Loved this video 🤩 Probably my favorite one from Japan as we showed so many different places (pretty much all the Must-visit attractions in Kyoto). Since it’s a very complete and longer video than usual, it took more hours for Chris to edit but I’m very proud of him as (in my humble opinion) he did a really great job. I already told him in person but I thought he deserves a public comment as well 😂❤️

We just got back to America after spending 3 months in Japan and I already miss it! The people, the politeness, the cleanliness, the toilets, the quite subways and trains not to mention the amazing sites! Make sure you check out the 300 ft Buddha in Kotoku-in located at Kamakura if you haven’t already been! Have a great time!

Excellent video again. I loved your summary evaluation at the end. It is really amazing how such an ancient culture, with its own architecture, religious manifestations, eating culture, language and writing system, etc. can develop uniquely in the world, separate from western culture, and still manifest human universals that tie us together as a human race with similar needs and desires. Thanks for battling the crowds and doing all the walking so that I could have a good look at Japan!

Kyoto!! outrageously beautiful. The river tours bamboo forest really nice. My favorite would be all of the old wooden buildings everywhere. The Japanese temples gardens and scenery are so unique and amazing. Probably my favorite city in Japan. 😊

I saw the news a few days ago that after the world's largest 7-11 is located in Taiwan, the world's largest Starbucks will be located in Taipei.
In the future, you will have two more world attractions when you come to Taiwan!
The way you hold chopsticks is very standard. In fact, don’t worry too much. Chopsticks are just tools for eating. Holding chopsticks is not a competition!
That river is really beautiful, and it makes people suddenly feel like traveling through time and space!

The landscape behind the big banana chair is so beautiful, no wonder it has become a popular photo spot for tourists!
What you mentioned last is actually something I also have heard from Japanese people saying that they refuse foreign guests because they are afraid of poor service!
In fact, I think that may be an excuse, but it is mainly due to nationality and personal factors!

hello Chris and Carol, I am from Peru but living in San Francsico California, I loved it when you were in Peru and now in my other favourite country (Japan) I follow all your trips and please keep up with the good quality. By the way, I met someone in Brazil and I go there all the time.
Great videos on Japan. It seems like a spectacular place. I’m looking forward to your videos in China. I lived there for eight years. I highly suggest Zhang Jia Jie (where Avatar was filmed at), Xi’an (Terracotta Warriors, amazing food street in the city and outside of the city), Beijing (Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, eat a Beijing hotpot, etc, etc), Chengdu (Sichuan hotpot, Leshan Giant Buddha, Pandas), Shandong Province for Qingdao (occupied by the Germans/famous for beer, beautiful coastal city, has Mt. Laoshan)and Tai’an to climb Mount Tai, Guilin to take a boat up the Li River to Yangshuo (one way, 4 hrs, drink lots of water, be careful of the sun, but the view is like you’re on a different planet. The limestone mountains are spectacular! I could recommend a ton more. I was there eight years and travelled all the time, but couldn’t see even half of what I wanted…

The statues you referred to as dogs are actually foxes (kitsune), and are associated with Inari Shrines (dedicated to rice, fertility, agriculture, etc.). The kitsune serve as messengers (to the Shinto spirits) and guardians (similar to the lion-dogs, the Komainu). Also, besides what you mentioned regarding shrines versus temples, Shinto Shrines usually display the Crest of the Imperial Family of Japan, whereas Temples associated with the Hongwanji sect of Buddhism in Japan, present a wisteria crest. You will also find a swastika corresponding to the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism (though swastikas are also used to indicate the locations of Buddhist Temples on maps in general), representing peace, good luck, etc. Ironically, the Nazis employed a benevolent symbol that long preceded their evil regime.
Also, Todaiji Temple in Nara (housing the Daibutsu or Great Buddha) is the largest wooden building in the world. It was completely rebuilt in 1709, and is only 70% the size of the original structure. Moreover, nails were not used in the construction. The wooden structure consists of interlocking pieces.
Most japan restaurants closed around 3 or 4 pm before they open again in late afternoon into the night.

It’s been so great seeing Japan through your eyes. I ended up falling in love with Japan last year. I think you guys got lucky going at a slow time because when I went in September, there were hoards of tourist in the famous spots by 10am. Especially in Kyoto.
yeah i think it is because this was a few weeks after the cherry blossom season which is probably when the majority of people tried to come, so we got a bit of a quieter time

I’m from Japan and totally enjoyed your videos! It made me miss my country a lot! I’m sorry some restaurants turned you away! It does happen to Japanese locals as well. I think especially the ones that have been in the business for so long often times have their way of running their business and that could be harsh, rude and confusing to even locals. It’s cool you were chill about it! I feel also how some Japanese are just intimidated to deal with foreigners could be one of the reasons they end up rejecting to have foreigners. It’s lame. But, hey, that’s their loss! Also, the recent years’ hype to trip to Japan is causing the over-tourism there, the country is just the size of California, and there’s a possibility some restaurants might have had some bitter expériences with tourists from foreign countries in the past. Well, who knows! Again, while it seems odd and wrong for them to turned down their potential customers, that’s their loss! But,sorry, if it gave you some awkward experiences! Thank you for the beautiful videos!

