    Man - I've been struggling with rim lighting techniques, channel pulls, etc. They were really frustrating. I think you need just the right image. This technique is perfect for any image, its so flexible. and the blur trick - genius. thanks so much!!

      Good suggestion. Essentially what you're talkibt about is motivated lighting - following the direction of light and shadows in your scene and matching them in your subject accordingly. Best approach is to plan things out in advance so you can match light direction in photography with the material you're blending with, but if that's not possible then it's a case of adding fake lighting on subjects, and this technique is certainly one that will help with that. The part of this video where I sample the light colors is also a good example of matching the light sources to the environment

    Thanks for the great tutorial. The field blur tool is new to me. Thanks for the inspiration. I'm using Affinity Photo, but found out where the blend if modes are located there too. Slightly different. I have to do some more exploration.
