  • With some new weight reduction mods on the M2, we arrived at Gingerman Raceway to do battle in Gridlife's ultra-competitive Street GT class. However, the slow speed nature of the track really exposed our weaknesses. We'll be back better and faster!!

Loving this series! Thanks for letting us tag along on the development of this beast! This might be stuff you're already aware of and working on but, if not, I have some questions and maybe some useful advice on your setup:
    1. What are your toe settings like, particularly in the front? It looks like the tie rods steer the front of the knuckles so adding negative camber without touching toe adjustments should provide more toe-out, which is favorable, but it's hard to tell if that's what's going on without looking at the car. If, even with that negative camber, you put it on the alignment rack and still have toe-in up front, I would adjust the tie rods for either zero toe or slight toe-out. That would make the front-end more responsive at turn-in. I like to visualize toe and steering with my hands describing the toe angle as I move them to mimic steering. Which tire scrubs harder as you turn with toe-in vs toe-out, and what effect would that have on the car's rotation? Toe-in scrubs the outside tire harder, creating an understeer yaw moment. Toe-out scrubs the inside tire harder, assisting rotation. (If you're reading this and you have an FF car with LSD, this doesn't apply to you. Toe-in is probably the way to go for you since that outside tire will steer you harder under power, letting you get on throttle earlier.)
    2. Have you done anything with sway bars? As long as TCS (and your right foot) can be trusted to keep the rear-end in check on corner exit, a more aggressive setting on the rear sway bar should help the rear tires take on more of the load, freeing up the front to turn in harder before losing grip. Just tread lightly here because too much rear bar can make the car unstable. A rear wing would help immensely to keep it stable at speed, providing you with more aggressive turn-in at low speeds where the wing isn't as active, but more neutral balance at higher speeds.
Like you're saying, it might boil down to just approaching the limits of what the car is going to do at that ride height, with those shocks/springs, and on those tires. Alignment and swaybars are cheap though, so it might be worth playing with those before jumping into bigger expenses. Keep up the good work!

Reducing the caster and the magnitude of negative wheel offset (make it as positive as possible) shall help mitigate the understeer. Go with the widest tire/wheel and the most positive offset allowed by wheel well clearance.

  • @rubbermoetroken

Great vid, also showing why the M2 is far too heavy in OEM trim (even with your weight mods we're talking Nissan GTR weight). In order not to just murder your front tires (understeer haleluja), I would try to stay out a bit on entry and aiming for the apex with less steering input (maybe even tailgate with some decent left foot braking), sacrificing entry speed, but probably having more exit speed. This will put more stress on your rear tires, for sure but they are wide enough anyways, and would release your fronts from their grip duty, temps might come down a bit. It's all minor bits and pieces but it could help. I was having exactly the same issues with my F87 M2 comp (which is almost 200kg lighter) and it helped a bit (will now receive Team Schirmer hardware to solve it for once and for all), Pirelli Tropheo or even better, Nankang AR1 will definately help a lot, but they are real bitches in the wet, where the Cup2 still allows some decent speed. Great vid, keep up the good work ! Subscirbed !
