just so you know, I've heard that they change yasuke's story to fit in with the narrative that they're trying to create in ac, but hopefully it's just as enticing to play as that was to watch
They absolutely do, but that is the whole point of choosing Yasuke, to be fair. Not only is he marketable as a famous and iconic character in a lot of media of the era, but he is also not historically important enough to be tied down by any historic "duties" or events.
The reality is that Yasuke, while a real and documented person that japanese historians agree existed and fought as a samurai for Oda Nobunaga, he was not legendary. He was not some great hero. There are like a dozen references or mentions of him through out several historic documents and that is it. Besides his appearance and position in Nobunaga's court, 99% about Yasuke is rhetorical and supposition.
Which makes him perfect for the role, as he they can have as much creative freedom for his plot as they want. The only real things of note is that he lived there during the Sengoku Jidai, fought for Nobunada and was defeated while defending Nobunaga's son after the betrayal of Nobunaga's general Mitsuhide, who then spared Yasuke's life and sent him to live with jesuit monks in the south of japan.
There was just not much documentation on Yasuke's real life story, so I doubt anyone will be too made about any changes that are made besides the core fundamentals.
they’ve done it so many times in the whole ac series and it hits every time this’ll be good as well
I mean Yasuke's true story, what little we know of it, is pretty depressing. He was basically paraded like a pet as part of Nobunaga's retinue instead of actually being a warrior, at least that's based on one historical account. I like what they are doing with his story though. With how little is actually known about his life, he's the perfect candidate for some cool historical fiction/ fantasy.
@@Skylander404That account was likely tinted with its own agenda. The reality is that Yasuke had a position of a vassal warrior that was consided one of relative trust, even if not a great or prestigious one, especially for an outsider, and when Nobunaga died he actually fought to defend Nobunaga's son, which led to him becoming captive of the traitor Mitsuhide, who banished him to the jesuit temples south of japan to live the rest of his days with the other foreigners.
But yeah, it is impossible to truly know his story at this point with the few mentions there are of him due to his exotic nature in Nobunaga's court.
He is actually mentioned in:
-Letter of Luis Frois (Likely the one with the harsh account you mentioned)
-Shinchōkōki (History of Nobunaga)
-Letter from Lorenzo Mezia (An account far more positive that mentioned how much respect Yasuke had earned in court)
- Matsudaira Ietada's diary (Which mentions Ietada's surprise at Yasuke's skin color, a mention of his name and a mention of Nobunaga paying Yasuke a stipend)
- A second letter from Luis Frois (Yet again, a rather harsh account but he also mentions how Yasuke fought for Nobunaga and also fought for Nobunaga's son after the Lord died)
@@naosou921from historical documents online he was never a samurai though. Lets be honest its the era were slaves were a thing they showed black powder rifles in the cgi trailers America was on its way not yet but still. There is not a lot we know about Yasuke. He’s more or less a footnote in history who came from somewhere in Africa, may or may not have been a slave, became a retainer of nobunaga with all of the perks that entailed, may or may not have been a samurai, and then disappeared after the death of Nobunaga and nobunaga’s son. If Yasuke wasn’t black we probably wouldn’t have heard about him at all. He stood out in central Japan at the time because of his skin color and his height (he towered over the average Japanese person at the time.
If you want to know more I would suggest looking up Metatron’s video on the subject.
Cory getting revived from the dead for one sponsored video and he’s leaving again
"You ask about Yasuke, who is known to have worked as a retainer of Nobunaga Oda during the Sengoku period in Japan.
The only thing we know about him is that he was probably from the area around present-day Mozambique, and that the Jesuits brought him to Japan from India.
He worked as a missionary escort in Japan, but it is not known in what capacity. There is no conclusive testimony, as he was said to have been a slave or to have been of a certain rank.
Missionaries used many blacks as slaves, but rarely brought them to Kyoto. Since it was very rare to see a dark-skinned person in Kyoto, many people gathered to see him, which is said to have caused some trouble. However, it seems that this did not happen with him, but among the onlookers.
