In this video, I continue to disassembly the twin-turbo V12 engine from my CL65 AMG so we can start cleanings. I show you 2 at-home DIY methods of cleaning engine parts safely and then we take the parts to Fluid MotorUnion. They have a big machine I call the "vaporizer" and it makes parts look brand new. I also bought a really cool tumbler that makes cleaning bolts fun. Enjoy!

be happy that you still have a wife 😆
Dude, you start and finish more projects while having a full time job than almost all the full time youtubers (who even have 2 channels and never finish anything 🙄). Absolutely awesome 👏
Yeah man, he doesn't screw around. He's a rare example for sure.
Definitely the most legit part time CZcamsr
He only does one project at a time.

Thank God I'm not the only one that yells at my engines when they're being bold.
Yup, you're not the only ones, I scold mine too.
I've been looking for a new car to replace my daily Volvo, and the Volvo is not having any of it and breaking down even more now. What a brat.
@@Vaino_Hotti haha. I just sold a Volvo V70 turbo. She didn't like it. Had the MAF sensor go out in my driveway while the guy was looking at it. She was angry with me.
I cant say i've ever yelled at my engines , just a slight tut, tell them am disappointed and gently remind them of how replaceable they are.
Alex is the type of guy to have arguments with his cars about each other
18:30 problem with using a wire wheel is you remove dirt and rust, but also zinc. I've made this mistake before and had a motorbike covered in rusty screws, which is way worse than dirty screws.
I think they make some sort of black oxide or black something dip or chemical stuff. Makes the bolts have a nice black look to them and appearantly some protection. The wire wheel is simple and in a bunch of cases if its not cosmetic, pretty good
Absolutely correct. Just posted the same thing cuz I didn't see your comment.
Agree 100% yes, the wire wheel removes the plating. The tumbler looks like the best way to go.
Hot ultrasonic cleaner would be better for the threads on the bolts. In a tumbler the bolts just bounce around on the inside & get beat up. Also, Alex I can't believe you're just getting into vapor blasting. Vintage motorcycle restorers have been using it with great results for decades. It's pretty amazing and nothing else comes close when you really want to clean a part to like new condition.
Was looking forward to this video since I woke up

Alex as a fellow Chicagoan your videos are some of my favorite on CZcams!!!
Thanks
I'm still trying to imagine having the mechanical confidence to rip a Mercedes V12. I wonder if you ever any "holy shit what have I gotten myself into moments" when you look at all the parts everywhere. Hats off to you man, this is great content 👍🏻
Vapor honing is so satisfying to watch!
For cleaning bolts, nuts and other smaller parts, have you considered an ultrasonic cleaner? I use a smaller one at work for carbs and other small components and, using Simple Green Extreme cleaner, it does an amazing job with next to no residue from the cleaning solution.
Yeah, I would use that before a tumbler, but the tumbler is probably way cheaper.
Can also have smaller baskets separate all the different sets of bolts. The tumbler is cheaper though so someone doing small batches might not see the return. Can also look into tumble media if doing some polishing.
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH You can get an ultrasonic cleaner for less than $50
Simple Green. Elliott Alvis has entered the chat.
I have both and the tumbler with pins will make it look better than new, and the ultrasonic will clean it but could still look dull and not clean although it is.
You should look into Renting a Dry Ice Machine to get the Engine compartment area clean like Factory
Alex great video as usual. Couple suggestions based on experience. I use a similar tumbler. I put a little bit of beach/construction sand in the solution, it helps cut grease and old loctite from the threads. Additionally, even though the parts washer says no flame, I use diesel because of the low flash point and also any water based solutions I used in the past destroyed the pump if it sat for more than a week. I just keep the diesel fresh...change it once every six months to keep it from absorbing other chemicals and raising the flash point and it works like a champ. Been using the same washer from Harbor Freight now for six years after going through three pumps initially with water based crap. Again, outstanding channel. Your the reason I own an 05 CDI. Best car I have ever owned and I'm an old fart.
I just love that little wiper blade in that cleaning machine! And of course love the cleaning machine too!
Cool Tumbler ~ Could experiment by adding various 'media' to the drum in addition to any liquid.
See my post about using lemishine....
I think the fact that you dropped Tasos name says a lot about you and who you are … “Awesome Alex” The legendary Double A.
You brought that V12 beauty back into all of our Mercedes lovers life in a way. You Broke her down and built her back to her natural beauty. That’s passion, thank you Double A!!!
Vapor honing just works so well. It's very impressive.
I definitely watch the whole video, to many gems and an extreme amount of AMG love 🤙🏿
The tractor supply solvent is great! It’s light on smell and cleans very well. It’s about $45 for 5 gallons. It’s totally worth it. I have an Eastwood parts washer similar to yours and the pump works great with the solvent
You need to try dry ice blasting to clean engine parts, come up like new.
