제주의 민요들은 수세기에 걸쳐 사랑, 기쁨과 슬픔, 섬의 아름다움 등 다양한 주제를 다루고 있다.
작곡가 프랭크 티켈리는 제주민요가 가진 밝고 활기찬 정신의 선율을 최대한 살리기 위해 광범위한 대위법과 화성을 사용하였다.
총 3악장으로 구성되어 있는 '제주를 품은 한국민요'는 악장을 서로 선율적으로 연결시켰다.
2악장 선율은 1악장 중간에 예고되어 있고, 3악장의 멜로디는 1,2악장에서 예고되어있으며 피날레에서 클라이막스로 등장한다. 이러한 교차적인 연결은 공연하고 듣는 모든 사람들에게 흥미를 일으키며, 동시에 3악장 모두 눈에 잘 띄게 통일시키는 역할을 한다.
Jeju folk songs have covered a variety of themes such as love, joy, sadness, and the beauty of the island over centuries. Composer Frank Ticheli used extensive counterpoint and harmony to capture the bright and lively spirit of Jeju folk songs.
Comprising three movements, "Embracing Jeju in Korean Folk Songs" connects the movements melodically. The melody of the second movement is hinted at in the middle of the first movement, and the melody of the third movement is foreshadowed in both the first and second movements, culminating in a climax in the finale. This interweaving connection generates interest for both performers and listeners alike while simultaneously serving to visibly unify all three movements.
