- While covering a story on the Great Western Greenway, Mayo News editor, Neill O’Neill, gets more than he bargained for when meeting an elderly man with an amazing story to tell.
The Local Eye looks at local newspapers in Ireland and celebrates the vital role they play in their local communities, looking at the serious business of fighting on behalf of their localities, finding the stories that matter to their readers and having some craic along the way.
The man on the left Neill O’Neill died in 2017 aged 36. RIP.
That man loves his mother. God rest her.🙏

@@ellenhughes115 yes Ellen, what a lovely man, I particularly was touched when he said I think of her every night 😞 sad to hear that the young journalist in the clip died aged 40.

ggg Indeed he does and I know how he feels. My own mother died going on 13 years ago this November. This man and I must be related - he looks just like my mother's people from the O'Connor side ( Co. Leitrim ) . I pray for both of my parents each and every day, and still miss them greatly.
Lovely old man....full of deep emotion and heart. Bless him.
The old fella reminds me of my father and lads I used to work with on building sites ..brilliant men ..hard as rocks with hearts of gold ..will never see the likes of them again ..bless them all ..
Very true fella, I worked with many in London, by God did them men work,

Love the honesty of the older generation !! There a dying breed . IDE listen to him all day 👍

I think it's a semi-contradictory filthy purity that shines through, unscuplted and unpretentious, and absolutely trustworthy.
Yeah...they came from a time when there wasn't so much unnecessary information, there was more clarity and more family bonds...we didn't realize what we were giving up chasing our materialistic tails.
@@juliapigworthy Filthy Purity? Now that is pretentious. Did you study Arts in Galway?

He’s the most beautiful man 👨 I’m in awe - serious good heart. Rare to find.

@UCoS0BGs2a9DkN4C2xf8BTgg You are free to make such false judgements and projections Mr "Deus Vult, Keyboard Warrior", I however am not triggered or offended by your false judgement of me as you seem to have been about my simple reply to you. Perhaps you have some growing up and/or toughening up to do so you don't feel the need to react in such a cringey and immature way in future and make a fool of yourself again any time a basic reply to a comment you post on a public platform open for communication gets a reply that hits a nerve.
EDIT: Looks like you deleted your comment as I posted my reply. Well, that's that.
My grandmother used to say"tell the truth and shame the Devil"
My late grandmother once said 'youth is a curse, old age a blessing'.
My mum got that off her granny too, she still says it herself
As the devil, I must say your grandmother was wise.
Not heard that in YONKS
So did my mother.
What a lovely genuinely warm hearted man.
He made me sad but also laugh as like all the Irish who have this charming gift.❤❤❤
Reminds me of my uncles in Ireland , all gone now RIP
I love listening to men of this generation. They were no strangers to hard work and coming from the barren west of Ireland, had their fair share of hardships along the way..
He speaks with such passion from the heart..❤
those generations had true grit,,,most people today are too snowflaked to even handle such times!!!

Loved listening to these guys in the pubs years ago, especially the ones you didn't know, I was sat in some small pub in Sligo some years ago and listening to two old fellas arguing about how deep the undertaker put a coffin, one was arguing it was 20 foot deep! The other was going mad trying to make him realise how deep 20 foot was, ya couldn't get that kind of entertainment at a comedy club. 😂
Yea most of them diggers keep going and trying to hear the fires of hell and the others tell the stories in the local pub what great west of ireland people
My grandad was from Sligo as well, when we would visit, we would help in at his farm. I could have listen to him chat with his country friends all day. Tons of stories, banter and charm.
Only lawyers are buried 20 under twenty feet of earth, because deep down they are decent people!🤣
There's another saying "He's so lazy, that if there was work in the bed, he'd get out"

Covid isn't the problem nowadays, it's the absolute lack of logic.......😃
That man was head journalist of the Mayo news and was more than likely doing a separate article for his paper. He is also since deceased may he rest in peace. Know the facts Misty peppercorn
@@declanmurphy8399 first of all I didn't know the man had died, and the second fact of him is invalid because neither of us knows if he was writing another article for himself or a paper, if he was a head journalist why didn't he just take the notes as he edited the video later on since he would be able to take better notes without the rushing. I was pointing out the logic of it all.
