Its silence was enough for me.
The horrors of a battle in a war, 106 years ago. Carry a silent echo.

I got to go with my grandfather in 2005 to tour places he served during WW2, we were with a group on bus tours, we went to many WW1 monuments and battlefields, I remember when going to them there was life and noises, as you got closer it there was no form of life and silence, not even the sounds of birds. Very eerie!

That was very good! It brings a size perspective better than the old B&Ws that everything blends into the sky.

I don't know how to add commentary and the images were from a silent drone. The British front line was some 100 yards beyond the monument, Sunken Lane was right in the middle no-man's land with the German front lie to the right as you look up the lane. In the distance, the low rolling landscape was Redan Ridge.

Nice video. A little dialogue would have made it better.

Steve, a little dialogue would potentially have made it comprehensible to people who have little knowledge of the Battle of the Somme.

For it to all start again a couple of decades later. An absolutely appalling and senseless slaughter of so many young men. For what, indeed.

to stop millions of invading Germans trying to take France. For some reason it's easy for people to say for what 100 years later, I'm sure people will say the same about events in Ukraine today, why bother fighting or even trying just let the invader have their way.

@@keepcalm5026 I was talking about the last wars in general. Reason for Ukraine is not Putin alone. It is the common Russian imperial thinkling based in the 19th century. There are even morw rigid politians in Russia (like Medwedjew, Kadyrow and Werschinski) claiming that whole Europe is there sphere of interest. And NATO in person of Stoltenberg is guilty too, by threatening the paranoid Russian. And all the bankers and weapon makers and their shareholders earn money.

The entire British Sector of the Western Front, about 20 miles, is like this. Inferior positions, often overlooked, vast space. Incredibly difficult combat, as proven.
