Lords of Depravity DVD is the most detailed documentary about history of some metal band. in that particular DVD it is clear why Sodom moved to more punkier sound and goofier lyrics. not my favorite Sodom era but Get what you deserve is one of the filthiest punk crossover records to date. just listen to song Gomorrah, it is basically 2 accords song but song is furious and evil as fuck. Tom is one of very few pure metal maniacs out there.

Your friend from Midnight is correct. There are some rough patches in their discography but there is nothing not worth checking out. The newest album Genesis XIX riffs off all the music they've had a hand in influencing and steals it back. Like you it took me forever to check out anything past Persecution Mania but now that I have I'm glad I did. There are two versions of Obsessed By Cruelty, my favorite nostalgia album. I grew up with the Metal Blade version but there is a really good Steamhammer version as well. Nothing sounds scarier than that old Metal Blade version though
