  • From several places in Scotland, the ferry leaves for Orkney. If you are lucky, you’ll pass the Old Man of Hoy (the male version of Heligoland’s Lange Anna ;)). Mainland, the main island of Orkney, offers unique and interesting tourist attractions. During my time there, I visited many old sights, including the Prehistoric Ring of Brodgar, Standing Stones of Stenness and Skara Brae. Also, the Italian Chapel and Churchill Barriers from the Second World War period, may not be missed when you discover this breathtaking island.

After watching the BBC tv series Oliver's Travels, I wanted to visit the Orkneys, luckily I found a coach tour for Dornock and the Orkneys. We got the ferry from John O'Groats(?) to the Orkneys unfortunately the ferry was late picking us up at JO'G so missed out of some the sitex. We did get to see the Italian Chapel, the cathedral of St.Magnus, Scarpa Flow and the Ring of Brodgar unfortunately we couldn't leave the coach as we miss the ferry back. Number 1 on my list when I win the lottery is to hire a car and your guide

My favourite series I watch over and over. My ancestors are from Orkney so it's more special. Lucky you getting there. I'm in New Zealand and not a traveller so youtube has been great.

Well, 'sites' or 'sights', it's a wonderful place that I shall probably never see again, as I am now 81 and getting creaky, so I don't think I shall be able to go there again. Enjoy it for me, the rest of you, if you manage to visit the incomparable Orkney Islands!

Please visit the Italian Chapel for me! Built by Italian Prisoners of War during WWII, it is a wonderful example of religious fervour by people who made use of left-over materials to build a Catholic chapel to worship in.

"Old SITES, not 'sights'!. If you get to visit Maes Howe, the chamber tomb, you can creep down the tunnel to get in. You can see where some visiting Scandinavians, on their way home from the Crusades, wrote graffiti in runes on the wall, saying modest things like "Ragnar Ericsson was here", and "Sigurd Longsword wrote this. I always get the most beautiful women. I always win my battles and my foes run away from me". These young men don't change!!
