- A detailed description of the Boss PS-6 Harmonist pedal, new for 2010. Includes a few side-by-side comparisons with its predecessor, the PS-5 Super Shifter.
This video contains a lot of information and was a monster to edit, but I hope it helps.
Before anyone comments on it, my rather liberal use of the phrase "digital warble" is intentional. Look up "warble" in the dictionary and you'll see that it describes exactly the kind of unstable nature of pitch shifting effects.
I got drunk last night and ordered this pedal. Must have been the Scorpions I was listening to. I regret nothing after watching this video.
That's hilarious. Scorpions were my first concert as a kid, and though I don't remember it much, I will say that the song Zoo was probably one of the biggest inspirations for me ever picking up a guitar
Daniel Chapman Lol
Daniel Chapman it’s been two years , is this pedal still in your roster or has it been moved aside ? Do you still stand by the purchase ? Great story btw I lol’d
Yeah Boy Get It I Wanna Get One
Still have it?
It's 2023 and I just got value from this video. Thank you, Nick.
Sweet! Glad to know this channel is still helping folks since I stopped making videos a long time ago.
It is 2024 and I still got use out of this video XD. Cheers Nick!
one of the best youtube tutorials I've seen. Pro quality. You need to send it to Boss Corp and ask for a job doing nothing but youtube tutorials for their effects. I bet most of those 157k hits would agree. Straight to the task and completed. No dicking with music, the camera and almost no unnecessary talking(only facts belong in the quality of this tutorial, no opinions)
Thanks for the compliment. It took a while to learn how to edit my own dumb phrases out.
No video for the RC-3. Haven't been doing videos for a while. I went back to school and am balancing that with work. Very little time these days for new video endeavors.
Dude, your selling yourself short. All the demo riffs you played were crisp, clean, in tune, and on tempo. Sounds pretty fucking good to me!
I had a head injury and suffered alot of memory loss. I actually forgot almost 30 years of guitar playing experience and lost my technique, style, everything. Before I got hurt I sat in on alot of local bands recording and had alot of playing experience with different bands in the 80's. I could go from Poison to Morbid Angel and I had my own style of metal blues. It's taken me the past couple of years to get to where I remember almost 90% of what I knew. This video brought back a bunch of memories. By the mid 90's I had mapped out my own pedal chain based on all the pedals I had tried out in Guitar Centers. The Harmonist pedal was one of them I wanted most. I have some of my gear left and after I watched this video I went out to my garage and rebuilt my pedal chain in the same order and ran it into the half stack I've had for over 30 years and plugged in my new Strat and dialed my pedals in. Damn good to be able to remember all this. Until now I've been playing unplugged and through a modeling amp. Thank you for the video. You helped me with alot more than your demo.
Wow! That's incredible! Thank you for sharing your story. Cheers.
I feel you man. I too had a motorcycle accident that made me lose many years of playing ability (20 years in my case) Not just head trauma, but also severe forearm and shoulder damage. It's a long journey back, but never give up on it
I love it when you find EXACTLY the right youtube vid that you want ...on the first try. Great demo dude!! And that little closing jam thingy at 7:50 is just plain cool.
Great Demo, Boss, owes you money.
I'm already signed up on Google AdSense, but more money is always great!
Great demo, you took a relatively complex pedal and made it simpler and explained functionality well👍🏼 you’re good at this, thanks dude.
Thank you. I'm out of the pedal demo game now, but comments like this still make me feel proud.
Great demo dude! And you're playing is totally fine.
I don't have a video for the PS-3, and have been really quiet on making any new videos these past couple of years. I simply stopped buying guitar gear (I now have what I consider my dream rig) and have been nerding out in the cycling world. I'm also returning to school. No promises on making any new videos. Thanks for the support, though.
doing research for the band I'm leading for show, I appreciate this video allot.
Thanks Sxip! I did too!
I would never have thought you were a "bad" player bro. haha Good video. Thanks!
Gotta use them on stereo, speperates it like two guitars panned hard left and hard right. Sounds so good
Thanks for great detail and comparison, seriously considering purchasing one myself. This is the first of your Demo's I have watched. I will definitely watch all the rest.
Thank you. It made more sense to simply run through the same scale multiple times to show off the pedal's chops.
Great formatting on the video. I always wondered what exactly the PS-6 could do, and this video makes it very clear.
Nic - you did a great job with the Demo , I can't believe somene would be upset over the pronunciation of the pedal
Thanks man. Cheers.
Thanks, man. I promise I won't be so self-deprecating when (or rather, if) I make videos again.
Terrific vid. Thanks so much. The one thing I didn't really hear was your take on the PS-6's octave up setting compared to the PS-5's octave up (in harmony mode, which I loved).
Nicholas, This was very helpful. Thank you for making this video. I was looking for a PS5 and did not know the PS6 replaced it.
