I have to say that to my eye, the old ones seem to have a lot more saturated colors than the new ones, which could also contribute to the perception of the new ones being especially dark.
yeah this is probably the case, you could calculate the sum distances from the individual colors to the average and if it has higher contrast the number will be higher. I'm doing this for the blocks for another video.

Its because they used a different method to convert them to the game back then, and purpusefully made them more saturated
I guess the older paintings had more contrast too, so even when there was pure black, brighter colors were shown along with it

Paintings have always been too bright for more dreary and serious locations, I like the variety.

the paintings have a different theme to them, but i kinda like them. Especially the pack.png paining, which is confirmed by slicedlime because of the seed finding community.

They need to add more boss paintings. Elder Guardians w/reg. guardians, the Dragon, the Warden (Ik Warden isn't a boss). Maybe even some other tougher mobs like the Breeze and Piglin Brute.
Im pretty sure the only reason the wither painting was originally added was so casual players had a way to find out how to summon the wither. If we got more paintings with the same intent for the other bosses, it would probably end up showing like steve sneaking near a warden (for warden painting), shooting end crystals (for dragon painting), and probably just a cow in a boat above the ocean monument (for the elder gaurdian)
yep, they need various representing the "big mobs". I called like that because "boss" we only technically have 2, the wither and the dragon, since non of the other "big mobs" have a bossbar (warden, elder guardian, the breeze nor the piglin brute)

@@demichi_ The elder guardian has been referred to as a boss, and the warden doesn't have a bossbar because it's health is irrelevant
@@demichi_ Breezes are extremely far from being considered a "big mob"; it's neither big visually nor particularly strong, even Evokers and Hoglins are stronger than it.
It's also pretty pointless adding those paintings since there's already guides/hints for all of those mobs you mentioned in the game through maps or advancements.

Woah, how do you such smooth animation in minecraft?
Generally it's a lot of tiny teleport commands just like how a smooth video is merely a lot of pictures, all wrapped in a datapack. However, simply making things teleport at a constant rate is not enough to make a smooth animation (see Slow In Slow Out, the 6th of the 12 principles of animation) so Gneiss also added an implementation of an easing function to the datapack so that things move more smoothly by starting slow, then speeding up, and gradually slowing down near the end.

I‘m pretty sure pack.png was created by notch, though, i don‘t know if the new painting (unpacked), isn‘t just pack.png, or if some changes were made, in the former case, I would say Notch was the author of that painting.
pack.png is simply a cropped screenshot, the painting is a whole new pixel art piece. Would you give full credit of the painting to the photographer who simply provided the reference?
I didn‘t have the yet get a good look at it, if it is actually just an art piece based on pack.png and not pack.png itself, then of course. That was, why I was asking.

I think new paintings are neat and I don't mind darkness, in fact I find it more appealing than bright ones, it reminds me of paintings in baroque era which often have dark backgrounds

Honestly, I feel like it’s more of a case of the new paintings having a darker vibe. Like on average they seem a bit more, like. Ominous, I guess, while the old ones were just a little odd. But that’s not really a quantifiable thing in any way lol

It's good to have darker paintings to balance out the lighter ones. If all the new ones were as light I feel like mojang would have had a harder time justifying why they needed to be added in the first place.
I think it was a good idea to add a lot of new paintings and not just one or two. It if it was less it would just make the stereotype of them as lazy even worse. These new paintings are well more content and more flavour. And when it comes to decor in minecraft more is simply more.
It'd be extremely easy to justify why they should add paintings even if it's on the lighter side-- it's Minecraft's 15th anniversary and the new paintings are made by the original creator of MC's paintings, they didn't add them just because "we need more darker paintings" especially when you consider that each of those paintings are picked by Kristoffer himself-- not Mojang or the lead artists.
Not that I'm complaining tho, is there even complaints about the new paintings being "too dark"?

I think they were originally a pocket edition thing and the textures were added to java years ago but we had no way of accessing them besides just looking at the files. I think they were made accessible as paintings a version or two ago.

I had thought about doing this with the frames removed but since they are different I just decided them to be part of the art. It probably would not make much different on the large frames, but it might for the smaller ones. Something else that I thought of doing was base the average on the size of the picture, so a small and a large painting would not be counted equal and averaged to the middle but I ended up just that. Where each painting has the same weight when averaging the groups.
@@gneissname true, they won't affect the average all that much, but when viewing the painting it might still give a different appearance with the contrast
