This made me watch the anime AND find out about Carpenter Brut 4 years ago, so damn good
its too time consuming for modern anime so it wouldn't make studios as much money as quickly done and generic type animation, and especially with the wages that animators have in japan this sort of time consuming and exhausting work (even if it is extremely pretty) is too much to ask for.
It's actually part of a Kerberos saga which started in 1987 with some radio dramas (essentially you just listen to the audio and simulate the visuals yourself)
Ah yes Jin Roh was such a good movie. They spent a good 5 years hand animating it. The ending really got to me and damn I do highly recommend this anime film to those who are fans of political war drama and bloody amazing uniforms and armor.
Just looked up the Wiki entry on Jin-Roh:

Jesus fuck me in the shitter Christ. For those who don't know, a "cel" is a drawing on a transparent sheet that is then photographed to create the animation. Usually there's 1 large background image cel, then characters and objects are drawn on the transparent sheets. So for Jin-Roh, it was using a little over 13 cels per second at 24 frames per second. The industry standard is 12.
That means you have only a couple of cels for stationary objects and backgrounds, then dozens of cels being used for characters and moving props....per second. That means one second of animation where someone just stands up has: 1 painting used for the background, 1 drawing layer for any props, then like two dozen drawings of the character. All for just a few moments for a simple action.
For some reference, Akira: used 160,000 cels and Alice in Wonderland had approximately 58,500.

@DevilTrigger If I remember correctly, Wolf Brigade universe is set in an alternate timeline where Germany won the war and Japan still got recked by the atom bombs. So the Nazis sent his arsenal to keep his allied in check. That's why rebels use american weaponry and the Japan gov use badass germany tech.

@@bazinga8203 i served in the army in Chile and here they use both, mg42 are manned by 3 soldiers, ammo carrier, the stand-carrier and the lmg operator. For the mg3 they use more like a long range rifle, but they were super prone to jamming. Whenever i watch this AMV i can still sorta hear the sound of the mg42 firing 🤔

The live action adaptation of Jin-roh is called Illang: The Wolf Brigade. It's an alright movie in my opinion in that it perfectly nails many of the aesthetic points of western authoritarianism channeled through an eastern lens, but the story is so heavily altered from the source material (particularly the ending) that it only really resembles Jin-Roh in a superficial way. Again, that isn't to say it's a bad movie--it has plenty of really interesting action sequences that make it well worth watching, but it doesn't even take place in Japan, instead occurring in Korea and pertaining to external political pressure attempting to prevent the unification of the north and south. Totally different setting than the original.
But the armor still looks incredible.
So what doesn't change is the story and armor but the location and context?

Maybe not 50, but plenty of dead soldiers in world war 2 were found with multiple hits from 7.92mm Mauser rounds. With a cyclic rate of fire of ~1500 rounds per minute, it's almost impossible to hear individual rounds being fired. (and while yes, it'll be fired with short bursts, it's still going to let loose a lot of lead down range in a short time...that's the point of it.)

This I know, it's actually quite obvious. But I'm referring to some specific details, such as the red glasses that glow in the dark, for example. I suspect the art direction from Wolfenstein: the New Order also took inspiration from this anime.

There was a real golden era for anime. That's not to say there isn't brilliant anime put out nowadays, but holy shit - did everything not just feel RIGHT in the 90s / early 2000's? There was love and soul put into every frame.... Akira.. Wolf's Rain.. Jin-Roh.. Berserk...Cowboy Bebop, Hajime No Ippo.. just to name a very small few... but will always be titans, and the best of the best, no matter what era we move into.
Carpenter Brut really inspired me to make my own music channel, I first became aware of them through Hotline Miami and followed them ever since; this and Le Perv are two of my favourites!

I really enjoy jin roh on quite a few lews, from the fantastic designs and detail to the story, but most importantly the themes. The existence of the wolfbrigade caused the resistance groups to grow so well armed that only the wolfbrigade can properly combat them. The creation of predators from regular citizens and the expendable nature of entire organizations

Jin Roh is a story in an alternate reality where Nazi Germany wins WWII and Japan takes on a lot of the equipment.

I'd say your best bet of finding more would be to just look at cyberpunk anime. Not all of it is like this, but there is a heck of a lot of stuff that has the same feel as this (Ghost in the Shell, Akira ect)

Don't think a specific name, just more realistic. Mostly present in older anime, like Ghost in the Shell for example.
New series sadly either skip on animation and use low-detail low-quality one, use an awful 3D animation, or use a "cute" style which is one of the reasons so many people dislike anime in general
