I love this, I have only been Orthodox for about nine months. But I’ve been going to Orthodox Church for about two years. The orthodox church I go to there are no former gang members or drug attic’s, but only college graduates very educated people they seem to be intellectuals, but I am a former gang member drug addict alcoholic, but Christ has delivered me. Therefore the church should I go to It’s difficult to make connections because of our different backgrounds. I wish that I lived close to this church. Unfortunately, the conversations at my church are about education and what college you went to and intellectual conversations. I’m not saying this in a bad way, but it’s hard to make connections though I love my church
Suggest you communicate this honestly. They should be reaching to you and pulling you up, trying to get to know you for where you come from, enfolding you in the brotherhood. God bless you

100% same situation for me. I've been a member of two different parishes and same situation. But I visited Fr Turbos parish in KC. Fun time if you can make it happen. Visiting other parishes can help lift my spirits sometimes when I'm feeling a bit outside -although I love my parish and the Church and thank God I found it. God speed, brother 💪☦️
@@fl7210No one will even take me as a spiritual child. I was sent by Christ so I continue but it can be discouraging at times. The camaraderie is not as open to all believers as it is seen to be by those lucky enough to enjoy it. Any Orthodox reading this maybe seek out and reach out to the loners in your own parish. Even if it's a bit awkward it might strengthen us all. God is sending some of the least expected to Orthodoxy 🙏 ☦️
You've only been there 9 months. Give yourself time. A lot of things are new to you. I'm introverted and black in an all white parish. It's taken many years, but I have a place there. I'm loved. Who is your godparent. Connect with them first. Christ wants you there. You have much to offer. Orthodoxy is for you. Don't be intimidated by others' education or money. The faith is well worth the effort. Christ is with you. You will be disappointed by others (and yourself) sometimes. Keep striving. You will grow through the grace given by the Lord. I have lived this! God keep you!

It was his nickname when he was a tattoo artist. Then, when he was coming into the Orthodox Church and looking at patron saints, his friend found out there was a St. Turbo in the early church.

I very much appreciate what Father says about America. We have more in common with old school that were multi ethnic and multi national than the modern nation state or many feudal society.
But, One of the things that breaks my heart as someone coming back into the faith, and studying Scripture again with fresh eyes, is how dismissive we are towards material concerns, despite all we now know about how poverty affects things like familial stability. Secular society straight up proved the prophet Isaiah correct using crude materialism, but it's like we still genuflect to the distortions imposed on our faith by worldly powers in previous ages who had to justify vast inequalities in wealth and power in the face of what the actual lessons of Scripture, from the prophets to Christ, that specifically say or societies will be judged for leaving people sick, homeless, naked, and unjustly bound.
I think the real challenge to us after decades of modernity is to actually bring Christ to industrial society, which necessarily cannot look like how the Church looked during feudalism, the classic era, and in fact might actually look more like the religion of the Roman proletarii that stood against imperial Rome, with all it's worldly wealth and power.
I can't help but think what Isaiah would say if you brought him to a modern prefabs home factory, then to the local skid row, then showed him a spreadsheet of productivity, available resources, available manpower, and the myriad social crises we have.
I have a feeling it would be "of course your society is going to hell in a hand basket. God warned you this would happen. What are doing about it?"

What father says is true. Growing up in around liberalism and especially african american liberalism made me cold towards it. I got caught up in being more right wing and more "based" as a reaction against what i was seeing. Its just another trap of the evil one.

I applaud everyone's good work but adding dome context would have been helpful since I am only tangentially familiar with the Order and Father not at all.
An interesting discussion. I'm a bit confused though about all the different brands of Orthodox y. If one is Greek Orthodox for example, can a person switch to Serbian or Antioch Orthodox? Can one go from new calendar Greek Orthodox to old calender Russian? Also, new calender vs old calendar Orthodoxy. Is one better than the other?
In many churches the service is in a language that I have no clue of. It is completely foreign. Does the Serbian Orthodox have services are in English?
Whether Greek, Russian, Serbian, Antiochian Orthodox, etc, we all share the same faith, creed, sacraments and communion, including between those on the new calendar or old calendar. For laity it doesn’t matter where you commune jurisdiction wise, as long as they are in the canonical church. New Calendar or Old Calendar the sacraments are still the same and valid. Of the different jurisdictions in America, you will find most are English speaking or English friendly. Antioch and Greek Orthodox have the greatest volume of English only services, especially Antioch. Rocor and Serbian are commonly conducting services in English as well, with a spattering of prayers in Church Slavonic. Some parishes are more ethnic than others. Antioch is very pan Orthodox in their approach, and I know many native born Americans that mainly speak English in all jurisdictions.

A story from the book of 1 Kings, where a prophet by the name of Elijah when he beheld 400 false prophets of the false object of worship called Baal said to them if you think you're God to be the answer then assemble yourselves and call me fire down from heaven; Elijah said to them likewise shall I do the same as the story goes the 400 false prophets of the false being made themselves a bunch of ruckus calling out to the lie they believed.
Elijah surely used scripture from the word of God the Old Testament or Old Covenant or Agreement and fire did fall from heaven.

I believe that God cares for his creation and doesn't want to lose them, because I believed in Jesus and had the humility to honor his name many times throughout my life.
I attained mercy through the New Covenant, agreement, or Testament. Only parts of the old still apply. The old prepared place for the New.
I believe Love is many things, and is doing many things read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (KJV) and study the langauge of the time (Middle English) and do for yourself an order of operations properly like you would use in Algebra. If there are 18000+ religions in the world I know to whom I say go to save me trouble, the name and the ideas that I will confess as Lord to be serving of and to call my friend.

A concept of the word is the idea that is behind it or what should pop into your head by what the author is meaning. If you do not have the idea of the word correct you have a misconception and it changes the whole story.
Read the KJV, pray for wisdom, pray without ceasing: don't go a day without it.
Islam also offers people a practical way to take out anger. It’s easy/ worldly. Whereas Christianity is about overcoming your anger through forgiveness. Focusing on spiritual growth rather than other people’s sin and how they hurt you. This is something that is unnatural to our world. It’s a narrow road for a reason. The path is not easy to follow, especially when you are wounded.

I find it distinctly hard to believe that a branch of Christianity, lacking almost all practices and beliefs of the early church, that emerged around 500 years ago in response to and out of the exclusive context of corrupted Roman Catholicism, that has since fractured and distorted itself into hundreds upon hundreds of sub branches all claiming to be true and disagreeing with each other on many issues to be true Christianity. Super imposing western 21st century interpretation and context back 2,000 years just doesn’t result in proper and full understanding.
