  • This video showcases a unique and never-seen-together collection of 1969 era drag racing photographs shot by an teenaged amateur photographer named Phil Smith at the 1969 AHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tennessee. Narrated and produced by historian and author Geoff Stunkard, the small collection has never been seen in its entirety before. Included are the Ramchargers front engine Top Fuel Dragster, period funny cars like the Hemi Thrasher, the ex-Richard Petty #43 Jr. Barracuda, the Pandemonium 1969 Barracuda of Bob Sullivan, the Tiger Shark of George Weiler, and Bob Banning's legendary 1968 Dodge Charger. Also seen are the Dick Harrell ZL1 Camamo #1, Jim Minnick's 1969 COPO Camaro (yes, that Minnick - Top Gas racer), Bill Heilsher, and the Kimbell Bros / Bill Allen entry. B-body Mopars like Dick Landy's 1969 Flying Wedge Dodge and Ronnie Sox' 1969 A12 M-code 440-6BBL "Six Pack Road Runner. With an handful others, Stunkard give the history of the track, some of the racers, and even the spectators. Created in honor of the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals, this is drag racing's rich heritage of the 1960s. BE THERE? WERE THERE! Thunder....

Maybe not professional, but a damn site better than the average kid in the stands was able to produce with their Brownie Hawkeye. The photos are much appreciated, even more so with the insightful background explanation.

That wss NORMAL - and the burgers were done on a Coleman stove. The track had all these creeks around it - Carrier buried 4 railroad tank cars as a viaduct under the track - I saw them come out.

Always a good time with Stunkard! Well done, thanks for sharing, Amigo.
Don't belabor the image quality, etc. We're not professional photographers... hell, our eyes are older than the photos and just as "exposed". Aim for simply enjoying and sharing your detailed thoughts and memories... from you to us.
Damn Yankee? Well, you been fittin' right in fer a long time now. I'd say you are officially Rebel and formally expatriate Yankee by this point.

“Cobra Charmer” @ 4:34, not a Crosley or Morris….sectioned 50’s Ford? Nicely prepped car. Candids always show nice touches, like the WW2 Jerry can for water.