One of the BEST presentations on youtube..........MORE!!!!!
dude this is by far the best demo ever about the PS-6 haha thanx a lot (Y)
@addy121
One of the better compliments I've received. Thank you. I'm actually very comfortable with my current skill level (playing for 11 years). I've recorded and played shows; it's just the "turn on the camera and go" thing I'm self-conscious about. I'm not interested in the "Ultimate Guitarmageddon Video Showdown" that's always going on.
Great demo. Very informative and straight forward.
Your playing is good man, this demo was awesome thank you
Cool. A very well organized demo. Your commentary on what you felt was useful/unnecessary, etc. was honest and straight forth. Thank you.
Excellent video Nicholas, thanks for posting, much appreciated. You are very talented!
dude thanks for the review, you made the choice between these two a lot easier for me! cheers
I love your no nonsense review, excellent demo, your playing is fine man. 😎 [ I immediately liked and subscribed]
Thank you so much for sharing with us, and the excellent reviews you do. Honest, intelligent reviews as always, keep up the good work!
This is a great video, man. Thanks so much for your work. Subscribed!
Very nice video. Straightforward, answers most questions. Thanks for posting
Thanks for posting this! I've been having a hard time deciding which phase shifter to purchased. PS-6 will probably work for me. :-)
such a great video
$125 @ Guitar Center. Thx for the great demonstration!
Great work here man, very educational.
well made and narrative, very easy on the mind to watch, clarifies a lot, well done, H6UK
No need to excuse your playing. You did a GREAT demo and it is unnecessary to show off any skills to do so. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing your insight man. Don't be down on your playing, you sound great. Have fun with it :)
Great tutorial I actually understood it, and the speed was perfect.
Amazing demo, Nick; completely informative! Thank you!
Great thanks, helped my shopping list a lot, had a few pedals in my sights but gonna go with either of the Boss pedals now x
The Fryette head is the Pittbull 100CL. 100-watt EL34 quad set, switchable down to 50 watts. Two channels each with multiple gain-stacking modes, and a graphic EQ. The Orange cab is just a regular PPC412, not the HP version. Amazing sound.
The fact that your putting yourself out there on CZcams for all to hear is something that many, including myself, find difficult. I once tried to demo a new pedal and was CRUSHED by the comments. No bullshit, I was thinking "man, do I sound that bad?" And the truth of the matter was no, I was just fine. There are thousands of trolls just waiting to pounce on you. Now, I just disable the comments and lay it out there for all to see. Like it or not, I don't care!
This is awesome. We just kicked out our other guitar player and all he really did was harmony parts over the riffs. really added to our music. Ive been looking around and i think one or two of these might just be what i need. hahaha great review man! really helpful and insightful.
He choose his girlfriend who is underage and jobless over band......lol no.
great demo.ive always wanted to try one of these pedals.this was highly informative.thanks for sharing
Great demo brother! Nicely maps out the various features and sounds. :)
Best demo...made lots of sense and was very useful...thanks!
I just found out that my old PS5 (along with a ton of other old pedals) were stolen and I was soooo bummed because I knew they didn’t make it anymore! But now I guess I can get a 6 since it does seem nicer.. have to start saving for that now!
That sucks.
This was incredibly helpful for me. thank you!
good demo. Thanks. This cleared up a lot of questions
Thanks for a cool review man! Enlightening and relevant
You play fine dude. Good demo and I dig the pedal. I bought boss octave pedal instead, but perhaps there's room for this at some stage.
I have both the Octave and Harmonist Boss pedals. They are great together!
Dude. You say you're not good at guitar.
You're just fine. And it just makes you better that you're not pretentious and you're modest.
Fantastic review! Very informative and to the point, thank you.
You get straight to the point! Loved it!
Thank you for making the video....I appreciate it very much !!!
Great review! Thanks!
The best way too find great original sounds as a musician is too experiment. Never be afraid to experiment! :)
Wow the knob moves by itself like magic! 😮😮😮
It's a miracle of modern video editing technology!
I know it's been many years since you made this video, but I would have loved to see the Super Shifter handle, say, runs in Cm using the 3rds setting, then the Harmonist doing the same key/interval. A few A/B comparisons like that would be really helpful.
IMO, harmonisation in-key is the reason these pedals exist, and the other features are just gimmicks (some useful, some not) to make them seem worth the expense.
Your best bet at this point is to run to your local GC, see if both are available, and do a shoot-out. I don't keep either of these pedals on my board anymore. I still have a PS-3 Pitch Shifter/Delay which I only use on octave-up or octave-down settings. Thanks for checking out my [old] video.
Remarkably good demo. Thanks
That was a pretty sweet top-floor studio apartment I had in Tempe, Arizona. Now I'm in Seattle and pay over $100 a month more for a room that's about a quarter of the size of the old place. Not gonna lie, it's a major reason why I haven't been posting more videos lately. Bum deal, but I'm happy in the doom and gloom of the Northwest.
This was a big help. Thanks.
Thanks for the informative vid sir.....getting one of these shortly.
Nice demo. Very informative.
