the jam was fantastic and still is today.
It's a privilege to watch an interview with this brilliant man.
Admire his influences, writing & music. Mod for life!
When I make the effort and I walk down the street I feel untouchable, cloud walking above the World. There will always be an individualism about the culture. Especially as I have never really had Mod friends but the people around me whether punk, rocker, rasta or ted show me respect. I appreciate that. The culture is more highly regarded today among other groups of people than it probably has ever been. Shows in the influences on fashion in the High Street today.
Nick Drake's Riverman is one of the most beautiful things ever created.
It certainly is Lucien. I'm a fan.
i'm from Chicago seen the Jam in '82'
A gentleman. Love him.
He's as cool as fuck!
And still the same Southern accent - that will never go away!
GCS_MCMLXXI living in London i don't think it will
So are you.
few albums brings me so vivid memories as "Sound affects",1982,that war in the south atlantic,Thatcher there and the f...in' ,military junta .Open my mind when i heard when i was 17, and not understanding english at the time. This man and that band is a lighthouse in the dark
Love the sentiment, but quite a bit not adding up there??
The jam are the best band ever
Good interview...i liked it
The Jam...frozen in time as the perfect band.
It'd be REAL interesting to talk/chat with him about "things"... but near impossible. He's a legend, a treasure and (like it or not?) the most famous Face of the movement. I have met him; and he was both humble and polite; I cherish the fact that in the moments I had with him? I was able to thank him for the soundtrack, the style and the support I got from him and his songs. He IS a very cool cat.
😁I am jealous and I get it, so awesome when your hero turns out to be cool. I also loved that you said he is a cool cat, I named a photo of a siamese cat Paul Weller ( this picture just looked like him )...someday I hope to have a real one😉
Jealous is an understatement... My Ambition to meet Paul Weller and thank him for the music and all the concerts when I got so near. . Haters will say its sad. Who cares about the haters lols.... X
@MusicalElitist1 how so?
Some great questions.
i was a specials fan when i found the jam it was beat surrender. when i gave up on weller music was 2010 concert at warwick university, when i left early to go home to watch eastenders on skyplus
you couldnt go to clubs in those days and dance to the specials then the jam. no way.
When he says “uphill or downhill, it depends on the environment, really “ was he talking about the tooth stick??
Great choice of Nick Drake's Riverman. Shows his penchant for the introspective in songwriting.
Songwriting Genius
J'adore !!!
Without a doubt mate!
Yeah I always been into the mod culture it's who I am even tho I haven't got all the mod gear I'm still a mod
in the city theres a 1000 things i wanna say to you-p.weller/the jam
I remember picking up a copy of that Richard Barnes book Mods! and being blown away by the black and white photos of all the original early 60’s mods hanging out in soho . They looked so cool. I was never a mod but came across the mod revival kids that picked up the torch when the Jam came along. They looked cool too but they seemed like kids that loved the energy of the first wave of punk but couldn’t relate to the politics of it.
weller, king of the mods
The bass line to "A TOWN CALLED MALICE"
Anthony Monaghan But it's up to change...! As if we could:-(
Raw, honest and to the point.
Paul Weller for Prime Minister!
mod is not , that to us. mod means working class kids looking smart for the weekend' week days we are slaves for the the pound,But weekends we are the kings of glasgow
He almost smiled!
I didn’t know they played mars!!
Good call on nick drake! I'd also say a remark you made by weather report
Paul Weller, a tory punk, admits Ken Loach? You are one of us. Good. Paul, love you. I know just one guy that played the guitar like you. His name is Milan Mladenović. He was a guitar of Ekaterina Velika. Milan is not among us anymore.
Leader? :0)
Factual thing is that the Jam a mod revival act . The audiences were mostly punk rockers in 77-78
Hes an ordinary guy really, its just all the labels we as people keep putting on him make him into someone that he probably really isn't,but he is Paul Weller.
what is the mod culture the best definition?
engkausial A group of individuals who embrace good music and good clothes.
Fashion, music and a certain style. Style is the most important.
@@Sxm_8 And also an attitude to go with it:-)
@@Gazolba And also an attitude to go with it:-)
Riverman yes mate what a choice, and ken Loach or Mike Leigh ? Yes got it bang on Bruv, then there is your own Tunes what a Legend
oi oi mate
The culture is always there because teenagers will always have a tendency toward rebellion and arrogance.
