In this documentary, The Wire's Zeeshan Kaskar explores various aspects of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project's contract was awarded to Adani Group by the Maharashtra government. Having clinched the contract to revamp Asia's largest slum clusters back in November 2022. Having said that, this project will affect the lives of millions of poor living here.
In the latest development concerning the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, the Adani Group has unveiled its pledge to furnish "eligible residents" of the Dharavi slum clusters with "brand-new 350 sq ft residences", but the Dharavi residents say that they want new homes at the same place. This video has a lot of details regarding where the people of Dharavi would be relocated and who the present residents of Dharavi are. Gujjus are only in retail businesses. Due to slums there businesses run. Locals don't work in cheap salaries and 12+ hrs. If slums don't exist gujju businesses won't work. Gujju buisnesses are zero in Innovation, tech. Mumbai run in MNCs and service based industry where gujjus don't exist much. Wipro, ambani etc are 50+ yr old companies others are not. Already many gujjus leaving Mumbai and going abroad.

Most of Mumbai and surrounding townships including oldest parts of Navi Mumbai are between 45 to 90 years old. Some buildings are 100 years old. All of these areas need redevelopment but by a large government corporation who should be the nodal body. Like CIDCO. Except for heritage buildings practically any structure over 40 years need to be demolished and remade. This will also help to widen roads, create parks and large parking spaces. Such a large scale project is only possible in China. Probably they will complete it in two decades. Just tacking a slum like Dharavi, that too by Adani, is nothing but a racket and land grab. India is riddled with corrupt politicians. Nothing on a mega scale is possible. The long term solution is 25 new cities and cutting down to size the ten odd A grade cities. No city should have a population of more than 1 crore.

Considering that the whole of present day Mumbai is built on reclaimed land, I woukd assume all earlier industrialized land, and smaller live-work land parcels like Dharavi must be heavily polluted with decades of unregulated toxic runoffs.
And Adani Group wants to build on this and make some uber 'development '. And surely there's some TDS scandal brewing too...
I don't think people below a specific socio-economic level should be even allowed to breed and produce children. Not only these poor people themselves suffer but they will even make their kids suffer for the next 70-80 years due to lack of resources and better future prospects.
Policy makers should seriously consider passing a bill to this end.
