  • Check out this excerpt of footage of 1933 Kentucky Derby! Seen here are the crowds in the paddock and grandstand and the parade to the post that preceded the race. The 1933 Derby featured the famous "fighting finish" between the jockeys of Brokers Tip (the winner) and Head Play.
This unique amateur footage was filmed by attorney, judge, city alderman and amateur cinematographer Judge Arthur E. Hopkins. Portions of the Hopkins film collection, which resides at the Filson Historical Society in Louisville, Kentucky (www.filsonhistorical.org), have been preserved through grants from the National Film Preservation Foundation (www.filmpreservation.org), and through generous donations to a recent Filson Power2Give.org campaign.
To see the rest of Judge Hopkins's footage of the '33 Derby, including undercard races and a brief view of the final stretch, and selections from nearly 30 minutes of newly-preserved footage of downtown Louisville, central Kentucky, and Southern Indiana, tune in to WHAS News the week after the 2014 Derby for a special segment on the films and their preservation.
To see the films in their entirety, join us at the Filson Historical Society at noon on Friday, June 13th for a special screening and lecture on the films, and at Dreamland (www.dreamlandislouisville.org) on August 1st at 6pm for a screening during the First Friday Gallery Hop.
