What does CJ stand for on a Jeep?
In 1944, Willys-Overland, the primary manufacturer of the World War II military Jeep, built the first prototypes for a commercial version - the CJ, short for "civilian Jeep".
What is the difference between Jeep CJ and YJ?
The biggest thing you should know about the YJ is that it was a redesign of the legendary CJ. They came with a stiffer frame, which helps with durability, plus the rear seating area has more protections. Stability was also improved through the use of wider front leaves in the suspension, plus a winder track and body.
What was the most expensive Jeep CJ7 ever sold?
The top sale price was $1,310,000 for a 1981 JEEP CJ7 CUSTOM SUV on January 18 2019.
The earliest beginning of civilian use for the Jeep was begun in 1942 by the US Department of Agriculture. They tested both Willys and Ford versions of the Jeep in typical farming applications at their facility in Alabama and found that they actually worked surprisingly well in the role of farm tractor as well as being a general purpose vehicle. For tractor work they needed lower gearing and a draw-bar, and the clutch would need beefing up, but otherwise they had great potential. Aware of this, and also aware that the Jeep had become a much appreciated vehicle by servicemen, Willys-Overland could see the sales potential of a “Civilian Jeep” and by 1944 they began work on creating one.
The Jeep CJ-7 (1976-1986)
The CJ-7 was to be the last of the line for the Jeeps that could trace their lineage from the World War II Jeep. The CJ-7 was ten inches longer than its CJ-5 sibling with a wheelbase of 93½” and underneath that longer and more curved bodywork was a new chassis design consisting of two parallel longitudinal rails stepped out at the rear to put the suspension as far out as possible for stability. The CJ-5 had received some negative publicity from those claiming it was prone to rollover, which it arguably wasn’t, certainly not more than any other vehicle that featured the necessary off-road ground clearance with the resulting higher center of gravity.

Beautiful CJ! Is that a LS engine?
My father used to have one he gotten in the early 90’s. It was a 1983 CJ-7 in blue color. It had automatic transmission in it. My sister did drove it during the summer of 1990 and a little bit on 1991. She even drove it on the beach once and it did got stuck in the sand. Her friends helped her out. My father gave it to a friend because he wanted it for awhile. He sold it to another person that did a little work on it. My father had gotten a 2002 one but, my mother sold it in the summer of 2017 to a good friend of the family. It had a plow on it and she tried a couple of people to sell it with the plow. Luckily that friend bought it with the plowed on. I only drove the 2002 one a few times over the years. My father only used it to plowed the driveway mostly. It had major work on during the summer of 2016. The last time I drove it was January 1st,2017. It was fun to drive or riding in it.
