San Leandro, California - The way I remember it.....

- This is a tribute to 'My Little Town', San Leandro, Calif. from the 1960's,1970's and 1980's. Although I've been gone since 1983 and it's almost unrecognizable to me today, the town exists best in my memories. Here are a few of the sights of the town as I remember it to be. I hope you will enjoy the fond memories that I have of My Little Town.
What a wonderful trip down memory lane. So thankful for the "wonder years" that we were part of growing up.

I lived off Davis Street from 1959 - 1972 on Melcher Street and loved the area! I have so many great friends still from the area. Seeing all of the pictures of the area brought back so many memorie's. Who ever put this together did a wonderful job and I thank you. Great Job.

Not only did I live on Melcher in 1959 It was also my paper route a few years later, The Morning News" !
Our little town.
Lived the first 21 years of my live there. Born at memorial, went to garfield, wilson, muir, lincoln, lived on gardner, last address was on Avon. Sometimes I miss it.
Born in 67 I left in 98 anyone remember the sl strip? Miss it I grew up on 143d across the street from fire house antone ct I'm in Buffalo NY. Now man have I learned about snow wow!.
Awe, the SL strip, convertibles with screaming kids, and Pring's .... you must be about a 100, like me. Bravo!

Grew up in San Leandro . My first job was at the Shell gas station on Bancroft & Estadillo. Went to Washington elementary school on Dotton ave, Bancroft Jr High & graduated from SLHS class of 83. Brings back good memories!

Hello. I love I. San Leandro currently. The Coffee factory was demolished when I was about 10.
I am now 13 years old and am a student at Muir middle school.
Pacific high school is not their anymore.
And SL was remodeled and now the campus stretches across streets and Shopping plazas.
Muir is now the Better school and Bancroft is Ratchet.
Actually we just finished the Addams Family Musical at the High school performing arts center and theater.
My last street was Wayne Avenu

Thanks for putting this up. All I did was complain about San Leandro while I was growing up (1955 - 1968) and yet watching your video I realized for the first time that it WAS my little town. Thanks.

Thank's for the memories. So good seeing some of the buildings I had forgot about over the years. Always fun taking a little trip down memory lane. I grow up in San Leandro and lived there my whole life till moving to Iowa 14 years ago.
I grew up in San Leandro. Still live 2 blocks from Bayfair mall.
I lived a couple blocks from Bayfair on Adason just off Hesparian.

You can tell which part of town JD is from. I'm used to Porkys Pizza Palace, Kelloggs on Williams St. Pacific HS, Anchor Hocking and riding bicycles through the creek in Bonaire all the way to the Marina past Bonaire Park !

Thanks many a good memory. Seems like things changed a lot after the 80s, I graduated from SL in 85 back in the days when we still had the smoking lot and off campus privilege's. Ahh those were the day's much more freedoms than today today's PC world. Remember the air siren lol
Great video! Good job. I lived there in the 60's and 70's off Hesperian on Adason. Went to Halcyon then Jefferson after they closed Halcyon.
Awesome. I was a class of '92 grad and haven't been back since '98.
Duffy's had the best ice cream. Marble Fudge and Cherry Jubilee was my favorites.

Born and raised in good old sl. Born at Memorial Hospital, went to Washington, Bancroft, and SL. Lived there from 1971 to 2002. Made biggest mistake of my life moving from there to ice cold Wisconsin in 2002. Miss SL a lot.
Hind sight is 20/20, my friend. It WAS a great town, and I'm glad to have been a part of it .... whenever!
Swell and accurate I moved from SF in1942. St Marys, St Elizabeths, USF and Cal
lived on Valley St and Juana Ave - Kathmandu Washington DC and now Harpers Ferry WV Great life!

Nice video. One wish...that there had been a picture of John Muir Jr HS and Pacific HS. I lived in Floresta Gardens and had the choice. I went to Bancroft then Pacific.

Great photos...Roosevelt (lived accross the street from Roosevelt from 1955 to 1970), Bancroft, & SLHS and all the rest brings back memories...I could almost hear Frank DeMello shouting "No Running" at Farley Pool.
Dean Thompson lived 3 houses away on Pala Ave. when I was a kid. I recall that their band was called "Hank Jones and the white bucks". Used to listen to them practicing in Dean's garage. Great guys!
I am not sure I completely agree with the comment, " it's almost unrecognizable to me today." For the past 30 years, I have held the opinion that San Leandro is the land that time forgot. Many of the neighborhoods look exactly the same as during the 1960s. The Bonaire neighboorhood looks exactly the same (there are no Starbucks here and no office buildings here). The Marina Faire neighborhood looks exactly the same (there are no Starbucks here and no office buildings here). The neighborhoods between East 14th Street and Doolittle Drive are all exactly the same (these neighborhoods are all lower middle class, and have a charming shabbiness about them, and still have runty-little grocery stores). John Muir Junior High School (my school) looks exactly the same, at least from the outside. East 14th Street is very much the same -- mostly this street has small businesses, trailer parks, laundries, used car lots -- - all in all, East 14th Street is much the same. Of course there are some differences: (1) The 50 foot tall naked girl at the San Leandro BART station is a new feature of San Leandro; (2) The shopping center at Marina Faire is thoroughly Asian. Most of the businesses are Asian, e.g., Chinese and Filipino. I do not remember seeing any Asian families in Marina Faire. I lived on Bermuda Avenue in Marina Faire (1964-1968); (3) Marina Boulevard has several glitzy new car dealership; and (4) My high school PACIFIC HIGH SCHOOL was torn down (apparently the result of a stupid and absurd decision-making process).
It kind of depends upon which side of the freeway you are speaking of, Tom. But, I get your point. My old neighborhood is the same except my old house has become a two-story, and the sidewalks are lined with bumper to bumper cars.
Hope you still see these comments. spent time in Hayward as a kid. Dad bowled at Midway Bowl. I remember a large Coca Cola bottle at the coke plant? Also remember eating a burger at a place called McDuffs. Do you know of that hamburger joint? was it a good burger or just a good memory? thanks.

Ghirardelli is still there at 1111 - 139th St., but the Golden Grain side closed in 1991

Nice photos. But why do you have the Oakland coliseum ballpark stadium? That is NOT in San Leandro, it's in OAKLAND, CA, my hometown so I should know. I think that song is corny. I thought it was corny in the 1970's and more so now.

A lot of fine people from Oakland were envious of life in San Leandro back in the 50'a thru 70's. Happily, SL is a more 'open' town than it was then. I get your anger!
