Had a Helix, Strymon Iridium and then a Fractal FM3. Liked the FM3 the most. I don't care about a billion amp models.. I want really one great sounding (and feeling) "Marshall" amp so to speak. I also have the IR-X. I spent a LOT of time, I mean a LOT going through all the amp models, deep diving into amp tweaking, tons of IRs, etc.. I got the FM3 sounding fantastic direct into PC and studio monitors as well as live direct use. I have two Friedman amps, Dirty Shirley 40 and JJ Junior and have owned a lot of nice amps, Soldanos, Mesas, big rack systems back in the 90s, etc.. I got the IR-X when it first came out and immediately was super satisfied with it. I went with some aftermarkets IRs eventually. I built a board for live use, IR-X, rev/delay, etc.. I much prefer it for live and use it either direct or into the FX return of an amp and super happy with my sounds. Also, I have no menus, everything is super easy to tweak as needed. The FM3 is my audio interface and I use it every day and no longer mess with the tones I get, very content with it but definitely like the IR-X better for live use. Occasionally I will run the IR-X into the FM3 direct and use it for stereo IRs, delay/verb,. etc (basically just disable the amp block in my preset) Both are great tools.
Great job! Great demo and playing!
Super insightful and helpful. Thank you!
I have both and the IR-X made my HX Stomp sound like an AM radio. Now I'm putting the Friedman in the loop on the Stomp and using midi to control it. All the effects of the HX and all the amazing tone of the IRX. Perfect match!
Excellent. Glad to hear notes and not just chug chords -
👍👍39 Vraiment top le son , bravo l'ami ... 👍👍🎶🎶😊😊🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Well done
Helix doesn't sound bad but I much prefer the tone of the Friedman. I have one and the feel is noticeably better IMO. BTW, great guitar!
Excellent job, a systematic comparison for this very specific tone segment. The Helix is a Swiss Army knife on steroids that offers endless tweeks options whereas the IR-X is a specific tool for a specific job. I hope that the future of high-end modellers will re-align their design philosophy to be less of "Endless dialing capability" and more towards "Higher quality" tones from the start. Friedman understands this...Quality versus Quantity is a better choice as many of us have drifted from making music more towards gear tweeking.
Классный звук у тебя, молодец!
Hey man I have both the Friedman and a Helix LT how did you manage to connect both of them? I’ve been struggling to find a way to get both hooked up
Gotta turn off the fat and c45 on the helix. Those are not standard on the BE, those are options on the BE100 not on the ir-x.
Wow I wasn't expecting B to be helix, which I like better(in some subjective sense). Helix let's you add seemless drives, boosts, comp, eq. Once you add that love, those amps come to life. Realistic character.
I know helix real well and i own a 6505 head.
What ill say is, helix is just as good as any solidstate thing out there.
Those nano tubes are pretty dope
Add some low gain in the parametric eq then compare
It's an exciting time to be a guitar player, in terms of tone at least.
Will you be trying the Boss IR-2...?
Also, I think it's only a matter of time before they start putting tubes in the Fractal stuff. (which will make them even more unaffordable...)
I'd like to try the IR-2 for sure. What I like about this unit are the tubes, and the fact that it's a real amp's preamp section.
The Friedman sounded thicker, like it has more mids, and is more forward/present. I've noticed something similar between Fractal and Helix. I like the thicker sound. I've had better results on my HX Stomp by turning down the "guitar tone knob" on my bridge humbucker guitar pickup from 10 to about 7 or 8. YMMV
great video! I hope, this is not a sponsored (bought) one but a honest one?
Thanks! It's not sponsored, I bought the IR-X myself. I'm sure happy with it too, but I also use the Helix a lot without the IR-X for a lot of tones.
@@ClintCurtis
Thanks for the clarification! I hoped so because the IR-X sounds just so much more natural in your video. Especially in the mid-range wich is always "honky" in the HX! I went from Helix to Tonex and now, I consider to get a IR-X, as well because, I don´t need millions of tone but one or two basic sounds with a litte extras here and there. AND I´m bored of the menu-diving ;)
Also: great playing! No useless chuggin´ nor insane shredding but tasteful rock-playing!
If I’m running this in 4cm with a modeling unit, in this case my Helix Floor, should I run to the mixer from the IRX or Floor?
Out from the Helix
@@ClintCurtis thank you
i started to make a 4cm and found the helix placater dirty and ir-x channel 2 sounded exactly the same, for me, but i didn't get as far as what he did in the video around 9:20... may keep the ir-x after all. 🤔
@@redkurn it was nice but I sent it back. The Helix is fine and I also have a Splawn and Mark V so decided to stop being greedy
I think you should use the same IRs, tweak it with flat studio headphones, spend minimal time on the eq. I am able to copy neural amp modeler Friedman model, but I actually had to listen very close, take a break, do it a bit more… until both are the same. That may involve compression before/ after the amp.
Wouldn’t you use the Friedman IRX in 4cm instead of in the loop if you were going to use it exclusively?
I am using it in 4 cable method with the Helix through midi and it’s great.
@@ClintCurtis ok that’s my plan when it arrives Monday. Great video thank you.
It’s rare when a video is exactly what you’re looking for and the tones are so noticeable
Ok....i know both the BE and Helix well....every time my bunch have trued this type of comparison....wuth boost, compression, delay n reverb we always got Helix to sound much better than the actual amp.....that organic under the fingers thing is still there wirh rhe amp.... difference is soo snall though most could never tell 👍🏻
The Ubuntu Studio computer operating system may be of interest to you as it's designed for creativity.
I'm not a guitar player but to my ears, Helix makes those pickups sound like P-90's whereas Friedman makes them sound like PAFs. I like my P-90's to BITE
The IR-X sounds like an amp, the Helix sounds digital
have both, had them dialed exactly the same... surprise they sounded exactly alike and i couldn't tell the difference. multiple times had to switch the ir-x to clean just to be sure. only channel that sounds different is channel 1 on the ir-x and not enough for me to keep it, which i really want to do just because. oh and the channel volume on helix had to be set to 8.0 to match the ir-x. i didn't get as far as what he did in the video around 9:20... may keep the ir-x after all. 🤔
Friedman way better, it sounds like a real amp, Helix is more digital
helix sounds good, friedman goes to 11
So close. Helix for me!
Umh... less master (around 2) on the Helix will get you a lot closer - it'll open up. And turn off Fat and C45.
I have both...As always, Helix sounds thin...weak... Freidman wins!
Bump the bass up/ tweak it. They sound very different from here. There is no reason why helix would sound different. Using different IRs is part of the reason.
Одни переборы, а где мелодия?
Never been a Helix fan, I think it's a bit overrated, sounds always too weak
How long have you tried a helix?
@@JamesFlorio-ti8gc For a long time, 6 months or more maybe. Now I've switched to Fractal, a step forward.
@@cassalinson love fractal too can't blame you there lol
Helix sounds like a Marshall, Friedman sounds like a Friedman
Irx so organic
