enough power here to stop a really strong opponent...I have studied Wing Chun and the close range chain punches have the similar problem, they are easily side stepped and wiped out but big haymaker punches....look at Choy Li Fut vs Wing Chun in the ring, and Choy Li Fut is powerful and gives very solid attacks without these more lighter slappy moves that Mantis has (no offence, as Mantis is very cool, just saying on the street you may need some serious power). However I am happy to be proven wrong! Peace to all!!