Freaking sweet idea!! Love your thinking!
excellent demo, showed all i wanted to know. still im keeping my ps-5, though
Very helpful video. Thanks a lot.
Extremely thorough, yet concise, helpful demo :) Huge thanks & much Respect ~*
Hey Nick - which one has a Better De-Tune? I am going for that Landau / 80's Rack Chorus Tone. I already have the FTT Tri Avatar Chorus, Boss DD-500 and the Strymon Big Sky. Thanks for any input.
I no longer have either of these of these pedals, but I do remember using the PS-5's detune a lot when I had it. Sounds like you've already got plenty of tools to replicate something very close to what you're going for, though!
@@NicholasGreenwood Thanks. I programmed a Heavily Modulated Shimmer/Reverb ( to go with my F.T.T. Tri Chorus and DD-500) - but it won't be Complete without The Detune. I gotta find a Pedal that can Replicate the SPX90 " Pitch Change C "
great demo of each setting. :-)
Really great, thank you so much.
Superb demo
Thanks for the info! How about overall tracking? Are they comparable or is one clearly better than the other?
Melhor review que ja vi !!!
great demo man
nice job, clear and concise thanks a lot
Nice demo thank you
Ps5 was a tone killer for sure.
great video, not sure if the answer to my question is somewhere in the comments but, what model Fryette head is that? also, is that Orange cab the 4x12HP?
Great video presentation!! Thank you! BTW, do both pedals handle polyphony shifting with ease just as the micro pog? i think i've seen a PS-6 vid actually doing better than micro pog...
Also, i'm building a flight case pedal board, what's your advise, shall i have a very thick foam pressing against the pedals, on the lid part? Thanks again!
Fantastic video. Although in the video, it says 12 = octave and 24 = 2nd octave. Technically, it's 8 = octave and 15 = 2nd octave.
I have both pedals too. Thanks for explaining things out. I haven't realized all the differences. :)
What's your opinion on Digitech's Harmony Man?
I think alot of 'great guitar players' on youtube are usually ones who don't seem to have any videos of their great guitar playing, I thought your playing was good. I almost bought this pedal last week but went for a 'Mooer Super Bender' instead, I like the boss one though, it'd be easier to get the timing of your bends better, but the Super Bender is pretty much a $140 Whammy, it's well worth checking out.
I have the boss pS-5 in 3 of my main board and I love it!!!!! I’ll get soon boss ps-6
Yo man, you're not "not a great player". You make really clear and informative demo videos, probably the best, that have been really useful to me and many others. No one's judging your playing man.
And if they are... FUCK them.
quick question,
1) if i have a tube screamer as an amp boost, do u put this before ts or after? Or do u place it in the fx loop?
2) if I bypass this pedal, but with output A to amp A, output B to amp B, will this pedal act as a signal splitter?
thx mann, really straight forward video.
crazy pedal! nice video
Great video Nick - thank you! Has Boss fixed the "warble" when going 1 octave up on the PS-6? It has been 10 years since your video, so I am hoping so ... If not, I am grabbling a PS-6 AND a PS-5 because the latter's 1 octave up sound is absolutely killer!!!
Thank you for the comment. I no longer own either of these pedals, sorry. But I don't think Boss has changed anything on the PS-6. Try them both and see what works best for your rig!
Yeah, I see Giamatti. Or my buddy Rylee. You look a LOT like Rylee. good vid man, thanks!
@hallobaaaby
Keep in mind that the POG only does octaves; it can't shift at all in any other kind of interval. The PS-5 isn't capable of polyphony. I guess the PS-6 is a winner!
Foam inside the lid of your pedalboard definitely helps. I've also seen guitarists use pillows stuffed inside of a suitcase for a cheap setup. When I was living in Arizona, I used the strongest epoxy I could because the desert heat was melting the velcro adhesive--I no longer need anything to hold them in place.
OMG im already picturing myself covering tarkus on guitar hahaha
Sounds like Thin Lizzy, damn!
My question is this: If i am playing a riff or lick that has major and minor 3rds harmonized within it, that are not all diatonic in key, is there a harmonizer pedal i can dial in to catch that? So basically, if i hear a minor 3rd instead of a diatonic major 3rd on a certain note, but i have other diatonic 3rds as well in the lick, can a harmonizer be dialed in to memorize that? Kinda a tricky question, but a common one i would assume.
@keebaeklim
Hmm... Does your amp have an effects loop? Put it in the loop and your amp's disortion will be "in front" of the pedal. That's how the pedals are wired in this video.
this is a great video
@GibsonGuitarsForLife You just find the correspondant scale and set the key to fit it. If you want two different harmonies in a single solo, you should get two harmonizers, or one which can change the scale by pressing it (I think the DigiTech double big red pedal can do that)
Cool video. Thanks.
The PS-6 does one-octave-up shifting in harmonist mode. I don't think it sounds as clean as the PS-5, but the trade-off is that the PS-6 does a better one-octave-down shift.
