The Wizard of Oz is a musical based on the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, with a book adapted by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jeremy Sams. The musical uses the Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg songs from the film and includes some new songs and additional music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and additional lyrics by Tim Rice.
After previews in the West End from 7 February, the musical opened on 1 March 2011, directed by Jeremy Sams, and closed on 2 September 2012. The original cast included Danielle Hope as Dorothy Gale, Michael Crawford as the Wizard and Hannah Waddingham as the Wicked Witch of the West. Sophie Evans played Dorothy on Tuesday evenings and took over the role full-time in February 2012. The role of Dorothy was cast through the 2010 reality television show Over the Rainbow, in which Hope won and Evans was the runner-up. After a similar Canadian reality TV search show, a Toronto production began in December 2012 and closed in August 2013, and was followed by a North American tour.
A lot of people need to realize that this is not wicked. I love wicked and the wizard of oz, but you just can't compare them to each other. Also, remember that elphie does not exist here. We have the wicked witch of the west. An actually evil woman. The sooner you realize that, the easier it will be to enjoy it!
This was an unbelievable experience for myself, daughter (age 7) wife and my mother. We were all blown away by this when we went to the paladium in April to see it. This is no way can be compared to wicked unless you just want to find reason to complain about nothing. These is a truly magical experience and took me back to my childhood watching wizard of oz on a saturday afternoon with the family. We also got photo of my daughter with Michael Crawford and Danielle Hope + Autographs :)
This show is amazing and I would certainly recommend it. As a child I always thought that no one could play the part of Dorothy other than Judly Garland, but believe me Danelle is totally amazing. Michael Crawford is brilliant as the Wizard.
I have seen this in London. ITS AMAZING
Michael's voice was amazing - bring me the broomstick was flipping amazing.
Tin Man Scarecrow and Lion were so funny.
Beautifully amazing production. Would see it again :) x
Michael Crawford still looks/is as amazing as he was 25 years ago. I love him and can't wait to see this show!
Saw The Wizard of Oz last Monday and it was just great!.....The stage sets are fantastic and the Tornado scene is very clever...........Danielle Hope as Dorothy was brilliant!
I'm playing the Wicked Witch in my hometown's production of this show this summer. (Well, actually, outskirts of town.) I'm so excited!
Been over two months since I saw it. How I wish to see it again x
I WAS JUST TOLD I GOT DOROTHY IN MY DRAMA SO I KEEP LOOKING AT THIS FOR INSPIRATION
Looks like a Great show
It looks incredible!
I actually cant wait to see it
Michael Crawford back on stage!!!!!!
Michael Crawford!!!! exactly where he should be on stage in an Andrew Lloyd Webber Musical!
I've seen this.. LOVED IT,
@GVirus14
She unclipped the top of her dress and it goes out into her skirt. You can see the blue underneath.
This looks amazing.
I hope this comes to Broadway soon.
Saw this on saturday it was brilliant!!
@GVirus14 i blieve dorothys blue dress belt has a band on it that they tear off which drops her dress and reveals the green part under it
@alexwardify It's a double dress so the skirt part of the green dress is folded up so the inside of it makes to top part of the blue dress and as she spins she pulls the blue top on the left shoulder so it falls down and the green dress is revealed. Very cleverly done
It´s such an amazing, jolly, lovely show and I had to smile during the whole show!!!
I really didn´t expect that this would be so fantastic, so when I saw the wizard of oz my first time, I had to see it again right away!!
Unfortunately I´m from Austria, so I have to wait to see it a third time:((
Oh My Gosh!!! It was amazing truly beautiful.
Please bring this to Broadway soon!
@GVirus14 I think theres the green dress under the blue part and theres a section that they pull when she spins and that why the guy has a green cloth. Idk if that how they do it or not though.
This is cool! I would see his!
It's official! I HAVE to see this show!!! :D
i cant stop replay it, i think i have abused the replay button!
Omg This is amazing. Wish i was in London to see this. Is there going to be a Cast Recording ?
@alexwardify she rips the top of the blue dress at the top and it folds down into the skirt part of the green dress, so the blue dress bit is double sided that's what it looks like when in slow motion anyway
Saw this on the first Saturday preview back in March and am going again on the 22nd :D Hoping Michael Crawford will be there this time because he was ill when I went last time.
could someone please just post all of miss gulch/ the wicked witch of the west's scenes on youtube i would like 2 know whats with the whole wand bursting into flames scene in munchkinland and if you tell me i still i want 2 see her scenes and her songs k
Would LOVE to see this! Too bad I live in NY!
YEY :D
Wow this looks AMAZING! Michael Crawford FTW! :D I hope this eventually comes to USA :(
Wicked and the wizard of oz are both amazing. I personally think that once you have seen wicked you really need to read the book. It makes it easier to understand both even though it is confusing
This is an amazing show!! I would love to see it.The only two dislikes of mine toward it are that they didnt keep "King of the forest" and "Jitterbug" in it. That way it would bring back the old wizard of oz feeling we all have. But other than that, this show made me LOVE Andrew Lloyd Webber!
At 1:18 the little girl is so cutee!
