My grandparents handmade a dollhouse for me when I was a child. I will never get rid of it. Especially now that my grandmother is deceased and my grandfather no longer remembers me. It’s super special things that like that deserve to take up space.

I saved many well loved, but still in good shape, toys from my childhood. ( Fisher price castle and the house with all the little people and my original premie cabbage patch doll !!) Last weekend I watched in total joy as my grandson had the best time playing with my old toys. You do not need to get rid of everything.

As a person with chronic illness, it's difficult to keep up with decluttering and organization. I spent two years with barely enough energy to take care of myself, much less my home. I have a wonderful husband who does his best, but the organization part, especially of the things you don't see out in the open, are just not as important to him as they are to me.
I started feeling a little better than usual in Nov 2023 and decided I would start slowly working on decluttering and organizing. Slowly but surely, working in small 20 min increments, I have managed to go through my entire house and build up my stamina a little! I've been watching your videos for a few years now and put to use a lot that I've learned from you! I thank you for your inspiration and wonderful, thrifty ideas. I hope that you also know that you are enough!

The mess and clutter drives me nuts but I’m doing the best I can. I pray that one day I can have more stamina like you. Thank you for sharing your story. God bless you.

I literally could have written the same comment. With my husband in charge, just keeping us in clean clothes and fed, plus his job anything else just has to wait. I take medication to suppress my immune system, so I don't go out unless it's really important. And he runs all the errands, including the pick up items I order online. First of all, I am THRILLED to hear you are doing better. I cannot begin to tell you how much I understand this.
I have actually had a good March ( I don't know why, but I'll take it.) Any energy I have has been to tackle all the organization/clutter issues, like you. It is so nice to have some clean, organized spaces in my house now.
And like you, these videos give my hope and often some energy I didn't know was there!!!

I now have grandchildren and even 3 great-grandchildren. Even my boys loved playing with tea sets, doll houses, playing dress up when they were little. 1 girl, 3 boys and they all played with everything! She played with guns , cars & trucks, the boys loved playing house on rainy or wintry days. I have saved the favorite toys from my son and daughter and the grands, and now great grands are enjoying too. Mimi (me) always has things that they don't have at home and i get to make new memories with new kiddos playing with older things. Funny story...when the grands were 4 & 5 Iwouldn't bring out the china tea set. My only granddaughter spent some money on a 6 piece plastic Bee Time tea set at Dollar Tree...a very small teapot, smaller 'honey pot' 2 plates and 2 thimble sized cups. One weekend brought her 5 and her 2 boy cousins, 5 & 4, to stay. Not enough pieces to go around and it was near 3 yr old BD .... he cried to play so we went to Target, bought a new, way bigger plastic tea set for him. We ate with that tea set for years! Everything was big enough for cereal, snacks, sandwiches....great investment!!!

Okay, I'm Mexican American and my grandma (may she RIP) would come back to haunt me if she knew I threw out old towels. Lol When they got too old to use to dry our bodies, they got turned into rags to dust. And throwing something that could be bought again under $20, would be a smack upside the head. I can hear her now (in spanish)..."we're not rich! Why would we buy another if we already have a good one?!" 🤭
I'm doomed. Just gonna close the closet door and clean something else. 😅

Yeah, I've got some 30-year-old towels. Granted, they've been downgraded to dog-drying towels, but I'm not tossing them just because they're old.
On the other hand, keeping everything just in case is why I have organizational issues...🤔

Thank you, Katheryn, for being wise enough to know the value of sentimental items. As we age our memories fade and having things from our past bring those wonderful memories back and give us joy. Extra space can't do that. In fact, it does the opposite.

When you declutter the things that don’t matter, it creates space for the special, important things like your Kirsten doll. ❤ I like Joshua Becks suggestion on decluttering sentimental things last. I made the mistake of decluttering some special rabbit trophies. Later I did another decluttering sweep and realized I could have kept them after throwing tons of paper that was meaningless.

My 2 dogs who used it have passed and every time I see it, I think of them. They were my first dogs as an adult and my kids. I have been struggling with the fact that I should get rid of it because it takes up so much room and is getting no use but I just can't do it. I see them in it every time I look at it. I cleaned out my parent’s house 9 years ago during a Marie Kondo-era. BOY do I regret giving up some of their things. Almost a decade later and I wish I had certain things. You’re young. Trust me, 20 minutes is NOT ENOUGH time to decide if you’re going to get rid of something with deep associations or fond memories. Give yourself 6-12 months, an entire cycle of holidays, etc. before getting rid of things from your childhood or your family. Once gone, you can’t get them back.

The wood over wire shelves look nice however they add unnecessary weight... Those shelves aren't meant to hold a lot. Once you add on your items the weight adds up fast. Another option, although may not last as long depending how rough you are, is shelf liner covered foam board. Works great in most situations.

All amazing ideas. My 'Nostalgic' rule for myself is this, if it is being kept in a box, on a shelf, stored away then the item is not getting the love & respect it deserves. Use it, display it, pass it on to family/friends or it needs to go. I take a picture of the things that I pass on and I can then reflect on them & draw back my memories anytime I have the need. It is also a great teaching moment for our kids & grandkids so they start out with this practise. Just a thought.

