  • How to setup RSLinx (Lite or Classic or even Gateway) to use a USB to RS232 adapter for programming and troubleshooting PLC5 - SLC500 and ControlLogix.
The USB to 232 converters work with all versions of Windows as long as you have the drivers for the Windows version you are using.

I have a laptop with a DB9 port, can I connect directly with a cable to the PLC 05/15, without the need of an adapter?

      Hello Nicolas:
Yes you may. Build a cable to the specs in the AB manual and then set up RSLinx to communicate with the front port.

Hello Bruce, Is it 25 pin plug that is going to PLC and the PLC under demonstration is PLC 5/40E or else. Can you please give a link to buy USB to serial cable and from that USB serial to PLC cable

HI: There is nothing special about the USB to RS232 adapter. There are many online that you can get that work very well.
Just do not buy a really cheap one they fail too often. An older USB2 actually works very well.
Also get a 9 to 25 pin adapter to be able to use on the PLC5 serial ports.
The cable is an AB CP3 which you can make yourself and the wiring is available online.
      Thank you

    Good evening, Bruce. I wonder why @5:46, DF1-COM1 isn't DF1-COM15. TAHNK YOU.

      Hi Dennis:
      Just the way it went.
No I don't know why at this point - That was done a long time ago.
It is always best if you can keep the comm port less than if you can. Depending on what your operating system is it may work best with Linx.
