Nice fella. He sat behind me in my class at school. Was in the school hockey team for a while when I was Captain. Remember on his 16th Birthday he got a Lambretta scooter and brought it to school in the new term. His uniform was always spotless, cheerful lad, and of course he ran the school radio....lovely 60's stuff. As we all did, he loved aeroplanes cos we next to the airport and frequently went over there with his air band radio. No one had a bad word to say about him. RIP Steve from an old school chum.

Crushing news - my wife told me yesterday evening when she got in from work, as we stood in the kitchen. I made a pretence of busying myself with drying some mugs, but I was just not wanting her to see the tears welling up.
This man was a prominent part of my youth through the 80's - from my late teens and into my twenties - especially fond memories of listening to his show whilst down at the beach. His show reflected the carefree attitude of that decade, when everything seemed less stressful, the media didn't have a stranglehold on public life, the high streets were a myriad of wonderful and varied shops and businesses, people enjoyed life and got on with things, no one stressed over stupid things like words or 'pronouns'. Life was for living. And Steve Wright's shows reflected that, but also celebrated that fact, and made us laugh, putting folks in a better mood regardless of what kind of day they'd have.
Steve Wright, along with the likes of George Michael, and many others I could mention, were a gift to the people. I feel blessed to have been around during a period of life when everything was fresh, new and exciting, and life felt like it had a future that was bright and full of promise. Now, as I fast approach my 60th birthday, I reflect on all the wonderful people we have lost publicly, and those on a personal level who have left my life, and realise it was the best time to be alive - maybe that's why we are so despised by a certain generation who refer to us as 'boomers'? Jealousy, maybe?
God bless the rest of my fellow 'boomers' out there reading this, I feel your pain, but also share your happiness in what we've lived through and experienced.
See you on the other side someday. Stay strong.

The BBC has a lot to answer for, kicking off DJ's from their prime time slots when their ratings are sky high. After 40 years you'd expect a little loyalty from your employer and a sense of gratitude for doing a really top job without any controversy. Paul O'Grady went in the same year as did Ken Bruce and Simon Mayo a year or so earlier. None of them ever put a foot wrong, and were loyal BBC employee's, I really think the BBC should be ashamed of themselves, Stress is the number one killer in this country and a precursor to so many other serious conditions!

Steve was part of my life for so lng, what a DJ he was!!! He was the best ever, without a doubt.
I can't help feeling that the BBC decision had something to do with his early departure from our lives. And they never even asked the listeners for their input. What a disgusting organisation it is.

The way the BBC treated Steve was disgraceful, they also did the same to many very highly regarded presenters such as Ken Bruce, and to many at a local level also.
Now that their audience is shrinking, they are talking about new stations aimed at older listeners, who they turned their back on.
Now they are trying to salvage a damaged reputation when its already too late.

I remember a day sunbathing on a very packed Studland Beach on a very hot summers day with my then girlfriend in 1986 or 7 while listening to Wrighty, he would bang a gong every 30 minutes for everyone to turn over so as not to burn. The crazy thing is the amount of people who sat up and turned over on the gong was to my memory, virtually the whole beach. It seemed everyone was listening to the Steve Wright in the Afternoon Show. I use to howl with laughter at this show, the posse, the satire. Steve on Radio 1 was an era I will never forget. RIP Steve Wright ❤

@PaulNurse1 that underlines the difference between radio back then & radio today. Everyone who listened to Steve Wright In The Afternoon really did listen, it wasn't just background noise.
I get a laugh when I hear the likes of Global saying they get up to 6 million listeners tuning into Heart or Smooth Radio. What that really means is 6 million radios playing to themselves in the background of a workplace & nobody is listening to it !
