  • Join me for a few Peaceful Moments on the tenth day of the Camino Portugues from Pontevedra to Armenteira in Spain.
Back at it today after a rest day in Pontevedra leaving town at 7am for a 23km walk.
Just outside of Pontevedra you are faced with a choice of continuing onwards to Santiago on the inland route or taking what's known as the Spiritual Variant which, I believe, adds an extra day to your Camino. Having read many good things about the Spritual Variant this was an easy decision to make.
Once you split off you head towards a small town called Poio where there is the amazing Mosteiro de San Xoán which is well worth a stop. Not only is it an amazing monastery which costs just €2.50 to enter, inside there is an amazing mosaic which I will put in the next video.
From there it is onwards to the lovely seaside town of Combarro which is very much a tourist destination. After an expensive lunch with a sea view, it was onto the main challenge of the day which was to walk pretty much uphill all the way to Armenteira. It was a hot afternoon and it was a long hard slog but well worth it as there were occasional amazing views and upon arriving in Armenteira it felt like a huge accomplishment.
If you are very organized (and lucky?) you can book to stay at the lovely Mosteiro de Santa María. If you do not manage that then you can attend the pilgrim's service in the early evening which I did. There is an albergue in Armenteira but I couldn't pre-book it which is why I stayed at the expensive Pousada de Armenteira which was a rare treat which included a buffet breakfast!
Another great day on Camino and one of the hardest walks, not only with the uphill but the way the day was broken with lunch in Combarro made the afternoon a long haul.

There is no music with this one - just the sounds of what was around
NOTE: I somehow managed to crack the protective glass on my GoPro in Viano do Castelo. This is apparent on all the films I made on this trip from Viano onwards. I have since fixed the issue!
    Some Camino Details
In September-October 2023 I did the Camino Portugues walking about 280km over two weeks from Porto in Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This was 13 walking days and 2 rest days. As many people who have walked a Camino will tell you, it is a life changing experience. I totally agree with this and understand why people keep coming back.
I filmed for 20 to 30 seconds several times each day and these videos are those films put together with some captions added. These films give a pretty good impression of what the walking was like on each day.
I stayed mostly in albergues (cheap hostels for pilgrims) but also in one Airbnb and one nice hotel. I pre-booked most of the accommodation. The walking on this Camino is relatively flat (it is along the coast for the most part) and I walked about 20km each day carrying a backpack which weighed about 20lb - yes, I was carrying too much! The food along the way was AMAZING, as were many of the people encountered. A truly memorable experience.
There is no fixed itinerary for the Camino - you decide how far you want to walk each day and there are usually many options for accommodation along the way. This is the route I chose which I matched with how far I thought was a good distance to cover each day.
Day 1: Porto (Matosinhos) to Povoa de Varzim - 25km
Day 2: Povoa de Varzim to Esposende - 20km
Day 3: Esposende to Viano do Castelo - 25.5km
    Rest Day: Viano do Castelo
Day 4: Viano do Castelo to Caminha - 26km
Day 5: Caminha to Mougás, Spain - 29km
Day 6: Mougás to San Pedro da Ramallosa - 21km
Day 7: San Pedro da Ramallosa to Vigo - 21km
    Day 8: Vigo to Redondela - 16km
    Day 9: Redondela to Pontevedra - 21km
    Rest Day: Pontevedra
    Day 10: Pontevedra to Armenteira - 23km

What a nice route. We were curious about it. Thanks for sharing. We went north from Pontevedra to Barro and Portas to Caldas de Reis. Beautiful day. The anticipation gets stronger when you get below 40 km.

Thanks. I highly recommend the Spiritual Variant. I'd love to go back and do another Camino - perhaps I could try the route you took!

Actually we want to do that route the next time, because you know it's not a matter of if, it's when. We're also planning a slower pace, doing 10 miles a day and taking more time for exploring.🙂@@peacefulmoments386
