We were taking fleet vehicles to one to limit downtime. We got told after a while to stop doing that. On my vehicle, they tried to look at the diff fluid and then said, "We can't get the plug out". A year and a bit later they claimed that someone broke the plug, who taouched it before them. I've driven the work vehicle since new.. It was them. I also knew a few people that worked there and they wouuld tell me stories of them using the good oil out of the containers for their own cars and put regular oil in them.
Stripped oil pan plugs was a regular story. No oil filter gaskets causing leaks. Double oil filter gaskets causing leaks. No oil in engine at all. The bogus "injector cleaner" that only dripped cleaner into the runners via a vacuum port. Wrong wipers. Saying they changed air filters when they didn't.
    I drive a euro luxury sedan. I don't need a bill for a new $16k+ engine.

Hey, someone who works at one of these places. We don't do a full inspection but there is still a lot of stuff they want us to look at. As well as doing the paperwork and the actual oil change. Cooperate wants us to do that all in 15 minutes. The rush usually comes from management. I'm lucky enough to work at one where they rather I be thorough than quick.

If you want something done right, you do it yourself.

I couldn't agree more. The aztek is how i found you. It ran great and had the death cool removed when I bought it from my boss. That 3400 was running great still and I had to scrap it because of moving somewhere else far away

I recently went to a pepboys to have new tires put on my bmw. They were so packed with work which was mainly putting tires on vehicles since they were aligned with tire rack etc. that they rushed to do the inspection and forgot to put the cover back on my engine bay and got grease on my paint. They simply were pushed and pushed to do so much work in such a little amount of time it made me not want to ever return.

In most cases I blame the business. Proper training is crucial. Teaching integrity to employees is crucial. Monitoring is crucial. And firing those who don't care is crucial. You run your business well and you wind up with a happy customer every time. One of the reasons I do my own oil changes is because I know it's been done right. One time I went to an independent shop while out of town, and they actually let me do most of the work myself. They were awesome and I paid them extra. As meticulous as I am, one time I changed the oil in my wife's car and I actually forgot to pour in the new oil. Yup, I did it. I started the engine and watched to make sure there was oil pressure and it looked good. Then I closed the door and saw no oil pressure! I immediately cut the engine and discovered my mistake and added oil. If there was someone else present I would have asked them to kick me in the ass, I was so mad at myself. And I was mad at Toyota too. With the engine running and the door open, the damn computer decided to warn about the open door. Once the door was closed, that's when it decided to report no oil pressure. Really??! Turns out that car didn't have a traditional oil pressure light, it had a text display controlled by the computer. Grrr!

For the most part they are warm body companies. They go through employees like crazy. Teaching integrity to someone making eight dollars an hour good luck.

Did you get any new owners manuals?

Nah, not lately. I haven't really been on the hunt for any. Eventually I'll start looking again. Too busy with other things right now.
