  • Touchmark tools are used by blacksmiths to stamp a maker's mark into forged tools like knives, as well as tongs, and woodworking tools like plane blades, chisels, etc. In this video, bladesmith Walter Sorrells demonstrates the making of a touch mark punch using a CNC machine.

“I like doing things in the forge because….fire”. I can so relate! 😂

The narrow angles of that W must be one of the hardest letters to cut well with rotating tools like an end mill. Very interesting seeing how well it came out.

I couldn't tell if you were using an air-blast or MQL while cutting, but either would have helped a lot. When I cut small stuff like that, sometimes I'll submerge it in Tap Magic. I do a bit of hardened stuff too. I use regular carbide, but all of our carbide is coated in AlTiN, TiNAl, or AlCrN for cutting most steels. With stainless we use TiCN sometimes. I just use feeds and speeds as if I were using HSS tools. For those tiny EMs you may want to get the metal removal rate from the tool manufacturer. You don't want to go so slow that you burn out the tool. It depends on your machine too. I found that high speed machining works surprisingly well on tiny stuff which the metal removal rate will help with. Lean on your machinist friends when you get out of comfort zone. If I were to write down everything that I've tried on this stuff, I'd be at it for a couple hours.

Walter, thanks for the video! I've been trying unsuccessfully to make a touchmark that has two levels - I want my initials inside a circle. Is that a "thing"?

And for those of us who don't have a few thousand bucks to spend on CNC machines?

It's time to break out the brain control manual CNC machine, you know, the Dremel

    What about the lazer

    • @joesikkspac7904

You can't cut like that with a laser. You can etch, but when you get small the heat transfer starts to mush everything up and it won't remove enough material. An EDM is capable of doing the job, but not many shops have them, let alone people.

@@joesikkspac7904 no I meant use the Lazer to etch the maker mark on the knife/product

@ThatOneOddguy yeah, you could. You could etch a fancy design on it even. It wouldn't be as permanent. Probably about .020"(.5mm) deep. I think that he was going for a more old-school marking though.

With carbide I was told that the smaller the bit the faster your rotation speed should be.

Would you be interested in making a touch mark for a beginner? I don't have a CNC. How much would you charge me. My initials are D.M.

Walter Sorel is a good guy. But I doubt he would take on a project for somebody he doesn't know. I mean customer yes, but there are people that do that for a living out there, for a reasonable price. Walter is making content as a job, just like all of his other jobs. It doesn't hurt to ask, but I see it a lot watching these videos and people comment how much would it take to make me one? no-one, ever takes them up on it though.

Because my interest is the knifemaking end of this and not buying a cnc so I can make a touch mark, my question is : if I sent a very simple design, what would it cost to have one made. If its cost prohibitive (for me) , I'll just use the letter punches I already own.
