I agree that Marie Kondo's book really stands out in a very (ironically) crowded field of decluttering books. Too many people, in simplifying her message actually missed a lot of the nuance found in her slim volume. It is worth a read for sure. That book kicked off my decluttering journey in a whole different way years ago and while I still feel like I can do more, I know that I wouldn't have come this far without having read her book.

    • @cactusbutterfly2939

I agree completely! Her method of gathering things from all over the house, like all the books, or all the clothes, and seeing the volume was "life changing" for me. It is easy to not realize how much of something you have until you see it all piled up! I know, Dana's method works for many, but for me, Marie Kondo's method is what I needed!

    • @catlady9123
      @catlady9123 Před 4 měsíci +13

On the other hand, for me her method doesn't work at all. ADHD attention span, all I'd see is a pile of say books out and then I'd get anxiety paralysis over trying to figure out what to do with them, then I'd get distracted by something else (like finding a book I want to re-read and forgetting about the pile) and all of a sudden that pile is still there 3 week later causing me more anxiety because it's "cluttered". I felt like a massive failure because everyone was saying it was THE WAY to declutter and I couldn't manage it.
Finding Cas, which led to me finding Dawn and Diane is what finally got me to figure out a method that works for me (combined with some advice from Mack from Magic Cleaning) and I finally got 17 trash bags of garbage (broken stuff, missing pieces, etc, stuff that no one would want) and 4 full sized SUV's full of donations out the door in a 2 week period.

Concerning food storage, I "have to" decan things because of insects (moth...) and I use well sealed glass jars. Best system I found through practice is to have at least two jars of every item, so I use one, the other(s) is waiting (in the pantry). When I finish the fist one, I can fill it with fresh food after next grocery shopping and because of the second container I never run out of that item.

Yes you need two bins. I got cupboard beetles when I lived in Singapore. They came in on a bag of wild rice. They got inside everything, including spice jars. So it all went in airtight containers. My mother in law got cupboard moths. There was just one bag of flour that she hadn’t stored in a bin and they set up a family in it. She doesn’t bake now so the flour was left for a year. It’s impressive just how quickly insects can destroy a whole kitchen of produce.

Then, it’s so simple for their clothes to be put right into their bin to carry back to their room to put away 🤯 Thank you for all your tips, Dawn!!

Marie Kondo got me going when I tried her method on my clothes. I think the main best idea was to take everything out first. That made a difference to me. But some of her ideas are not true for different homes. for example, I save some things, kitchen pans, dishes, and other stuff because I think one of my grandchildren who are starting college might need them. Marie would say that other people will never want them, but guess what, they do! Grandkids come and pick through my cool "junk" and they actually need some of these kinds of things. I am so glad I can just gift them those things, including bedding, etc. I have 39 grandkids, so most of them come from big families who need all the support they can get as they start off to college. I'm so glad I can help. I love you Dawn. One of my sons lives with his family in Burnsville, MN. The stuff they want is vintage collector items that we actually still use as decor or our paintings… anything they can sell not use. My hubby wants me to sell everything and get what I can but it takes so long on Marketplace… they haggle and ask you to meet them halfway etc. Pain in the butt!!! I have 4 Pyrex Bowls still sitting at the door 1 week after purchaser paid $50 by transfer so my house looks like it’s dragging because of this… next time I’ll just donate it. I’ve spent 30 minutes at least texting back and forth so way too much time wasted… plus hurrying home to have them cancel coming to get it and now 2 days later it’s still here. I just got rid if containers for food as I won’t use them. The flours get forgotten as the sugars etc. We don’t use rice or pasta much anymore so open bags in one large container and new ones in another. I use to do that though. I appreciate hearing the reasons why certain containers work well for you. we all have our own unique space and style so hearing that you like it because it has handles or it fits a load of laundry or the slim shape fits in an awkward cabinet. I don't have a container store near me (probably a good thing). i like hearing the why so when I am out and about at target or Wal-Mart or wherever I can make good decisions on what is available. My gosh, square containers make so much more sense than round. Remember the round Tupperware canister sets? I had the blue ones. 😏
Thanks for sharing. I love to organize. Me in my happy place🤗

My heart is so happy with the organization! I LOVE this type of stuff…. a happy cricket 😁 I also found some fabric covered fiberboard boxes (file box size) that come in sets on Amazon. I love them and they fit perfectly on my bookshelf. I use mine for memory boxes, stationary, gifts and wrap, etc. For a time I also used them for clothes since I don’t use a dresser. Now I’ve minimized my closet so far, my closet now fits a hanging organizer that I added bins in the slots for the underwear, socks, and folded jeans, etc.

Used painters tape to attach to one short end of each box. Now when I add an item to a box, I just reprint the sheet of paper and insert it in the sheet protected.

Go Dawn! Such a great video. I'm a bit of an organizational freak. I love those Walmart Cereal Bins.
If I'm not mistaken, The Container Store's multi-purpose bins actually come in 4 different sizes - Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. I have them all over my house and even in the extra freezer. They are fantastic and I find that they are a pretty good value.
Another thing the Container Store sells are their big white Sterilite totes that I found were a lot less expensive than even Walmart. I got a set of 8 of them for our storage room for an excellent price.
Their free membership perks often gives me an extra 25% off my purchase as well. So, not all their items are over-priced, and for the durability and versatility a lot of their items are really well priced for what you get. Once upon a time, I spent a lot at the Dollar Store on all their colorful bins and ended up throwing out a lot of them because they were so flimsy!

I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying your videos. I had to come to my computer (yes, computer!) to comment bc I'm watching them on my tv. I'm plodding through clearing out stuff, selling some and donating items. You're right; we assign more value to our own items! I have little cupboard space in my kitchen, so I like your idea of putting lids in one container that I can just pull out. You have me looking at new ways to store items, after determining what do I really need to keep. We're FAR from clearing a lot out yet, but I'll get there. My husband wants to store a LOT of toys for the visiting grandkids (five kids ranging 3 months - 6 years) and there is a lot that they never choose to play with. He's adamant that he wants THEM to decide what I pass on. But he wants me to wait until the infant is older. Oh well. I'll keep working on other areas.
And p.s. your natural hair color is just stunning. (from a conversation on an earlier video that I never commented on...) Be well!

JUST organized out new homeschool/den room with several of the multipurpose bins from Walmart! I had a different plan, but it’s so much easier to be able to have things(workbooks, etc) upright where you can actually see them and pull them out easily!
And I have several of the y-weave large totes, too. Nice, clean look and great for storing larger things, like perfect size for toddler laundry. The big kids share one smaller laundry basket per room…so *usually* it’s only 2 kids’ clothes in those loads which makes it a bit easier for sorting and putting away!
