The dungeons are parallel worlds and the keys are the same. Only different is that he can choose when to open a dungeon. When dungeons first appeared it unlocked potential for people to get them ready for higher beings.

It seems like the people making the anime are trying to stay reasonably failthful to the pacing of the web comic. theres a decent amount of down time when a massive fight isnt taking place, but the down time just makes the badass moments of power just hit so much harder. Also, hunters awaken once at some point in their lives, not when they're born.
Ya and this show does a good job with downtime because the characters are enjoyable. Ohhhhh that awakening fact makes more sense, than you 😎