Nobunaga Oda was one of those who took an interest in him. Initially, Nobunaga suspected that his black color was a trick, so he had him wash himself and became more and more interested in him as he learned that it was not artificially colored.
Eventually, he was hired by Nobunaga to be his retainer. According to some accounts, he was not a slave but a true retainer, which would suggest that Nobunaga at least considered him one of his regular retainers.
However, he was a retainer of Nobunaga for approximately one year. In June 1582, a year and two months after he became the talk of Kyoto, Oda Nobunaga was ambushed and killed at Honnoji Temple.
At this time he is captured by his attacker, Mitsuhide Akechi, who orders that he not be killed but turned over to Christian missionaries because he is an animal, and he is transferred to one of the churches that were being built at the time.
It is not clear whether Mitsuhide really thought he was an animal or whether he lied to get him off scot-free, and the truth of these words remains a mystery.
And since going to church, Yasuke's whereabouts have been completely unknown.
Taken together, Yasuke is almost certainly real, but he is a great enigma. We do not know what language he could speak, nor do we know what Oda Nobunaga's other retainers thought of him. This kind of existence is perfect for describing the imagination that historical fiction likes to have about him.
And perhaps you are one of them. In any case, he is a great enigma."

The guy is likely sourcing a romanticized version of history from a popular book. Not much is even known about Yasuke and many of the things he said aren't even recorded or things you can easily assume. He is, however, depicted as a samurai or just a warrior in fictional media even if it's unclear whether he was one or not irl.
He received stipend. At the time only samurai received stipend, literally cannot be any clearer
@@Cy4nMod Except that it could be more clear if it were explicitly mentioned.
Also, it's stupid to say it's settled just because he received a stipend.
What you're referring to is how the specific term is used in comparison to other records, because just a straight up "stipend" can be given to anyone.
But that's still a contentious point being argued by historians.
The historians with the least or no amount of skin in the game just put it up in the air rather than assume anything.
Not to mention that all of Nobunaga's companions had either been given stipends or had them increased.
I know a lot of people wanna just up and say he's a Samurai because the word sounds cool, but it genuinely does not matter, because even if he didn't have the title, he still had a lot of if not all of the shit the samurai were granted.

Here is a true question, How many characters in Assassin's Creed (AC 1 through AC Valhalla) were playable and if any of them were true historical people from the past? The ANSWER is very simple, 15 Playable Fictional Characters and “NONE” of them were true historical people of the past!
All the "playable" characters in AC 1 through AC Valhalla were all fictional characters, Yasuke was a real historical person who was nothing more than a retainer, not a samurai.
Yasuke IS A REAL HISTORICAL BLACK MAN WHO WAS NOTHING BUT A RETAINER FOR Oda Nobunaga! "Real Historical Person," Yasuke was and is but a "Retainer." The other Assassin's Creed characters from Assassin's Creed 1 through Assassin's Creed Valhalla are "Fictional," characters that DO NOT EXIST IN ACTUAL HISTORY. Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad (Fictional Character), Ezio Auditore da Firenze (Fictional Character), Captain Edward James Kenway (Fictional Character), Adéwalé (Fictional Character), Aveline de Grandpré (Fictional Character), Bayek of Siwa (Fictional Character), Alexios and Kassandra (Fictional Characters), Basim Ibn Ishaq (Fictional Character), and others that are not based in our past historical history. That is why I always stated to other people that 80% is Fact because of True History for Assassin's Creed Video Games, then there is the 20% Fiction that has "People", Places, Items, and other things that are in the game, are not in our past history. Yasuke "IS A TRUE HISTORICAL PERSON IN JAPAN," NOT A FICTIONAL CHARACTER, you can say, "fantasy," all you want but we all know that Yasuke is a real black man who was a retainer, not trained to use the katana, he cleaned Nobunaga's Katana's and other weapons that is what a retainer does. Sorry to say in true historical words and more true blunt historical words Yasuke was a retainer meaning he was a servant to Oda Nobunaga. Not my words but in actual dictionary definitions, Retainer is a person attached or owing service to a household especially a: SERVANT or b: EMPLOYEE.
