Ron's Lehigh River Valley Part 6 - The Easton and Northern Branch

- In this video Ron takes us on a wild ride, first talking about the the area served by the lower part of the Easton and Northern branch of Lehigh Valley Railroad and CNJ Easton back track, then what triggered his love of night photography and finally he discusses his tour of duty in Vietnam as an enlisted combat photographer. As always Ron digs into his huge collection of photographs to give us a look back in time. This video will be of particular interest to current and former residents of the Lehigh Valley familiar with Easton and the townships that border to the west and north.

Ron ...Can't thank you enough for this series of videos and the memories they bring back. I was born and raised in Wilson Borough in 1942 and still live in Palmer. It was a great place to live back then.
My father Joe Mickel worked at Dixie from 1956 to 1968. He's 96 years old as of this writing. When I was around the age of 5 he took me to the plant one evening, and I got to see the cup from the rooftop at night. Then I got yelled at by some lady who didn't see my dad at first. Some things you never forget.
Edward Thatcher is the man who died in the Dixie Cup....He lived at 725 Northampton St. in Easton and was 41 years old with 25 years experience in tower erecting. He worked for the company Tippett and Wood they erected the cup. He fell from scaffolding at the rim of the cup, into a shaft that extended 20 feet below the bottom of the cup. He fell a total of 50 feet and was dead from skull fractures before he hit the bottom. He worked tower jobs in many diffrent Nations, but sadly died just 2 miles from his home on OCTOBER 9th. 1930........
Dear Ron, I discovered your series of CZcams videos on the PeterinPA channel. I have been watching Parts 1-10... I grew up in Coplay and developed an interest in local history and railroads as a teen. I just want to tell you how much I have enjoyed your systematic video chronicles! Also thank you for serving our nation in combat. I served in Iraq and Afghanistan and some of our biggest supporters with care packages were the Vietnam veterans. I believe one of the reasons we are enamored with our local history and railroads is that it's easy to admire the generation of builders these folks were. Bridges, railroads, industries. Ron, like that generation it is clear to me that you are a Builder, in that same spirit. Learning about the past is important, because it is important to be grateful and humble. We are blessed, because others worked and sacrificed. I am a signal maintainer currently working for the NYS&W. I also spent time with the Reading and Northern, as well as CSX. Thanks again and I hope to cross paths with you.

Great to see Easton, PA and DIXIE Cup Factory. That was one of my waypoints on the trip from ABE to Milford, NJ.

Thanks Ron for your service and those great photographs of the Vietnam war. The town of Ieager, WV is pronounced as if the "I" was a "Y", been there many times in my job with the Corps of Engineers. At one time there was a "wye" in Ieager that made it an important location on the old NW line. Parts of that line were electrified at one time. Thanks for sharing your passion of photography.

The E&N Railroad was abandoned in the same year I was born (1995)
But I remember seeing the railroad tracks and eventually the removal of the tracks and signs in around 1999-2000 when I was being taken to preschool
