    I have one of these watches from my grandfather who recently passed away. I guess I should have it serviced since it probably hasn't been done in 50 years.

    Just curious how many pocket watches do you own and what made you get into them? I don't own any but really enjoy the detail you go into on your videos and you can tell this is a hobby that you truly do love. Thanks for sharing with everyone.

      I have one to many and it is a bad habit I picked up a little over ten years ago. I justify it by saying it keeps me off the street at night.

    What distinguishes a bunn special watch from a standard one?

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  Před 8 lety +1

      I think the special has 21 or more jewels while the standard one has 17 or 19.

      There is a book on pocket watches that lists the companies and the watches they made, mostly American. I show this book in a video I did on the books I use. This book you should have if you are going to buy pocket watches. Look up Cooksey on ebay for the book. It is a price guide that they issue every year.

    Hi Bunn, You said something in the video about the balances which caught my ear. My understanding about split balances is that they are part of a temperature compensation feature. The balance wheels are of bi-metal construction, like the bi-metal coil in a thermometer. As the temperature changed, the circumference of the balance wheel would change too which would increase or decrease the frequency of the escapement to offset the tendency of a movement to run slow when cold and fast when hot. Am I wrong about this? As always, thanks for keeping us entertained with your videos.

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  Před 8 lety

      You pretty much have an understanding of it. What I would change is that the effective diameter of the balance changes and that the watch would run fast when cold and slow when hot. This is due to the hairspring properties changing with the temperature. On the compensated balance the free ends of the rim would move inward when hot and outward when cold. This movement would compensate for the hairspring. The reason for the solid balance on this watch is that the hairspring is made out of a material whose properties don't change due to temperature like a steel hairspring would. For the specs this watch had to meet this worked.

    • @bunnspecial

      Yes. You could choose a from a selection of faces or what is called a dial.

    • @bunnspecial

      The first 992B I bought was the one with the last style text. Bought it at the flea market for under 100 USD because the crown was missing, the stem was broken and the screw for the lever set was missing. Other than that it worked.

      The common ones are Hamilton 940, Illinois Bunn Special, Elgin B. W. Raymond, Waltham Vanguard and Cresent St. For others look at book. That is what I did.

    • @Michael.Chapman
      @Michael.Chapman Před 4 měsíci

      The 18s sized watches all tend to be early. After the second Railroad Grade ‘standard’ was defined (around 1930) the 16s size became the norm. Nearly all my pre 1930 watches are 18s. My most supreme is a Hamilton 940 from 1914 with incredibly rich, beautifully decorated movement and magnificent dial.