There’s discrepancies in Japanese history about Yasuke and we don’t know he was a retainer or a samurai that was trained. There is basically no actual documentation except for a few stories, but stories can change over time because of different perspectives, different things happening different mindset. Just like for example, that if you say something from a long time ago by word-of-mouth, then someone says it in a different word or words than that word-of-mouth or whatever you said can be different. And we cannot forget about WWII that many things could’ve been lost because of the war, and we may never know from certain items to certain documentations were burnt or been completely annihilated because of the two bombs, but we don’t know. I’m not saying that this can be a true story or not but all we know that he was nothing more than a retainer and that is it. I am sorry to say, but until there is actual more evidence like where is Yasuke Katana sword? Where is it? Does anyone know? Because if you have that sword and it has his name on it and approves that he was a samurai, but in the end, no sword, no proof that he was a samurai.
Both Greed and WOKE is the message and agenda on both UBISOFT and Sweet Baby Inc. and Black Gamer Girls, and DEI Money. There is no story or the Hero's Journey in this game. Assassin's Creed is just now a "Shadow Shell," of itself and an empty husk. You know if only the Baka writer read Japanese History a lot closer than instead of 2 characters to play, there could be only 1 character to play. There was an opportunity they could have used instead of a fictional black samurai character and in real history he was a retainer not a samurai. If only they read Japanese history carefully and throughly they could have made the only one Japanese Female Assassin Character. Combined both true history and fiction, Japanese women at the time did learn to use a particular weapon called, "Naginata," a Polearm weapon with a curved blade at the top. While the katana sword tends to be associated with male samurai of Japan, a distinctive weapon called the naginata has been traditionally associated with women and female fighters known as onna-bugeisha. This could have been the base of a Japanese Assassin's Creed Story, with a Japanese Woman who learned to use the Naginata and eventually learns the way of the Assassin's Brotherhood.
Do you know why they don’t want to make a game based in Africa, especially in Assassin’s Creed well because in actual history, many of the warring tribes enslaved their own kind. In about 90% or even 80% of the black population of today, don’t want to admit that their own kind in Africa, their own ancestors in Africa enslaved their own kind. This is why they don’t want to make any Assassin’s Creed games based in Africa. I know they already did Egypt, but I am talking other African countries or places in Africa other than Egypt like South Africa, Algeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and the other 48 African countries.

@@ShadowAnimeInk There literally isn't any evidence documenting his rank in any document hes mentioned in.
Also, koshō is NOT a term for the "highest ranking attendant// bodyguard", they're the Japanese equivalent of something like a page for a European knight. Now, his position might sound like something along the lines of koshō; however, key information you missed was that the guy in some documents he was referenced in, mention him almost like a trophy or pet. This doesn't mean that Nobunaga necessarily treated him like that, but could explain why he was always around.
Yasuke was at most a low-ranking retainer which is still pretty good. Theres no evidence that he owned any serious estates but he was part of Nobunaga's court and even fought alongside him. Aside from him being black in feudal Japan, most evidence points to the fact that the guy lived a super typical life for the time period. "He was just a Retainer!!!!!" He was in the field catching bodies and was having dinner with the head hancho on the regular.
So did 99% of samurai at the time and yet they choose the black guy that wasn't an official samurai as one of the main characters sounds like a bunch of esg sweet baby in bullshit.

@@wkkqewqaver7766 99% of Samurai were having dinners with the head hancho on the regular? Doubt it. And it really shouldn't matter whether or not his title was "official". He dawned armor and saw combat more than once. I don't get what's so difficult about seeing the appeal in wanting to make a character like Yasuke have a place in the AC story.
@@kareemdavis4068 because the intention of his placement in this game is not pure it's corrupted by modern politics, they could've done a 1000 ac games in Africa starring black people or America but they choose Japan.
What’s funny is retainers were a class in the samurai hierarchy so they’re literally just admitting that he was in fact a samurai. Thats how you know people are just regurgitating other people’s bullshit based on nothing and now it’s getting worse with people saying he was just a pet.

