In this clip, John Salley reflected on the passing of Michael K. Williams and the legacy he leaves behind. He also talked about how watching the effects certain drugs have on people kept him away from experimenting with them, particularly cocaine, heroin, and crack. John Salley and Vlad left each other with parting words about getting older and aspirations of making it to elderly status. In 1986 when Len Bias died-- my dad drilled that into me and my siblings head about the dangers of drugs...
I was 12 yrs old.
That dude snorted that $hit ONE TIME and died instantly...
That's all I needed to know...

I don't think that's actually accurate. Not that it matters as far as how it registered with you. Not doing coke is a good thing. But I'm pretty sure Len had been doing blow for a while and this was one final blowout with his college friends and he did way too much. That's how I remember it.

I’ve never tried because of Len too! I was in 6th grade and that left a big impression on me as young basketball player that if you try it once you could die!!
I'm from Toronto and I remember my parents sending me and my brother to NJ for the summer back in the 80s. Basketball coverage was very limited t here back then and I was excited to watch the draft for the first time in my life.
And 2 days later I remember watching ESPN and seeing the newsflash: "Len Bias dead of drug overdose".
I couldn't sleep and had cold sweats that entire night.
I met Mrs Bias ,Lens Mom.she toured the Country speaking at schools and and Colleges I think .What a beautiful Woman turning such a tragedy into a Great Message..GodBless her I think she has since passed if not Thank You if so May She rest in Eternal Peace.

Same thing for me. I saw my dad on cocaine, he isn’t dead but I definitely saw him rage off it which scared and traumatized me at like 24-25. Like John Sally said, I don’t even like nasal spray. I don’t like shit that isn’t weed lol. I thank the heavens for resilience cause the amount of times it can be offered to you is wild.
I don't nor have I ever smoked weed or done any drugs and the death of Len Bias plays a part in why I've never gotten involved in that life.

My pops grew up in the 60s and 70s where the nba teams used to go high school to high school to draft players and my father said he couldve been on that celtics team but they did too much dope

I remember my dad telling me a story where he tried cocaine in weed one time.
He told me one second, he was trying it out and the next second him and his friends was on the ground looking for more. He said he would never try it again. That was all I had to hear to make sure to never try it.
facts. I remember a knew a couple kids in study hall who would talk about oh you just gotta know yourself and do it the "right" way. They're all doing nothing with their lives now. No "right way" to do the wrong thing.

I was in the 4th grade when Len Bias died. It was during the height of the Nancy Reagan campaign, "Just Say NO!". Everybody said Len tried cocaine for the first time to celebrate being drafted into the NBA and it destroyed his heart. It was a grim cautionary tale, but I am 46 and I have never tried drugs or been around people who do drugs!! It's a shame we never got to see Len Bias shine in the NBA, that would have been awesome!!

Wow...No lie, THIS IS THE SAME EXACT REASON IVE NEVER TRIED COCAINE MUCH LESS ANY OTHER DRUG BESIDES MY BELOVED GREENERY. I heard this story as a kid, scared me straight asf...especially the part about his heart exploding...and my mother was a drug addict, it was never glamourous to me, there was always tragedy tied to it. The fun part of it was short-lived.

Len was a regular user of cocaine which was exposed immediately after he signed. As we all know, drugs hinder all abilities eventually. MJ IS the stand alone for that era. Len unfortunately made decisions that sadly cost him his life.
Check out his 30:30 on ESPN if you haven’t seen it already. The truth came out and it was very sad.
@@thatbemefool that’s not entirely true, I was 21 when Bias died and I remember clearly the Autopsy report said there was no evidence of regular use of cocaine because regular users over time develop scar tissue on their heart and Bias had none of this and Brian Tribble who went on trial for supplying the Coke said Bias was a regular user but he’s going to say anything at that point to try and save his ass. Also the Coke was found in his intestines not his nasal cavity almost like he drank the coke.
