  • David Gilmour's phaser tones
    In this video I'll be covering David Gilmour's phaser tones. The Phase 90 was introduced in the mid 70s and soon used by David Gilmour, first introduced in his setup in June 1974. The pedals was used extensively throughout the 1974-75 leg of the Dark Side of the Moon tour and subsequently for the recording of Wish You Were Here. We'll look at David Gilmour's tones and how you can use a phaser to achieve multiple modulation and rotary tones.

    Totally agreed with the phaser before dirt. When I put them after dirt they sound really over the top and domineering. Put them before and there's all the madness of a phaser with a lot of subtlety which I like.
    Also loved your playthrough of any colour you like. One of my fav songs from the band.

    I’m a keyboard player, and I remember picking up my first electric guitar back in the 90’s. Just for fun and to expand my sound palate.
    I didn’t realize it at the time, but all the pedals and effects I was drawn to were the ones that gave me the most Gilmour-esque sound. Phaser has always been my favorite effect, and all my effects give me that PF tone. I even bought EMG SA’s for my Strat back in the 90’s before I knew that’s what David was using!
    It wasn’t until the last couple of years with everyone openly chasing after David’s tone that I realized that’s exactly what I was doing back then!

    I love the phaser in the '75 live versions of the songs. When I first was getting into Floyd, I bought the Boston Garden concert on CD at my local music shop. I had only heard Dark Side of the Moon at that time, so my first ever introduction to Shine On, Dogs, Sheep, Cigar, etc. was from this concert. I loved that phaser tone, and I still do. My favorite is You Gotta Be Crazy. Beautiful sounds.

    My favorite phaser is the Earthquarker Devices Grand Orbiter. I love how it has more control over the effect in comparison to something like the Phase 90. It has Depth, speed, resonance, and sweep knobs with a speed toggle that changes the speed knob from slow, stationary, and fast and a vibrato switch to kill your dry signal. I still love the iconic sound of the Phase 90 though and i completely understand how its simplicity is one of its strengths. Definitely a fantastic pedal to have in one's collection or on their board.

    I recently picked up the wonderful Lost Highway dual phaser by Fender! Extremely versatile and sounds fantastic also has a +3dB boost switch on the back. I love that there are two phasers in one pedal. They can be fully independent, or you can ramp between the two with the sensitivity knob which controls the gate between them. I have the left side set for a slow Uni-Vibe like swirl and the other side is a nice Leslie rotary speaker sound.
    I've been looking around for a decent phaser for some time now but none of them seem to be SLOW enough for me. I almost got the MXR Phase 95 but even all the way down the speed was just too much. For me, this one is just right!
    I've found it useful for very subtle movement as well as Leslie like tones. I'm not a fan of the jet take off type phase and I rarely use phase and dirt at the same time. I mostly prefer just a nice clean subtle phase before my dirt pedals.
    But one of the coolest things is that with the sensitivity knob you can blend in each of the settings with each other. For example, with the settings I have above and increase the sensitivity when you dig in and play harder you get some of the Leslie tone and when you play softer it goes away.
    From the manual
    "Sensitivity Knob:
    When the Slow mode is engaged, the Sensitivity control adjusts the threshold for the Lost Highway’s dynamically controlled rate. As the Sensitivity is turned clockwise, the Lost Highway can automatically switch from Slow to Fast settings with the changes in your instrument’s volume-softer playing will keep the Lost Highway set to your Slow settings; louder playing will send the Lost Highway ramping up to your Fast settings. Turn the Sensitivity control fully counter-clockwise to disable this feature."

    The Whetstone can get classic MXR tones, as well as Uni-Vibe, Rotary, Vibrato, and even some Chorus sounds. All analog, and it has four settings to also do Ring Mod effects.
    The Sibling I use as a tone sculptor, as it is an Optical Phaser, and has a great Volume boost, with ability to go below the 50/50 mix, so it just adds some flavor.

    • @matiasaraya5451
      @matiasaraya5451 Před 5 lety +4

      It depends on the tone that you are looking for, I usually put my phasers after drive, that way I get a grittier, more "nasty" sound out of it, that way it contrasts my friend's more soothing tone (my bandmate puts his phaser before the drives). What I also like to do is to use 2 phasers at the same time with different speeds, one is a phase 90 and the other one is a locally made phaser that has a depth control and a feedback control (how much of the signal feedbacks back to the phaser's circuit), very cool tones with it, combined with fast flanging gives a huge sound, good for 1 note leads (playing multiple notes with it is not recommended tho).