Yasuke as an anime wasnt ass it just didnt live up to the expectations and since there was a story to tell Yasuke only took the role of an instrument of the story and we didnt get introspection from him or his thoughts just a bit of a silent MC that happened to be Yasuke, so it wasnt the story of Yasuke it was a story WITH Yasuke. It would be just a bit disappointing if it was a story said to include Yasuke but the anime was CALLED Yasuke and saw very little about his story
Facts
That was because he didnt do much. Yes he was a slave brought into Japan by the Christians. But the most that he did was become Oda Nobunaga's weapons bearer. Almost everything that this guy said was purely made up. Even his depictions of Yasuke being a swole beef cake was BS. He was a tall and lanky dude.
And the show cant make up stories about him doing big things because that would offend the Japanese by manufacturing history.
It was ass
@@sosamma090 ehh not really. You are far off. Weapon bearers dont fight in battles. Yasuke did.
Here are all the written accounts of Yasuke I can find. Bare with me because all of them I'm translating from Japanese:
Chronicles of Lord Nobunaga (*Shinchōkōki*):
>2nd Month 23rd Day [March 27, 1581]. A black monk came from the Christian countries. He looks about 26-7 of age and his entire body black as a cow. He's body is really well-built, and furthermore has the strength of over ten men. The padre brought him here to see Lord Nobunaga.
I'm really grateful to be able to see such rare things among the three countries that's never been seen before, and in such detail, all thanks to Lord Nobunaga's great influence.
*Wiki's translation use "page" but it's probably wrong. In this case Ōta Gyūichi probably mean shaved/hairless.
Letter from Luis Frois, April 14, 1581:
>The Monday after Easter, Nobunaga was in the capital, but a great number of people gathered in front of our casa to see the cafre [black slave], creating such a ruckus that people were hurt and almost died from thrown rocks. Even though we had lots of guards at the gates, it was difficult holding people back from breaking it down. They all say if we showed for money, one would easily earn in a short time 8,000 to 10,000 cruzado. Nobunaga also wanted to see him, and so sent for him, so Padre Organtino brought him. With great fuss, he couldn't believe this was the natural colour and not by human means, so ordered him to take off all his clothes above his belt. Nobunaga's sons also called him over, and everyone was very happy. Nobunaga's nephew the current commander of Ōsaka also saw this and was so happy he gave him 10,000 coins.
Letter from Lorenzo Mesia, October 8, 1581:
>The padre brought one cafre with him, and no one in the capital has seen him before, and they all admired him, and countless people came to see him. Nobunaga himself saw him and was surprised, and thought it was painted with ink and did not believe he was black from birth. He saw him from time to time, and he knew some Japanese, so he never got tired of talking to him, and he was strong and knew some tricks so Nobunaga was very happy. Now he's his strong patron, and to let everyone know he has someone show go with him around the city. The people say Nobunaga would make him a tono*.
*Japanese word for lord or sir.
Matsudaira Ietada's Diary, Tenshō 10, fourth month:
>Nineteenth [May 11, 1582], day of Teibi. Raining. His highness gave him a stipend. They say deus [the Jesuits] presented him. He had the black man with him. His body was black like ink, 6.2 feet tall. They say his name's Yasuke.
Luis Frois' report to Jesuit Society, November 5, 1582:
>And the cafre the Visitador Alessandro Valignano gave to Nobunaga on his request, after his death went to the mansion of his heir and fought there for a long time, but when one of Akechi's vassals got close and asked him give up his sword, he handed it over. The vassals went and asked Akechi what to do with the cafre, he said the cafre is like an animal and knows nothing, and he's not Japanese so don't kill him and give him to the church of the Indian padre. With this we were a bit relieved.
One other textual reference to Africans in Japan exist. In Luis Frois' *History of Japan* he recorded another cafre and one from Malabar (India) working the two cannons on Arima clan's ship, with one loading and one igniting.
Otherwise there are pictorial evidence of Africans in Japan.
This is a painting of one in a sumo match who may or may not be Yasuke.
A couple of paintings here and here suggest that unlike central Japan, Africans as slaves seems not that rare in the trading ports, probably Hirado or Nagasaki.
