By a remarkable coincidence, Ronald Hutton has just given a lecture called “How Pagan Was Medieval Britain?” which adds some excellent further context: czcams.com/video/7tz-PBkF720/video.html

Hi @diversothermonks I was wondering if you could give me the sources which you refer to in your video "pagan gods - christian ancestors?".
I'm writing a book on the subject and help from you would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Nice Video Hope Your Church is doing well, I am Catholic but personally I have respect for the Orthodox as you guys still use and preserve many of the old Christian traditions.

Hi Father, I loved the video where you had related to us the Venerable Bede's writing on the pagan mythic past and your impressions in that and the Dream of the Rood and Woden. I was curious whether or not that still was able to be linked to be able to listen to it again. I thought it was one of the better views into such things I've found. I hope all is well for each and all at the monastery. Wishing you a most blessed Pentecost and Trinity Sunday.

Father, this is an excellent video. Thank You. The concept of a divine council and herarchy of divine beings, has been explored on the Lord of Spirits podcast, and by the recently passed Evangelical theologian Michael E Heiser who wrote the excellent The Unseen Relm which landed as something of a bombshell in protestant scholarship and had a huge impact at the ecclesial level too. I have been told by a scholar that there is evidence of the same understanding in Puritan writings. What books do you recommend which discuss this belief in early Christian England?

The criticism that many neopagans are guilty of making overreaching claims about the rootedness and continuity of our traditions is well taken and all too accurate. I would add though that when this criticism comes from Christian world, it's almost always from the traditional branches (Orthodox and Catholic) which leads me to notice it's a source of great pride for these Christians (in contrast to American Protestantism). It's understandable to be proud of these traditions, but those of us who are making an honest attempt to develop neopagan practices simply feel that the surviving images, stories, and history are plenty to work with - those are traditions too, and we don't need to revert to an ancient worldview to develop legitimate practices.

A very fair English treatment of the issue, which is itself fascinating.
I've yet to find any but I keep looking for some (neo)pagans discussing the work of Rene Girard in the area of religion & the impact of Christianity.

Father Great Video! I was really hoping you would be willing to expand a bit on this point " Christianity and what I'll call it its Mediterranean or I suppose Western form by which I mean as opposed to the cops or what we might call Oriental orthodox is fundamentally an expanded form of Indo-European religion under a middle eastern typology" Would you please explain how Western Orthodox Pre Reformation Christianity is of a Indo-European Formation? Most people say that Christianity is simply of a middle eastern origin

In your previous video on this subject, you mentioned that medieval folk saw Zeus as a once living person who was eventually worshipped as an ancestor and then a god. What is your source for that?
In fact Id appreciate any sources you have for this topic as I find it fascinating and am very invested in it.

I don’t know if this is what Father had in mind, but St. Athanasius in”Against the Heathen” section 10 mentions that Theseus instituted the worship of the various Greek gods who were in fact humans, and that other peoples such as the Egyptians performed funeral rites for their gods.