Yep, teach the grandkids that space is more important than heart. That'll work out well. I still have toys from when I was a newborn. I'm glad no one told me to give them up because of what They wanted.

Whenever i have things inherited from passed on loved ones, i take pictures of it and, if I've had it a long time, i just imagine if my family member were here, would they want me to keep this item and stress over the space it takes up, or would they be ok with me giving it away and someone else loving it and breathing new life into it? I then decide if the picture is enough for me and decide from there. It has helped me declutter so much

Thank you for the inspiration, Kathryn! I love the hack with covering wired racks, too! I can't understand who thought they were a good idea, from storage closets to regular closets... Eeeek! Regarding the fitted sheets... It's a great idea for some bc folding them can be a pain, but I don't like wrinkled sheets on my bed and ironing them would be an extra chore for me, so I'd have to fold mine!😂 I needed this video bc I have a pile of things in my spare bedroom that you've pushed me to take care of right now! "Rule of 20!" TFS!❤

My husband and I live in a small, very open space with very little storage. It works well for my husband who is wired so that he has to be able to see an object in order for him to remember it exists. All his stuff is on display because there is very little closed storage.
For me, I get very uncomfortable. I feel like everything is cluttered.
I got a wire shelf rack and added wheels so it can be pushed wherever. He can see through the shelves, so things are visible to him. Baskets or clear storage boxes make things visible but contained. If company is coming decorative flat sheets, or a shower curtain, can be hung on the rack to make it feel less "in your face, in my space."
I would love more tips for how to store things "in the open" that do not add to a cluttered look/feeling.

11:03 I'm a childhood cancer survivor. I went in every other week for 6 months for chemotherapy, and it always made me very sick. My parents bought me Fisher Price "Precious Places" sets when a treatment hit me particularly rough. I still have them now in my 30's, and I will never get rid of them, even if we have to cram ourselves into a tiny apartment.
Not only is the nostalgia associated with them strong, but I distinctly remember how much fun I had playing with them. The figures had little magnets in their feet, and each set came with a magnet "key" that you could insert under the floors to make them scoot around without touching them. I thought that was so cool as a kid (still do, actually - haven't seen anything comparable in recent toys). And they were so pretty: they had kind of a Victorian/Edwardian aesthetic, and everything was in pastel colors.
I kinda want to go get them out of storage now...

I'm a boy Mom too. I think you should keep your childhood toys in case one of your boys has a daughter one day. I would've loved to have something my grandmother played with and cherished, and giving them to a grand daughter you'll still get to see them! These are classic toys that should be around and still played with in 25+ years or so.

We just decluttered our attic after 20 years in our home, it was so amazing. My husband and I did it 15-30 min a day for about 3 weeks and our son took home over 20 boxes of his stuff to go thru. It was a fun trip down memory lane for all of us and feels so good to have it done. Love your ideas as always, thank you for sharing!

I love the idea about deciding on the small items - if you can replace for $20 or less easily then donate it to someone whom can use it now!
Organizing and labeling is the key I found - I organized my husband's rolling tool chest a couple of years ago and collect tools from all over the garage and house. I then labeled each drawer (I found 5 hammers! LOL) I am happy to say that most of the tools land back in their drawer or close to the tool chest. Now the rest of the house! You are always an inspiration! Thank you!

I’m so glad you kept your playmobil house and your American doll and her things. My one granddaughter found my Bonnie Bride doll and it’s been fun getting outfits for her on Etsy from some wonderful sewers (I don’t sew, I’ve tried 😝) for her to play with when she visits. My daughters are happy to have their doll houses for their daughters and sometimes their sons, to now play with. We still have the Fisher Price sets and the grandchildren enjoy them. Before that our nieces and nephews played with them at our house when my children outgrew them. Maybe some day you will have a granddaughter to play with your toys. 💕

And then I moved into my parents home and found out that they still had boxes of belongings from their parents….It’s been hard to get rid of things. Thank you for posting this. I’ve had friends and family members say - just throw it away, donate, etc… it’s been hard. I’m trying. Fun vlog!.
"Super old! 7yrs old"!!!... that isn't old.. some of my stuff is 20+yrs old and still perfectly useful and still in use.😅
I don't understand cluttering a bedroom with an open, dust collecting, clothes wrack?.. it is visual clutter. Just declutter your main waredrobe. Then you can keep all you clothes in there, including the ones you want to wear the next day/week. Prep on Sunday for the week. Hang all on one side or Add colour clothespeg to hanger to make it easier to see what you chose to wear for the week.
Those wire shelves seem to only exist in the USA... never seen them anywhere else I've been.
Nope. I have some things I love from childhood in my memory box in the attic. I have space, so not an issue. But i will do another sweep through and declutter in the attic this weekend when I get down the Easter decor. I do a sweep each season.

I think you showing the things you were keeping from childhood is very important. I think while it's important to get rid of excess, it's just as important to hold onto the things you value. We're not robots and we shouldn't sterilize our lives. We can absolutely run the danger of detaching too much. I believe that the same people who get rid of everything from their past are the same people who also don't have strong familial attachments, are spiraling, and adding to the loneliness epidemic. There needs to be a balance between too much and too little in order to enjoy life to the fullest, and that balance looks different for everyone