      I agree with both, I run my pedal board with my mods running into my driver's and tube pre amps, but also I have a Boss BE-5 that runs it s compression and drives into delay and chorus but if you use the effects loop it isolates those from each other.

    I agree, you can use any Phaser (I'm currently using an EHX Bad Stone instead of my Phase 90 script & block logo pedals, just for a change - it's starting to become one of my favourites, tied in first place with the classic script Phase90) but I'm wondering if there is a Phaser that can get you closer to Univibe sounds as well as classic Phaser. I've been told that a Phase45 can function as a "faux-Univibe". You mentioned that it's similar to a Univibe, so that has piqued my interest. I guess it's similar to the Chorus as "faux-Rotary" notion.

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the kind words! The Phase 45 is much more subtle compared to a UniVibe but it sounds very similar. The MXR Phase 95 has both the Phase 90 and 45. As does the Svi Sound Techno Phaser that I mentioned in the review. The Dunlop RotoVibe is perhaps the one pedal that I've found that can cover both phasing and UniVibe in one pedal with one effect.

      Doesn't always sound better. Depends on how you want the phase to sound. I have it in my loop of an es8 and moving it before and after the preamp I actually liked it in the loop better. To each their own.

    I found peace with the led script model, I sold the led block logo because it was too invasive. The script model has a truly vintage, balanced and more versatile character.

    I have a Zoom MS70-CDR that I think has a couple of phaser options, but I think I'm going to start buying separate pedals, because with a multi-effects pedal, I can only have it in one spot, and some of the effects I want at different places in my signal chain.

      HX Stomp allows you to place pedals in any order. And it's not that expensive. I don't know if that's the case for other other budget multi-FX pedals.

    I notice the knob pretty much stays at around 11:30 o'clock for most of the video on most of the songs until you get to the rotary part. That seems to be the sweet spot of this pedal, especially for those Gilmour tones and songs. Although this pedal sounds great no matter where the rate is set, but the lower speeds really nail that univibe vibe. Would love to hear Have A Cigar!!! Can't believe you left that one out Bjorn! Is this leading up to a Phase 90 pt.2 video perhaps? Hmm.... 😜

      @gilmourishofficial  Před 5 lety +1

      I've done tons of clips with Have a Cigar so I thought I'd left that one out this time. The Phase 90 can do lots of different tones. Setting it at 8:30 nails those Van Halen tones. Cheers!

      @@gilmourishofficial oh no worries jk, I've seen several vids where you play that riff and you do it well! I always wanted to learn that one, i think it's one of his most funkiest moments that's what I love about it. He really uses that effect to it's full potential all over that album in particular. A very prominent early 70s sound indeed. I always wondered if the sounds on "Time" and "Breathe" were created with a phaser or a univibe, or maybe both? I know there was also a strong Leslie influence as well... which adds a strong chorusing and rotary effect into the mix. I'll definitely have to keep that in mind for the EVH tones, the "brown sound"! I recently required an all original vintage Phase 90 from 1974 in great condition! It sounds amazing! So mellow and warm and groovy and organic sounding, and the effect is alot more subtle and less dramatic/overbearing than the modern recreations and incarnations.

    Now I am pretty sure that David Gilmour used Univibe on Dark Side Of The Moon and Phaser on Wish You Were Here!
    Breathe and Any Color sound better with Univibe.

    Going to afford me one 😂

      Absolutely. It's documented on my site www.gilmourish.com 😉 The idea here was to show that you can use the Phase 90 for different tones and, in fact, Dvaid did use the Phase 90 for Breathe dunring the 1974-75 leg of the Dark Side tour. The UniVibe was eventually taken off the board.

    Have you compared the MXR Van Halen phase next to the custom shop phase 90. I think the Van Halen phase has a 'script' button that is supposed to make it sound more vintage. Your demo was great.

    • @gilmourishofficial

      Thanks! Yes, the VH is very similar. The CS has hard wire bypass, which rolls off some high end, but they also got one with led and true bypass, which I assume, is more or less identical to the VH.