Lol! I can confirm your chopstick game could use some work! I think you were using the fat end which would make them upside down.
Hold onto the top stick with just your thumb and first finger. This is the finger that moves the chopstick. Then with your other 3 fingers you hold the second stick firmly. This stick does not move at all giving you stability. All the movement is with the top stick with one finger. That ends your unsolicited chopstick lesson!! Have you tries Uni yet? It is a very Japanese delicacy! Sea urchin roe. Happy Travels
Some of the history I learned when I lived in Japan. Is Kyoto, temples....some a thousand years old and still are perfect. The reason , the master skills it took to build them was passed down in secret. Father to son, going back tens of generations. Understand what you see was all done by hand tools. The engineers who designed roof lines to extend that far out, was not able to be done anywhere else , a thousand years ago. Also, all of the forests around the temples are more than just for looks. The Japanese monks, plant the same trees, like a thousand years ago.... They protect them and let them grow for hundreds of years, watching over them... The reason is so the master craftmen, will have replacement, timbers of the same trees as the very first ones used.
And trust they are protected trees, and when they cut one down , it's a big deal. And when one has to be used. A new tree will be planted and watched over for the hundreds of years to follow..... Understanding this, when you see, just temples.... You will then see much more.. and you'll understand why the towns seem, quiet, people all are respectful to not be loud... Tokyo, is 100% the opsitits .
What I came to learn is this. Japan, 2000 years ago, were building temples, no one else could. Africa 2000 years ago, lived in mud huts, running around naked in jungles. The middle east 2000 were killing each other fighting over who stole who's Camel. Europe 2000 years ago... Lived in cabins, then go to China 4000 years ago, they had advance MILTTARY, tudys the stars. Built full blown city's, greater than the Romens. As you two jump around, buy the small book called ECHANG , ( Cannon of change ) yeng and yang , its. 5000 years old and still in print... The China's empires, was to be lived to be given the secret of life by GOD.

What was exactly the name from the boat tour and location(adresse). I was 2 times in Japan at spring season. Now I wanted to travel with my wife in autumn. It’s her first long distance travel so I wanted to enjoy the time together with her.

Inari also means shrine that worship the god of harvest.
It also means fox 🦊 that’s why you see fox statues there.
That hotel next to the river is called Suiran and you were right about the price: their cheapest room is 950 euros per night.
Actually, the one in the video is Hoshinoya Arashiyama. Suiran is on the same side of the river they were shooting from.

Geisha are highly trained professionals, educated, witty, perfect manners. they are successors of the culture in Kyoto. We need to pay respect them. I'm glad it became ban to take photos of them .😊

There are some restaurants and bars in Japan that even Japanese people cannot enter. Only a small number of Japanese people enter there. We Japanese understand that so we don't try to enter such restaurants. However, tourists from overseas don't know this, so they overreact when they try to enter and are turned away, or when they see a sign that says "No Foreigners Allowed." It's a way of doing business and if you can't guarantee their livelihood for the rest of your life, accept it.
understand if it's some private club but it wasn't always the case. One restaurant literally had their restaurant name translated in english and their outside menu was all translated in english, when we arrived they said we couldn't enter because we don't speak Japanese lol. Another time we entered a restaurant and there were 2 tables of foreigners but the owner told us it was closed, as we are walking out one of the tables turn to us and tell us that it's open which then created a kind of awkward situation when they saw the guy telling us it was closed again. Overall it happened about 6 times and the majority never seemed like some private style place, just super touristy places. Either way i can understand why foreigners find it strange because this kind of thing basically never happens anywhere else, being turned away when you are trying to support someones business
That sucks specially if you're hungry and you get turned away for not speaking Japanese. 😮
@@JumpingPlaces I see. That feels a little strange, doesn't it? I think 6 times is a lot. But I think it's too subjective to say that it doesn't happen elsewhere. This is because Japanese tourists are often talked about being refused entry to restaurants in Europe. A while ago, a Japanese CZcamsr was making a fuss about being kicked out after being told there were no seats even though there were obviously empty seats. In the comments section of that video, I told the Japanese CZcamsr, "If you don't know the real reason why someone kicked you out, you shouldn't make a fuss about it." There may be a reason behind it that you can understand if you listen to it. If you think you should be allowed to enter the store for any reason, you're being arrogant, and that's not how Japanese law works.
We didn't make a fuss about it, we just left the places and ate somewhere else and didn't even mention it in those videos at the time. I'm just saying that it was the only kind of negative thing there that happened. We don't have to pretend we like everything everywhere we go, we are allowed to like and dislike things.

Even in Kyoto alone, there are many other sightseeing spots worth visiting such as Toji Temple which has the tallest 5-story pagoda, World Heritage site, and Sanjusangendo Temple with a 1,000 golden buddhism statues, and Nijo Castle, also a World Heritage site. To really enjoy Japan, come back again next time to see other places. My recommendations are Shirakawa-go, Takayama City, the Blue Pond and Shikisai No Oka in Biei Town of Hokkaido, Hakodate, Nikko, Hakone, Mt. Fuji, Kanazawa, Narai-juku, Hiroshima, Kintaikyo, Hita City, Sengan-en in Kagoshima, and Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama City, etc.
