Simpler is to pin prick a balloon and stretch it over the bottle neck. Balloon will expand and gradually release CO2. When balloon goes deflat3s either shake mixture or replace.

Think about the head space, you want to keep the water high enough, but not so high you get foam through the generator cap. CO2 is HEAVIER, so the first bubbles are just air pushing out until the CO2 reaches the cap. Then, on the indicator bottle put a hole in on the side and run that water just below the hole so it flows out, not fill another bottle.
    I hope this helps.

I'm sorry if this seems dumb, but I didn't get you. I understood the part about having enough headspace so that you don't get foam through the 'generator' cap. Didn't understand what you mean by 'indicator bottle' -> and hence, I don't follow anything after that :/

Hello great vid. I've been looking into making one of these types of diy co generators. Mind sharing the link to stl of caps for others with 3d printers?
Going to make a diy co2 sensor (microcontroller based). The average co2 level outdoors is between 250-400ppm. Indoor co2 levels are generally higher. I'm told the plants i grow benefit from co2 levels in the 1000-1200ppm range to increase yields. Wonder how much these diy generators produce and if beneficial in open unsealed tents grows. If you are interested I can report back the amount of co2 your solution provides with my 2x4 setup. I hope to find out if this generator or multiples of it are able to bridge the gap to the desired co2 levels. If not, still a fun little project to see what actual amount of co2 is produced.

I made one with 5x your recipe in a 5 gallon clear blue water jug bought from walmart and added an air stone to keep it constantly mixing as well as an aquarium heater in the sugar mix to keep temps around 70-80f all times. The exhaust tube is taped behind the fan that blows over my canopy. Been 3 days now and my 4x4 tent just smells like bread and liquor but CO2 PPM still at what it started at around 400ppm-500ppm (sensor in the canopy)... Not sure how effective this is, maybe it just takes time but so far it has not done anything for me. Also I made sure the yeast was activated in 105f water for 15 minutes before mixing it in. Just my $0.02 is all.

@ Yeah, I thought this too. Found out that my CO2 sensor was faulty, I purchased a new CO2 sensor. Levels were steady between 400-500 PPM over a few weeks at 5x the recipe still using a new batch of regular yeast and sugar water. I also tried 5x of instant (activated) yeast as well and co2 didn’t get above 500 even with my vent fan off for a day, turning off my exhaust vent actually made co2 drop into the 300’s.

It really work, but this amount is only for fresh transplated seedlings ,half feet (15cm) big, in small 1,5x1,5x2 tent sealed with duct tape over all zip and without any holes and venting... For mid veg plant 1ft tall and wide you need 4x more yeast, that means, you need 4x more water and sugar (bigger amount of water and sugar=longer live) . In high temps (95F or 30C) it generate nice amount of co2. But for 3x3x6ft big tent with 4 big plants in mid-late veg stage, you will need at least 10gal (40l) jerrycan with 4 cups of yeast and 40 cups of sugar. Also big tents are not so sealed, so you need place tent in sealed room, where you can see big leakages of CO2. Cca 1000ppm in tent means 700-800ppm in closed room... In night you need know, how to stop dosing co2 in tent. After heat up, it boiles really crazy and can in hour after light off rise up to 5000ppm.
GL and HF with testing, at 1st, with at least 2 co2 sensors (inner and outer with alarm, that you stay alive :D ) and fan circulating air from bottom of tent! Dont forget venting in room in night...
Btw sealed tent need have A/C unit with dehumidifiing, power od cooling must be equal with power of light, and dehum capacity same as daily amount of waterring water

How to you avoid losing all that CO2 when you're running an exhaust fan? My fan, which I have to run to keep the temperature down in the tent, sucks out virtually all the CO2 my 5-gallon DIY-bucket-rig is generating, and it's output is quite high. It was great in the cold winter months but isn't working in the summer. Any ideas? Thanks for the video.

Put your generator at one end of the tent and you Co2 at opposite end. Provided your generating constant co2 your plants will use it. It's more important that you moderate the temperature.

You need to get a ton of stuff dialed in before you start worrying about co2. For the average at home grower co2 isn't worth the hassle. Unless you're growing in a sealed, climate controlled grow room then co2 probably won't make a noticable difference in your results. Just use quality lights like HLG, dial in your nutes and keep VPD on point.

That's what I was thinking too, surely the reaction alone is enough without the second bottle, my thoughts were either maybe that it slows the rate of reaction, slowing the release of co2 or it is to prevent airflow into the reaction bottle, if anyone could back these thatd be great but tbh i dont think its of too much importance although it is nice to see how much co2 is being bubbled through and when your reaction is finished

@@rowanmontague422 - I also question the efficacy of this method. My tent isn’t sealed and I don’t have anything to actually measure the PPMs of CO2.
I just did it for fun but I doubt it’s making a difference in my garden at the moment. To really benefit from CO2 you need it over 1000 PPM. So a different delivery method would be in order. I don’t think I’m there yet to invest in tanks and CO2 regulators. Maybe after a few more grows.
