On July 4th 1990 Paul McCartney played at RFK Stadium. When he played the song Live and Let Die they shot off fireworks. From where I was sitting at the concert I could see the fireworks from downtown and from the show.
Last year I attended the capitol 4th on the 4th and walked all the way to Judiciary Square and transferred at Metro Center. Best decision I made because I was able to get a seat and passing thru some of the stations it was shoulder to shoulder on the platform.
Hey Rob! Great video as always. I'm coming in on the Fourth and want to view the fireworks from the Iwo Jima memorial area. What time would you say you should arrive there by to get a good seat? I don't want to waste my whole day sitting there if I don't have to, but getting a good spot there is my main objective. Thanks as always.
Can we pack a lunch to eat? We plan on eating outside somewhere but do they allow you to pack around a lunch in your backpack as your touring through the museums?

If you plan on coming to see the DC fireworks in 2023, I've got some bad news for you. The silver line extension is not running into DC until at least June 25 due to extensive track work. It will be impossible to ride the metro from anywhere in DC to Dulles airport before June 25th at the earliest. I fully expect this reopening date will slip well into July August or even later. A substantial portion of the orange line is also shut down at the same time. The orange line will be closed from west falls church to Vienna from June 3 to July 16. Again, expect that reopening date to slip by several months or more. Later this summer, the green line will be closed from Fort Totten to the greenbelt station. The official closure dates are July 22 to September 4th. Metro will provide free shuttle buses to closed stations. Using this service is quite difficult. Shuttle bus schedules are often extremely confusing. The buses fill up fast, wait times may be long, and since the buses travel in mixed traffic, they are extremely slow and generally unreliable. Previous Metro shutdowns have brought whole sections of the city to a standstill. These are some of the biggest Metro shutdowns in many years. I fully expect many months of exceptionally bad gridlock even by DC standards as tens of thousands of people give up on Metro and attempt to drive into the city. Perhaps this summer isn't the best year for a DC trip. If you are coming to DC anyway, try arriving by train instead of bus or plane. A good way to accomplish this is to fly to BWI and ride the Maryland MARC train into Union Station. If you are coming from the south, you can get a hotel near the VRE lines in Virginia and ride into Union Station during the week.

That's generally the most crowded spot on the Virginia side. So probably not later than 7. Maybe 6 if you want to be extra safe.

Most museums allow outside food but check the prohibited items webpage in advance to be 100% sure.
