Mirage F1s Shoot Down F-14 Tomcats (Iran-Iraq War)

  • The war between Iran and Iraq started in 1980 and initially, Iraqi Air Force suffered greatly the the most modern and potent fighter in Iranian arsenal - F-14 Tomcat. Their MiG-21s and MiG-23s had no answer for Tomcat's radar and missiles. In 1981, the French started to deliver their Mirage F1s to the Iraqis. This third generation fighter wasn't on par with the F-14, but was an improvement nevertheless. And with some creative tactics, it could be used effectively against it. Were the Iraqis successful in shooting down any Tomcats? Find out in this video featuring the first new jet fighter module in DCS World in over two and a half years - Mirage F1.

    It's rarely a question of who is flying the "better" aircraft, but rather of being in the right place at the right time and knowing how to exploit the opportunity.

    • @showtime112
      @showtime112  Před rokem +2

      Exactly, there are dozens of factors which decide the outcome of air battles. A more capable aircraft gives you more options but nothing is guaranteed. I laughed my head off when on some videos, some people tried to 'prove' that it was impossible for an aircraft to shoot down another simply because the victim belonged to a more recent generation.

    I heard somewhere that one of the bigger problems iranian Tomcats had initially was that their RWR could not recognise the French radar signals as threats, so they could actually be snuck up to, locked on and hit... but that was later somehow fixed...

    • @showtime112

    • @Lemard77
      @Lemard77 Před rokem +6

      Another problem was the other missiles the Iranians had. Other than the Phoenix, the F-14s were stuck with rear aspect AIM-9J and older AIM-7E that were inferior to what the Iraquis had in their late MiG-23s and Mirage F1s (R-60MKs, R-24R, Magic 1, Super 530F).
      In regards to RWR all were in a rough spot, the ALR-45 in the F-14A wasn't optimized for air to air threats of any type as Cipher commented, their F-5s had no RWR at all and the F-4E would have had similar strobes type RWR as the one in the early F-14A. On the other hand SPO-10 in the MiG-21s and 23s can't tell the threat type and early F1EQs had the CSF-Thomson BF RWR which is similar in presentation to the SPO-10 (just four warning lights with very little threat classification).
      Only the very last batch of F1s the Iraquis got, the EQ-6, had a modern digital RWR with threat library classification.

To be objective it needs to be mention F-14 in Iranian service had many weaknesses: best US-trained pilots had been executed or jailed, most of its avionics including RWR and radars was barely operational or didn't work at all due to lack of spare parts and ground crew expertise, most effective weapon supply has been depleted early in the war and US obviously didn't sand more. At the same time Iraqi aircrafts were using their best crews, had constant flow of spare parts and effective weapon and properly skilled ground technicians and working avionics, radars and other systems.

      Nah it wasn’t an early 4th generation fighter and shouldn’t be considered as such. It‘s capabilities were similar to the F-4 or the Mig 23. When not met in an ambush the F-14 absolutely crushed the F1 and achieved a much much higher kill ratio over it.

    • @showtime112
      @showtime112  Před měsícem

      Not exactly. According to USN official site, Iran bought Phoenix missiles at about 547.000 USD per missile. As for MiG-23 cost, some online sources say that Soviets were selling the MS variant at between 3.6 and 6.6 million at the time. MS was the export version with older avionics, advanced models probably cost more. As for Su-22, there's info about Peruvian purchase in late 1970s. 250 million for 32 airframes, including spare parts and weapons. But even if the missile is more expensive, any piece of military equipment operated by the enemy can in theory cause a much greater damage so it's still worth using an expensive weapon to destroy it.

    1) Iranian pilots were saving their phoenix missiles and would only fire them as last resort due to sanctions and lack of spare parts.
    2) pretty much all the NATO nations including Russia were supplying Iraq with weapons and Iran was on its own
    3) Given all the odds stacked against Iran with lack of spare parts or inability to purchase any weapons, Iran did a fantastic job destroying Iraqi air bases and having air superiority. Let's not forget that this was a war between Iran and NATO and Russia. Iraqis had access to satellites, American support, and intelligence, including America's support in jamming Iranian radars. The stupidity of some of the statements made about the Iraqi mirages is beyond belief. Mirage F1 was no match for an Iranian F14 if the F14 was in good shape and not fighting the Mirages alone. In any one case the flight of F14s were no more than 2 ,and in thegreat majority of cases a single F14 would had to tackle up to 6 Mirages or Migs. They would send a flight of six or more Mirage F1s out at low altitude and they would appraoch their target where F14 was on cap, and fire all their radar/heat seeking missiles all at once and hope that one would hit. Iraq had no problem getting masses of missiles or fighters from the Soviets or from France, unlike Iran who was under heavy sanctions by the US and the West. Although Iran had purchased 80 F14 from the US , only 79 were delieverd, the max number of Iranian F14s who were battle ready was less then 24. At the onset of the war, neither the AIM9 Sidewinder nor the AIM7 Sparrow were interfaced properly with the F14s, so they had to rely on their AIM54 misslies that were for long range interception, and not for dog fighting, an dtheir numbers were quite low in the Iranian inventory. Iran is a vast country, nearly 1/2 the size of Europe, and these aircraft had to be deployed sparingly and thinly. Iraq lost in excess of 200 aircraft to the Iranians in its 8 year war with Iran, 42 of them in one instance in the attack on the H3 base near the Jordanian border. In later years Iraq also enjoyed the protection of the US navy in the Persian Gulf. The US Ships would provide a radar umbrella for the Iraqis, but the US would report the position and the movement of the Iranian F4s and F14s to the Iraqis through their stooges the Saudis who would immediately relay the information to the Iraqis. This was to maintain the impression of neutrality on the part of the US. All these were told me by my school friend who was the pilot of an F14, and yes he was also a graduate of the Top Gun school , and an Instructor. As for the obsudity of the Iraqi claims ablout tehir losses, suffice to point out that one Iranian ace Major Zandi, had 11 confirmed kills, 5 of which were Mirage F1. There were many Zandis in the Iranian airforce flying both the F4s. and F14s.

      That's right, but it was almost zero in the way of supporting Iraq. American Oaxes watched the entire war, but they weren't always in iraq. The Chemical Bombers of the French Soviet Armaments had equipped the Pillar of the Iraqi Army. You knew that Iranian pilots were shaking the Phoenix missile because of the lack of missiles in an emergency, and that they first used the Sparrow missile because it was cheaper.
