  • Last year my Nephew and I talked about whether he liked Horizon Forbidden west as much as Zero Dawn. As usual, his answer kinda surprised me.

Hey Reggie! I'm glad your nephew played this game and gave it the rating he did. Now I want to own a copy, because I've never played a "Horizon Dawn" game. Thanks guys.

I just finished the game this weekend. I played Horizon: Zero Dawn this before this and I liked it, and I put off playing this game for a long time, for good reason, but a couple of weeks ago I decided I'd finally play through it as Id just finished God of War: Ragnarok. (I'm actually finding I can be incredibly patient these days waiting for game prices to go down and with digital taking over, that means no Collectors Editions so I think waiting for sizable price drops will be even more easy because the incentives to get them day 1 with digital soundtracks and digital art books, and bloated prices for nonsense digital items like Call of Duty now, I guess Microsoft gets you with the Game Pass subscription right off, then picks your pocket on the microtransactions to get even more, so it's basically the Free 2 Play model, but you have to pay a subscription fee to play the Free 2 Play designed game). Anyway, yeah, I still haven't gotten Spider-man 2 either, and I'll likely get it when it hits $20.
But, yeah, I finally played this and I came to a realization that it wasn't nearly as good as Id thought it would be for a couple of reasons. First, with the PS3 there were tons of games to play and there was always something on tap to play. My PS3 and Sega Genesis collections have the most games, of all consoles, and the PS5 probably has the smallest because there's no games for it, but I found with all of those games they're all 8-10 hours. Games these days are all pretty much open world and are 40+ hours. Some are 60+ and you ask yourself (with the mindset of a game like Gears of War or Uncharted) how they could fit a game that massive onto a game disc. But, that's the problem. My backlog is massive and there's games coming out, and my time is really limited these days, I don't have the throw away time I used to have so I've got to pick and choose and these days and open world games really are a lot of assets reused over and over again. You're really not getting your money's worth, you think you are, but your $70 now actually is only getting you 6-8 hours of actual gameplay, the rest of the time is filler. Games like Uncharted and Gears of War or StarCraft are to the point. Open world games like these are drawn out to make you feel like you're getting that gameplay, but you're really not. The time you spend traversing the map is a lot. Before I started the game, I checked HLTB and it said 20 hours for the main story, but, that depends, which is my next point, but it wasn't 20-28 hours or wouldn't have been id played the game by the rules.
The second thing with this game, was the acting. I don't know if it was intentional, but there was an underlying factor to the game, which leads to my suspicion. Society today is rather interesting, once Europe, I guess, lifted it's government mandate for church service on Sundays. It's crazy how much of the society suddenly went secular and started criticizing those who had a faith, and that's what this games message is, that people who have a faith are deceived and crazy and aren't taking the time to fully look around and understand "reality", that we all just blindly go about our days and Aloy, the "me too" kind of character is at the charge of all of that and there's all these strong female personalities suddenly, and it's not realistic. There's women in the military, there is, but most of you mandated they sign up for selective service will throw a fit, that's just how's it's always been, men have always been and women EXPECT them to be the provider and protector of the family, men fought for their honor and their family and women, because by nature that's how they always are and want to be nurture the family and the children, so it feels fake, even when you try to built the game around a female protagonist, and with the message they're sending that she's the only enlightened one, that's the interesting thing with the cast, or kind of my point. I couldn't tell if the acting was really that bad or if they were making all of these characters seem like they were part of this big cult and they all had this deer in the headlights look. Especially after playing God of War Ragnarok and watching the performance of that talent, Horizon just felt hollow.
To the final point, and I HATE it from last generation and this generation. During the Xbox 360/PS3 era, it seems games wanted to be a lot like Gears of War with cover-based shooting. This era, they all want to be like Demons Souls, to where they're now called "Souls-like". The difficulty is ramped way up there and you're really finding yourself wasting a lot of time getting past a point because they cranked the difficulty up to 11 (just for normal) and it's a lot of slow moving, chip away at their life bar, and dodge. Aloy doesn't even have a guard button...... Why? The camera was messed out because you're enemies that were GIGANTIC could span the whole screen and the camera would fidget and lock you into a spot you wouldn't know you were caged in at, you'd die and then start over. To try and save some time, because my time has become valuable and I wanted to have the experience, I'd look at online guides, and wouldn't you know it, there were people that could down the enemies much faster, but interesting enough, they were playing on New Game+, not a fresh save. So, I didn't really like that either with limited time.
Sony have always been notorious for their quality experiences and their solid first-party games and you want to experience that, especially if you came out of the PS3 era with a PS3 instead of a 360 or a PS3 preference to your Xbox 360, but as you get older, you just don't have the time anymore and the bloated game experiences with the insane difficulty games like Demons Souls (the Souls-like) experience drop on you commanding even more of your time it's pretty sad. 8 hours tells a really good story. It's what put Naughty Dog on the map, finally. You don't have to spend time running around like you're doing a to-do list for your wife, you can get rid of the filler and get to the point, and I think that's why the rise in indie games has been so successful. Sure, it's not as fancy looking, it looks like a Super Nintendo or Sega Saturn game, but you play it and move on to the next great game. It's like open world games were developed for those in poverty that maybe can't afford a lot of games, kind of mentality, but you're still not getting that moneys worth. Compare this to Resident Evil 2. Most people will tell you Resident Evil 2, why? Because it's short and impactful, not drawn out.
    Just my opinion

From a gameplay standpoint, I loved this game more than the first one, but the main story was weaker. In Zero Dawn, the story was much more intriguing, and I feel like it had better pacing. Forbidden West's story suffers because a lot of interesting details about the world were answered in Zero Dawn, and it also ends in a way that sets up a sequel, which was pretty underwhelming to me.

I absolutely loved forbidden west, much more than the zero dawn. Combat was improved and so was the upgrade system and story. I spent 130 hours into this game and loved every part of it.

Is there still a lot of pop in textures? I had to complete the story very fast because of that. But I really want to play it again and 100% it. But I wont do that if the textures are popping in
