  • There are many provocative ideas that have been proposed about the ultimate nature of our universe. In this episode of Subatomic Stories, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln discusses the possibility that our universe might actually be a simulation.

    Among all the "science" channels that treat these outlandish theories as if they had some scientific credibility, it sure is nice to find this series that makes it clear that they are almost entirely speculative. Your sensible discussion of these topics is an excellent sanity check and much appreciated.

    😢 Sad that’s the end of the series. It’s been my favorite on this channel. I gather that going deeper into the math is assumed unviable for CZcams, but I wish there was more to this series. The lecture portion of each video seemed to be ~10-15 minutes on average, for (very roughly) ~6-10 hours on all of particle physics and astrophysics. 😑
    Ah well. You still did a great job with it. Gratitude to DOE for supporting this endeavor (and FermiLab, obvs!). And gratitude to you, Dr. Lincoln, for putting in such a thoughtful, consistent, and sincere effort to share understanding of physics with everyone that understands English. Channels like this are a validation of the positive potential promised by the internet. I’ll be looking forward to the next series. 🙂

    Isn't the Planck's length the natural candidate for the smallest possible distance in the simulation?

    • @randysmith9715
      @randysmith9715 Před 3 lety +5

      That thought hit me too! I wonder if you could extrapolate the Plank length and determine the number of bits in the simulation???

    • @SkorjOlafsen
      @SkorjOlafsen Před 3 lety +12

      The best description of the Planck length is not "the minimum length" but "the length at which the math breaks in current theory". It's probably not physically interesting. Also, for a simulation, there'd be no need to be that fine grained, it's 10 orders of magnitude smaller than anything we can guess the size of. It would just be wasteful.

    • @TWX1138
      @TWX1138 Před 3 lety +12

      @@SkorjOlafsen Respectfully, we wouldn't know what they are looking for in the simulation that we're in. Similarly we have no means of evaluating what their universe is like. We could be as simple to them as the _Game of Life_ screensaver on so many Linux and UNIX systems is to our reality.
      This is of course making a supposition about the possibility of our reality being a simulation. I find it unlikely but not impossible, and until knowing with certainty I must simply go on with life.

    • @Onnozelfilmpje
      @Onnozelfilmpje Před 3 lety +6

      Indeed. Isn't that more or less what Quantum Loop Gravity says? Or with a stretch, String theory, where the"bits" are strings? To get to the Planck length, you need all the energy of the universe, not just a puny accelerator. If we are in a simulation, it probably can't be broken from within it; that would be a bug.

    • @SkorjOlafsen
      @SkorjOlafsen Před 3 lety +3

      @@TWX1138 Fair enough. After all, we could be an accident of the simulation, not the point of it.