Goshdarnit, it looks amazing! My family and I were planning to go to celebrate the completion of my college course, but my mum can't afford it. I asked my boyfriend if he'd take me for a date, he can't afford it either! I was especially looking forward to seeing Michael Crawford. Looks like I might not have the chance now :(
The costumes are so different from the movie, but looks amazing
1
@GVirus14 she has a second dress OVER the first one; just a second before she does the twirl she grabs the other dress (that has a white outside) with her right hand a drops it in her twirl and voila: colour change :-)
@GVirus14 When she turns she rips off a bit of velcro on the top of the dress and a green skirt go over :D I think!
Could someone please help me and describe to me how to remake the "changing color" Dorothy dress. I can't figure out how to piece it together . Please and thank you :D feel free to message!!!!
@GVirus14 if u look closely at her right should u can see she pulls something and the green comes over the blue :)
IF I REMADE THE MOVIE IT WOULD BE 100% BASED ON THE BOOK!
I would love to know if this show will show in New York, and if it will, I'm am going to beg, and I mean B.E.G. BEG, my family to go on vacation there to see it!
Bring this to New York! I would be a perfect Scarecrow!
dorothy pulls her dress off of velcro and that changes it
@nowhereman136 No they didn't, haha. These productions are all custum built. They couldnt use the Les Miz one first because Les miz took it into storage and second cuz for this show they need it to move upwards, and needs coloured light pads under it to give it the yellow brick road/emerald city look. and it rotates faster too.
never thought i'd say this being 2nd commentor! tihs actually looks fantastic! now I can see why the tickets are so much money! cant wait to get to see it! x
I want to see it
Glinda is PINK not blue
first see the show and later WIKED hahaha for look all the story
They Should never have got rid of sister act.. for this!
@GVirus14 the dress has a tear off portion. watch closely, she tears off the top of it.
this show was phenomenal! i am not just saying this. the cast was faultless & the special effects. wow! i was definitely taken away to the merry old land of oz! it was magical!
wouldent it be so cool to see wicked then see this?!
@HardKnockLife11 also in the book glinda was a tiny role, the witch of the north was an old lady...NOT glinda
This makes me happy, but sad that I'm in California at UCLA and will probably not be able to see it for many more years..
looks far better than any other show i've seen. I WISH! I could see this! Gotta save up to get my ass to london! I'm going this sunday but the show isn't open is it?
I can't tell in the twister scene at 0:36 if Dorothy is insde her house or trying to open the front door to her house.
@bwilliam8709 Some people can't help comparing .... they have to be negative about one thing before they can be positive about anything else. Try to feel sorry for them - they are obviously too dense to appreciate more than one thing at a time.
it was
@Zipateer Wrong story, I think of Wicked as an Alternate Universe Story
@soylakekagalindo no "wicked" is very "the wizard of oz" this show is the original! its like saying a Journey copied Glee by singing dont stop believing!
im sorry but if i watched this with the sound of (or at least the beggining bit) i could've sworn i was watching wicked! :P Bt i think that i shall give this a chance and watch it but wicked will always and foremost be the most brilliant (to me) musical i have seen :))
it kinda looks like the whos from whoville in seussical turned green.
@MrPotatoPancakes it is called red shoes blues its brilliant check it up
"your crazy doing it this way i like the good witch but she was not glinda books glinda ruled in the north but this which ruled in the south and wicked witches where east and west read the book again and munchkins and i like that you brought back there national color if you did not own gold or sliver you where poor in Baum's time post civil war!"
so thats what they did with the rotating platform left over from Les Mis
Wait wait wait!! How did she do that!??! 1:40-1:45
How did they do that affect for Danielle's dress?
It looks cool and would like to see it but i must the the ending really annoys me when glindas all like 'you always had the power to go home.......i was trying to teach you a lesson...' ¬¬
Looks good but i think Wicked is SO much better!
how do they do the dress change a 1:43 !
please someone tell me !!
1:16 reminds me of chicago hahah :)
I like dorothy better with the blue gown
Hannah was on my family tonight! And i was flicking through the channels after and only watched BB cuz it was all to do with oz
OH GOD I HAVE BEEN THERE.
Best show here #fact
And the Good Witch of the North. My crush, bby
@bwilliam8709 here here
Ummm did anyone notice anything about the Lion's member? I was not sure and asked hubby to look too and umm wow yeah enough said!
lol when we whent the shoe dident work it was stuck
@STwilightPrincess just a dancer i think
@moviekid1 lol I agree
You should see the wizard of oz first.
I saw wicked on 13.10.10 and seeing this on 03.08.11 and watching the wicked witch I feel disgusted lol
ruby was a useless rock that no one cared about in Baum's time pluse Dorothy was 7 not 17.
you do all go on about things. all of these modern day musicals are nothing more than remakes of classics. judy garland immortalized dorothy and no matter how clever the remakes she will always be dorothy, don't bother analyzing everything in these new presentations, just enjoy them. celebrate the stuff. stop picking it to bits.
@SierraArielBoggess Haha, too bad I live in RUSSIA ;))
WHY ARE ALL THE GOOD MUSICALS SOO FAR AWAY FROM ME =(
This isnt wicked so stop comparing the shows
This is horrible... I love Andrew Lloyd Webber but ....ugh...