Yeah true, but Jam fans didn't go around knifing and shooting each other?
But there is more to being mod than that.

Paul, you're wrong about Mike Leigh.
SoulStylistJukeBox Yeah he is wrong about Mike Leigh, but he's right that Ken Loach is better
Paul Weller should b made a MBE. The Jam r my 2nd favourite pop group 2nd only 2the Human League. Paul Weller That's Entertainment and The Butterfly collector r fab. Paul Weller if you were to do a duet with the 2Human League girls ie Susan Sulley and Joanne Catherall and me doing my drum kit inpression on the track. That would b so cool. He's just Paul Weller to me now,I guess when I was a teenager,he was kind of everything to me,but I'm 50 plus now,and the world looks a very different place these days,if that makes sense🤔
john marlon scott same here bud ... I was 18 n saw them when they headlined at the Loch Lomond bear festival circa 1980 ...they were awesome but this smacks of a guy selling out to the beliefs that he was selling at the time .....make loads of dosh n then change ur landscape n look after yourself ....isn't that what the politicians do ....n the very people he targeted ,,,,,,, say no more
The world hasn’t changed a bit.

left us short, the jam was going strong, it's not like they was going back in time, they had years left, Paul left all the fans short changed, but end of the day, best group at the time.
riverman nick drake, good choice
OMG ! Sorry I can't take the Weller brown nosing any more. He would be nothing without Rick and Bruce. THEY were magic together. THEY where the best band of their time and still remain one of the bast bands of all time. It really was about the three of them not one person.
mods and rockers ware the late 50s and early 60s and on
God!
💤 Doing old dad muzak for the last 12 years
You absolutely did not stop at the right time. C'mon, Paul, at least be honest. You wanted to go your own way, which is absolutely fine -- although I don't think you've done anything anywhere near the phenomenal stuff done with the Jam, be it Style Council or your solo stuff. The Jam, only my opinion, was destined for stardom, would have become huge. I know I sound like a disgruntled fan. However, I do genuinely believe it was a terrible decision to end the Jam.
I think the only thing that changed about wellers face,is his eye's,and voice probably.
Think he's trying to quit smoking in this interview. The way he keeps biting that stick.
blutojohn88 I just said that EXACT same thing!! Unfortunately, it didn't work...
Anne Mikusinski bla , bla , bla !
Do u enjoy being rude to people you don't know?
Ha!
He's gagging for a gasper...
I understand The Jam had run its course, but why didnt Weller keep the other two on, recruit others and change name/direction?!
Probably because he had spent 9 years with them; wanted to change direction; wanted to work with different musicians; wanted to try new styles of music; felt they wouldn't be able to move to these styles; wanted a clean break; wanted to move on etc.
Because he wanted to produce the worst shit music ever. And he did.
Paco riviera is an alias
My word, you're a cretin.
C'est un chic type Paul Weller
I never understood the revival era mod mindset. When the whole ethos of the original mods was looking forward yet the revival era mods did nothing but look back…🤷🏻♂️
Paul is wrong about Mike leigh. For further discourse, just ask.
Modfather
Don't like Mike Leigh???
Life is Sweet?? Naked????
Oh, Paul!
That's a big toofpick
He looks really like an old man now. Pity he used to look so cool
+Clint English I think he still looks cool. The smoking did that to his face more than age, I hope he never suffers from a smoking related illness.
Still looks cooler than you, moron.
I am a big fan but I am an original 1977 pUnK ! The JAM and Paul Weller, may claim to be 'Mod' 'Jazz' etc, but without the revolution that was 'pUnK rOcK' HE/THEY would never have had a career! FACT! dx
Just watched the Sky programs on 40th anniversary of Quadrophenia! Talk about navel gazing! The 'Mods' only lasted a couple of years, replaced by the skinheads and hippies! Revived late 70's for a couple of years. Like punk it was overrated other than amazing bands like the Faces etc.
This was a few years ago and he looks 150
It is the destiny of all white British men to bald and melt into a shapeless mass. That said, Paul is looking well. Definitely takes after his mum.
Still looks better than you.
@@MuscleDad420 As Secret Affair said looking goods the answer;-)
2:05 have you been to the departure lounge at Stansted airport Paul ? - trust me there's nothing special about the British dress sense !