As a reloader I use a tumbler to, to clean even better you can use stainless steel pins working together with the water and cleaning fluid.
"If I had one of this at home, my family would never see me"...... that would be me 😆.
Enjoyed the update l. Keep up the great work 👍
Something I recently discovered myself for cleaning engine bays and undercarriage is dry ice cleaning/blasting. Haven’t tried it myself but supposedly it’s really gentle and makes parts look brand new.
The vapor blasters are common in the motorcycle industry to restore parts. Dry ice does a real good job, too.
Man, what a transformation! This car is going to be epic.
Talking to my tools and parts definitely helps. Mostly it helps me, but it DOES HELP! Thanks for another interesting, informative and entertaining video!
I want that vapor honing machine ! thanks for discovering it Alex
Vapor blasting was an absolute game changer for my motorcycle restorations. I have a smaller version of this and man, I absolutely LOVE this thing.
Love that little windshield wiper in the blast cabinet
My daily is a 05 e55, youve helped me fix it 3 times so far, thanks for the great videos 😂
I really enjoyed this video! That tumbler was genius. But the VAPORIZER is definitely the winner today for cleaner engine parts. That looked brand new! 13:16
My daily driver is a 2002 S430 with 179,000 miles. Bought it for $3,000 4 years ago. Runs like a top. My project, thanks to you, is my 2005 E55 AMG Designo. 1 owner, 98,000 miles. I also daily drive my 2010 Tundra crewman.
Amazing video bro keep it up bro
Thanks for the additional explanation of the cause of the oil leak. Makes much more sense now and it shows that CZcams comments can be useful, sometimes.

Love all your Mercedes Content Alex, keep up the good work from the Uk :)
That machine really does bring things back to new...darn. Thing looks BRAND NEW nice and perfect.
I can’t wait to see the finished product! Great job 👏🏽
Just cant believe you can get all that back together! Awesome job!
This content, is exactly why I was drawn to this channel in the first place. Though I enjoy all of your videos because of your unique style, this Mercedes stuff is your bread and butter. Keep it coming. Love it.
So cool. Really dig the media & small bits tumbler. This is going to be a great series. Dying to see dyno after port, polish & new turbos. 👍🚙
That honing machine is awesome. What a difference!
That finish looks amazing!!
You're killing the game, Alex! Keep up the great work, you're representing IL well.
That engine is going to be beautiful once all reassembled. I cannot wait. 😍
Finally finished my 2004 E320 Wagon. Rear ABS ring and sensor, rear coil spring conversion, trans fluid flush, oil change, filters, repair cup holder, repair ashtray cover, replace headlight lenses, two new batteries, replace antenna amp, replace stereo head unit, replace outer tie rod ends, replace tires...
That was incredibly satisfying to watch the cleaning!
Well done 👍 what a true good mechanic
3.0L Duramax Diesel Silverado DD. Came from Hummer H2 that was my daily and Project. Best change I could have made. Amazing Truck, MPG and Power!
My daily IS my project.. I have an 04 SVT Focus. It's pretty clean, and I just got it so there are quite a few things to do.
I got the aftermarket head unit and door speakers working and installed an amp wired in to the factory sub, so it sounds good.
I need to fix the sunroof and repair the horrible exhaust tip install (2.25" into a 5" tip... with holes from rust)
Next, I will dive into lots of maintenance. Timing belt/waterpump and thermostat housing are the first items on the list of real maintenance.
This is EXACTLY the type of content I subscribed for. I do similar types of projects. It's very satisfying to watch, and your advice is always spot on!
Right off the back, Alex's lighting game is on point 👌
Should have put a sand/metal media in the jewelry cleaner to polish all the bolts to new.
I use stainless pins which are easy to clean after. Typically ill do a de-grease/ heavy wash, change the water and do a shine pass.
Moving fast, looking good 👍
Great job and fun to watch.
For rusty nuts and bolts I use Evaporust water based rust remover. I'll leave them soaking overnight and most are rust free the next day. Some badly rusted bolts need more time to remove all the rust. But if your bolts are just dirty, I like the tumbler for quick results.
You can use evaporust in the tumbler, you will be surprised
Your the man for pulling a v12 benz engine in your garage. THE MAN!!
Daily is 2.2 ecotec saturn vue with getrag 5sp; lightweight with lots of usable space and exceptional fuel economy for a 15 year old SUV imho.
Project has been one of four NA miatas (t belt, interior update, and full vinyl wrap), but Sequoia 2UZ project is now underway with 200k mile cooling system refresh and overdue timing belt replacement.
