  • Simple Gifts" is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett. a Shaker hymn dance SIMPLE GIFTS words lyrics text aka TIS THE GIFT To Be SIMPLE Lord of the Dance sing along song used by Copland in Appalachian Spring
'Tis the gift to be simple
'tis the gift to be free
'Tis the gift to come down
    where we ought to be,
    And when we find ourselves
    in the place just right,
    'Twill be in the valley
    of love and delight.
    When true simplicity is gained,
    To bow and to bend
    we shan't be ashamed,
To turn, turn will be our delight,
    Till by turning, turning
    we come 'round right.

Bobby yes! I am a music teacher and would sing this with my 5th-7th grade classes, then we would listen to a recording of Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland which used this melody. This song was in our music books. Thanks

AHHHHHHHHHHH I've only heard this played by my female chorus teacher in 6th grade! This is so strange hearing it sung by a person with a deeper voice! It's also really strange to hear them not holding "to come down" as half notes bc that's what we did when I sang it in chorus

I went to a now (almost) defunct Shaker community in Massachusetts who sold this song among others on a CD from their bookstore ...it's now run mostly as a museum to show how the Shakers lived, worked and farmed, etc. I think you could join as a family, but the women and men were separated and no longer lived as husband and wife. And basically that is why they died out. I think this song was attributed to this community in particular.

@@Fern_Edits_ That is just a set of alternate lyrics written in 1963, I believe, by someone in England. The original song, Simple Gifts, was written in 1848 by an American, Joseph Brackett. The tune from Simple Gifts was famously incuded in the 1944 musical composition, Appalachian Spring, by American composer, Aaron Copland, (and originally commisioned for dance by choreographer and dancer Martha Graham). It is a popular orchestral piece, for example, this version by the Franfurt Radio Symphony. (Simple Gifts starts around 18:35 in that version.)
