Sean, you have added a new sense of meaning to this song for me. In my personal life, Reznor's version was for when the chaos was at it''s peak. Everything still unfolding at a pace that didn't feel like control was there and desperate to run away from it all, not caring how that "solution" would manifest. Cash's version gave me the opportunity to view this song from the perspective of late term life regret. It was beautiful and powerful in its own way, but it wasn't what I needed and made me dread being able to eventually relate to it. The tone and pace of yours hit me so incredibly different. I finally feel that I am interpretting and consuming the words in a way that feels more like healthy growing pains that I can learn from, rather than just make me feel sorry for myself. This song contributes to my ongoing process of moving on from my past, learn from my mistakes and taking responsibility for them, while also simultaneously creating a future for myself rather than self sabotage and road blocks. You continue to contribute to the ripples of my life's pond, Sean. Thank you.
Wow, I appreciate all of this! For me, there’s nothing like reinterpreting a great song. One of the things that irks me is when other artists cover songs, but they don’t climb into the emotional intent of the original, and they seem to miss the mark in terms of what’s trying to be conveyed with the words. I try to keep that part intact and at the same time spin it with my own feeling 😉