Your videos are an inspiration! 🤙
That tumbler is cool! I reload so I use my vibration tumbler. I let it go for a few hours with corncob media and bolts come out looking new!
Very nice content, love this stuff. 👍👍
Definitely my favourite build/restoration! I like the attention to detail you show us, plus... I’m an AMG guy. Enough said really...
Nothing more satisfying than cleaning something up and making it look new again.
You asked about dailies and projects. Daily is a Tundra and project is a 330ci. The E46 was a bit of a mess and probably won’t ever be super nice, but it’s still a fun car to play with.
I just bought my first AMG because of you!! And of course it is the infamous E55
Love it man thanks for the video
I'm so glad i have 12 more videos in that playlist!
Perfect video ever you did . I love engine disassemble and reassemble 😍😍😍😍😍
My Daily Diver is a C320 CDI W203 Stage1 286HP. Weekend and Summercar is a S350 Cdi W221. Greetings from Germany your videos are great. 👍
Tractor Supply solvent has been my go parts cleaner solvent for years. Works great and they have the best price by far.
with the bolt tumbling, an old mechanic friend of mine made one from a coffee can, two coat hangers, and a old window motor. slap some old nasty gas inside it, chuck in the bolts and walk away, everything looks like OEM again, its great
For your tumbler, look up "stainless steel pins" or "stainless steel chips" - throw that in with some simple green or even Dawn dish soap (it really does take the grease away!) The SS pins/chips usually come in 5lb bags would should be plenty enough for your tumbler. Those little pins/chips will clean every tiny little crevice in your bolts/nuts and make them look brand new.
Can’t wait to see the install details!
The tumbler is for media and small aluminum parts. For bolts, get them re-zinced. It's super cheap. If you wire wheel them, it removes the zinc and it'll rust. Re-zinc is the ticket. Also, use a scotch bright wheel for brushed finishes, also you can buy or make a vapor blaster.
That's a cool parts washer at fluid motor sports. I which I had one too. We use to use the bad stuff and I just hope I don't get skin cancer because of it. Thanks
vapor honing machine is super cool
My daily is a ‘17 F350 Lariat Dually and the current project that has all my attention is baby #1 due in a few weeks 😁
Really entertaining. Can't wait for next video.
For degreasing without using a parts washer, I found Mineral Spirits to work the best plus there's no nasty fumes.
When you’re ready to replenish the mineral spirits try the Blaster from O’Reilly’s, up to 5 gal cans. MUCH lower VOC than mineral spirits. Nitrile, not latex gloves and safety glasses.
I'm always waiting for the v12 engine videos
Awesome view from Singapore 🇸🇬
You're as good with Mercedes's as "M539 restauration" is with BMW's! 👍 Great knowledge and as always awsome job! 😊👍
Cool cleaning tools bro
Ok that vaporizer was cool!!
I recommend checking flatness and twist in mating surfaces before then compare
after this type of "cleaning" it stress relieves the part and puts a twist in the part
I was so hoping you would clean that engine up, but naaah, no one ever does that... (apart from me) so imagine my joy at seeing what you've done. Vapor honing is the best. Bless you my son.
That media parts cleaning cabinet is boss.
Awesome video! In addition to this method I would like to suggest you to take a look at “dry ice cleaning” if you haven’t already. There are some great videos out there on youtube demonstrating it’s effectiveness in engine bay and underside of the car, basically makes it look like brand new (literally)! Love your videos
We had a couple huge media blasters and ultrasonic machines. Ones you could put a bus engine in. Pretty cool
Pro tip: use a magnet to retrieve your bolts from the tumbler.
Also, putting some media like small plastic or glass in the tumbler would "scrub" the parts as well as letting the degreaser do its work. They'll come out looking even better.
most of these bolts are aluminium
@@jameskizon3955 Haha No they aren't. If they were aluminium they would need replacing each use.
@@ryanvandyke2675 Sand would do it.
@@jameskizon3955 you won't be able to pickup those bolts with a magnet if they were aluminum.
I been waiting for this one!
For clean bolts, try a jam jar with lid fitted to a drill, throw in a bit of kiln dried sand and tumble the bolts.
I love watching your content it is very educational teaches me a lot please keep up the videos I enjoy watching them. Thanks
My new project car is a 70 chevelle. Bought for my dad for his retirement present and we both love it. Since I bought it for him he says it both of ours so I’ll second that lol.
So satisfying
WOW, I love that tumbler. Could of totally used that when my engine was torn down
On a serious note, you are doing an awesome job with the cleaning and repair. 👍
Wow, that bolt washer sold out fast!
Amazing job Alex.
