The deadbolt lock design is without a doubt one of the safest lock designs in the market. Whether it is for you apartment or for your office, you can rest assured that you and your property are protected. In addition to being so security effective, deadbolt locks are super easy to install. So if you are the type who likes to get their hands dirty by picking up DIY projects then this would be a great one to try out. Below is how to install the lock in five simple steps.
How To Install A New Door Lock
STEP 1 - Make sure that you have all the tools
The first and most important thing to do when installing a deadbolt lock is ensuring that you have all the tools that you will need. This will ensure that the job is done quickly, safely and efficiently. The tools you use are more or less the same regardless of then deadbolt lock brand you choose. They include things like hammers, drill templates, chisels and many more to be discussed later.
STEP 2 - Take the necessary measurements
With all your equipment in place, the next step is to take the required measurements. Before you do this, you will have to identify the desired location for the lock. After you mark it, you will use the tape measure to take the required dimensions. One of the most important ones is the thickness of the door. This will determine whether or not the lock will fit and function effectively.
STEP 3 - Use the lock template kit to mark important slots
This genius piece of equipment is designed to help you determine where to drill the holes for your deadbolt lock installation. The kit is adjustable and this is where the measurements that you took in step 2 come in handy. All you need to do here is calibrate the kit to the door’s dimensions and fasten it over where you would like for the lock to go.
Step 4 - Drill the holes
With the template in place, you will use the drill to make holes on the door where the different lock plates will go. All you need to do here is to follow the template and drill where you should.
STEP 5 - Install the deadbolt, the strike plate and the locks themselves
Finally, you will install the different parts of the lock where their respective drilled holes are. The first to go in is always the deadbolt then the lock and finally the strike plate on the door frame. You will use screws and nails to fasten the parts and the result is a neat and fully functional door.
    Bottom line
How to Install A Deadbolt Lock is obviously not rocket science. All you need to do is to make sure that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions and our simple guidelines and you will have yourself a new and properly functioning lock in no time. Just make sure that you protect yourself and your door and everything will be fine.

What I use instead of lipstick, chalk or pencil mark is the 1 inch hole saw bit to mark where the hole should be drilled on the door frame. Just slide the 1 inch hole saw back into the hole you just drilled out for the dead bolt, close the door and using a screw driver and a hammer, and tap the 1 inch hole saw bit. Open the door and you will see a dotted circle created by the saw bit. This is the exact spot that will be perfectly inline with the latching and the hole to the strike plate.

Recommend always using longer screws to secure the strike plate so the screws reach the door framing. Much harder to bust through.

A deadbolt installed as shown can easily be defeated with brute force because the bolt will just tear out the wooden jamb of the door. Better quality deadbolts come with a metal catch for the deadbolt which is installed under the catch plate which is secured with 2-3 long screws which reach the framing around door. Installation is similar it simply requires a deeper mortice for the catch side.

So I am getting the replacement doors and will be putting in all new locks and hardware. It may have been pure luck, but I came across your video. Think I will put in deadbolts in the 4 exterior doors, just for safety sake. All the doors should be here next week, I hope. Wish me luck. Thank you for this video.

I know this is common sense to most of you but I’ve seen a lot of people use deadbolts with a LEVER to unlock it from the inside rather than a key for BOTH sides. Which is fine if it’s a door with no windows. If you have a door with windows, someone simply needs to break the glass and reach through and unlock it. Always use a 2 way key deadbolt if windows are present.

You have a Milwaukee jig to make sure your hole is in the right place, but you are just guessing at where you are going to have the center? Why even use the jig? Also, a lot of people complain that this jig moves around basically ruining their doors. I used the Ryobi Hole jig and it basically is a use once and throw it away jig, but the results were decent.
Unlike the Milwaukee, the hole positions lock in place so the door knob hole placement is not going to move around front to back and the entire jig screws to the front of the door, so it's not going to move too much. The problem is, the entire jig is plastic and even though the door I used it on was the maximum thickness for the jig, it still managed to screw in slightly crooked.
The jig you used to mark the strike plate has a little piece of metal hanging off the end. it's sharp and it fits perfectly in the hole on the front of the door. You are supposed to use that for removing the wood for the strike plate after you smack the outline into it. I didn't figure this out until I had spent about 10 minutes messing around with a chisel. You never mentioned it and I don't know if you are just unaware of it's use, of had a problem with it. It would have been useful to know if there is a reason to not use it instead of a chisel. If there is no reason NOT to use it, you wasted a bunch of my time today by not mentioning it's other use.

      Hi Joshua,
So for your question, the answer is No.
this template is for standard door thickens, but if you like to do it yourself most locks that you can buy on hardware stores also come with paper templates so you can pretty much mark the holes for the installation even though your door is thick as you mentioned, otherwise you can call a local locksmith to help you with this project. something very very important to mention is that you will need a special lock that can function with this door thickness and it’s not going to be easy one to find one... consider your options and talk to a local locksmith company that can assist you I think that’s going to be the best way.
      I hope that helped

    • @Marcoosianism
      @Marcoosianism Pƙed 6 lety

Agustin Velez: First check what backset "template" your deadbolt is compatible with (might be one or the other or both). If it's either 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 then you don't have a choice. If it's both then check the backset of your doorknob below. You would usually want to match the backset of your doorknob so it looks consistent. If there happens to be no doorknob and your deadbolt supports both backset templates then the choice is yours!

Silver Eagle Locksmith..That’s not the question. The Standard is 5 1/2 “. That’s what manufacturers use in standard cut doors. That’s what hardware manufacturers use to make their products such as reinforcement wraps. You Can Use 6,12, 16 3/8 or any other number you can dream up, but the question is “What is the Standard “??? It’s 5 1/2”. Not sure why? But it is..