"Shit records"? Come on
Télérama et la mod culture.... Lol.
Would be better if he buried his ego and phoned Bruce and Rick and got the band back together for the fans that have lived their lives loving the amazing sounds that The Jam were.
Davidos Red Bruce foxton played songs at a gig with him
Nothing to do with ego mate, why is it expected that bands reform? I was a fan then, still a fan now, but he felt it was the time to stop so he did. Quite why he's still fielding this question is beyond me! Loads of bands reform suspiciously (Dosh!) whereas after considerable time Bruce played on Wake Up The Nation and a bit 'live' A nice boost for fans, but no cheap cash-in.
@@OldMod67 Weller didnt use The Jam as a meal ticket
Weller is utterly deluded, as thousands are, when they think being a Mod is about individualism. It's not. I was a Mod. I regret it. Not for the education I received in music, but for the myth I believed in that I was different. I wasn't. I was like a 100,000 other spotty herberts wearing parkas and tin badges. That's being one of the sheep. Thank my Atheist Lord I realised that I should just do my own thing and not call myself anything or dress as a Carnaby-boy. Weller could have done himself a world more credibility if he had just dumped the 60s posing and Modfathering and gone image-free, a-la, Talk Talk. Absolutely, Weller produced 3 of the finest records ever in "All Mod Cons", "Setting Sons" and "Sound Affects" but the wannabe-Ray Davies/Moddy Boy image always took the shine off him for me. Oh, well.
You forgot Heavy Soul and Stanley Road.
It wasn't shit paul !
..could do without watching him pick food outta his teeth...
MBarber28 he used to be compulsive smoker at interviews. I guess this time round he wasn’t allowed to, so he picked a stick instead. When it’s down to watching an interview, it is about discovering the character you’ve got before you, like it or not
@@jlmagoya exactly , I can respect the comment, but I understand, the ex smoker, e5c but also I admit bias as a WELLERIAN person!;)
:) but otherwise love the interview
I liked the tooth picking. Firstly because it ticked some naff 'beat' or 'jazz' box (I've no idea why) and secondly because not a morsel of food appeared. I 'suppose I just like the fact that geniuses have nervous ticks like the rest of us.
Give over.
Celebrity is so dull, Weller's almost barbaric meaninglessness is painful to listen to.
Then don't listen. Moreover, you're too stupid to understand and you wish you were as cool as Weller.
Paul Weller wanted to leave The Jam long before he did...If Danny Baker was a better journalist it would have happened and maybe The Style Council wouldnt have happened. Personally i find Weller up his own arse with a complete contempt for anyone he has ever known or worked with.
old man fighting old age
As you will too...if lucky
Still accomplished more than you ever will.
was he a mod with the style council
i think not
He was hahaha
Steve Mcniel He’s always been a Mod
Good music, shit politics.
Hereward the Wake Shite politics?! Starnge that Weller is still of the Left, living working in the U.K & still paying taxes...!
he broke up the jam so he could do other things that he couldn't do with the jam, he's done them things now so it would be nice if he got the jam back together for the fans who supported him through his other musical endeavours, style council, solo projects and joint ventures, but they all want the jam while its still possible,
The Jam And Secret Affair Aren’t Real mods!!
The Who And The Faces Are The Only Real Mods!!
The Small Faces yes, (and the Yardbirds), but Pete Townshend has acknowledged that the Who borrowed from the Mods (via Pete Meadon) and weren't really mods in the truest sense.
Who's saying their 'Real Mods'? Weller isn't. What are you talking about? Havant 'Skrewdriver' Boys? Jesus Christ... bet you're lovely... From the mean streets of Havant.
Much as I like Wellers music he's got to be the most boring bloke on earth.
If you had said James McCartney, I would've agreed.
Boring bloke on earth .? You don't know him obviously
He speaks very highly of you though..

What a load of rambling drivel he talks. And can someone have a word with him about that Dr. Spock hair over the ears look he's been sporting since 1896.
Love The Jam, me.
listen the jam were a great band they split at the right time and left a great legacy Weller can't sing jam songs like he once did it ain't the same now they're all in their sixties let's leave it at that and just keep listening to their great tunes
@@mickmcgowan7756 What does that have to do with anything? I simply - and correctly - stated that Weller is a boring old git.
