This guy is a good welder, he is doing what he can to help welders all over th he world, he is taking his TIME, MONEY, EXPERTISE, ORATORICAL SKILLS, to covey to upcoming welders what they may never otherwise learn in the best of welding schools. For anyone to make the slightest remarks that would be critical or ungrateful is a disgusting shame to say the least, and has its roots in jealousy and ignorance and awful arrogant conceit. Everyone watching his videos ought to take time out and send him a word of most grateful thanks. He is helping you with a trade that can make your life successful, and comfortable for you and your family, he is a rarity because most welders will not help their fellow craftsman because they want to be top of the totem where they work. Send him a word of thanks because life is composed of the element of (TIME), and he is using part of his God-given-time, allotted to him on planet earth to enrich your life, so that you and your family can enjoy a comfortable subsistence to live off of.

+moseseseseses Jody has taught me enough to make the claim that as a self taught welder, the skills and techniques he has helped me develop, could earn me a job welding for a paycheck if I needed to do so. You're right, our collective debt to him is enormous!

Thank you jesus god of all that is perfect because humans can be perfect as well thats why christ died in the first place for us to be perfectly perfect just like him because its so realistic in this generation and it only comes from being taught these things at a young age to begin with not in churches and discipleships diseased with legalism and perfectionism and false expectations of super apostlism and strict obedience to every whim of god because he gave us the understanding he has obviously. Other than that yeah man i agree with you. This guy has some awesome skills and obviously never sinned before like so many others on the planet that we should all bow down and worship him and exalt his welding perfection throughout the earth. :)

Welders always have some negative to say to a fellow welders, I seldom know any welders who is nice to complement other good welders work, most of them does not want to admit that others are better than they do, typical but not very professional attitude! There is always a big room for improvement, practice is the key to a better welding skills! Jody you are doing a great job sharing your knowledge! Thumbs up to you brother!

Thanks for being so selfless man. This is my wifes computer but I am subscribed to you from my own.
I did my Cert lll Engineering trade cert a few years back via RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) down under here in Western Australia, Perth and the trainer told me “When you get home, watch this dude. He’s the most comprehensive guy on the internet and his videos, in my opinion, are the best.”
I’m about to do a weld test for a local company (which hopefully if I pass, I wont have to fly from home to work anymore). To watch your videos, although a bit out of practice I’m pretty confident that I’ll smash this ensuing test. I have other Māori brothers that like watching your vids too. My trainer was right. Your vids are the best.
    Thanks again bro. Travel well..

Every single one of these tips is valuable. Anyone in welding school working plate practice should start using these tips because well, at least my class you only get *one* shot to do it right or you have to pay for an additional test. Out of 27 students, I was one of two to pass a 3G test. Some failed before they even got the root pass in. It’s sad to see a pile of plates on the floor with X’s across them in paint marker. Do your research! Practice these tips!

You do a nice job with your videos. I wish you did not get so many negative comments. I hope the negative remarks never force you to stop helping people. I hope you always keep in mind that most of the negative comments come from people who don't have as much knowledge in their whole body as you have in your pinky finger. Some people just don't know that a slight weave with the rod does not mean that you ran a weave bead. Had these people the training you and I have and work to numerous diffrent codes people like I have then they might listen a little more and talk a whole lot less. Every WPS I have tested and worked to outline max widths for what is considered a stringer and what is considered a weave bead. You can indeed run a stringer width bead with a slight oscillation. The most general rule I have found is a stringer does not exceed 3X the rod diameter without the flux and a weave will be limited to 3X the rod diameter with the flux. This video was never to teach a beginner. The scope of this video seems to me to be to help a welder with some level of skill learn to be better and help prepare said welder to take a test.

I took an adult education welding night class at my local vocational education school. I believe that I was in my late thirties when I did it. Best money I ever spent. Great teacher and helper and they would look over the student's shoulder as they welded and even guide their hands. Perhaps there's a similar option for you in your area. Either way, good luck in learning how to weld. It was one of the best things I ever did for myself.

Im taking Welding Engineering Technology and we were told that a larger weld bead (weave) generates more heat. larger and hotter heat effected zones get more grain growth because the metal is potentially held in Austinetic form for to long. Grain Growth basically means that all properties of the metal are reduced. More smaller welds (stringers) are ideal because they cool faster and the heat effected zone is smaller. Honestly though weaves are fuckin easy and weave whenever possible :)

Pipe is a different code than structural. I imagine you are TIG welding most of that pipe. AWS and L.A. City Dept Building and Safety codes allow for 1/4 stringers. Weaving even that far would leave a bead oversized.

@Krautattack0311 The weld will always be stronger when going uphill because you're getting more penetration. Think of it as scraping with a shovel. If you pull the shovel towards you'll scrape dirt towards you, if you try to push the shovel forward you'll dig into the dirt more. It matters with pretty much all forms of welding, that means MIG. MIG welding uphill can be kinda tricky, have fun!

when you have too much heat the weld cuts into the metal. it sounds weird but if you look at welds around you will see it. it is when for example joining a v-butt-weld there is a lip in the edge where the weld meets the metal. it kinda of looks as though somebody has dug a finger nail into the weld/butt face?!! ). if your are training or in industry ask someone its much easier to explain when you can see one

Throughout the day he was critiquing every and even tried to show me what his weld was like( it looked like birdshit). I told him the conditions were not up to par and i needed to be able to clean the metal before welding. He then said it doesnt matter if the metal is clean and that the ground clamp doesnt need to be moved. I told him that a clean joint as well as a good ground connection makes a big difference

You said that shortening the arc increases the voltage and decreases the amperage... you might want to double check that.

hello sir. you have the most helpful videos on you tube! I am about to take a welding coarse here in Cheyenne Wy. My nephew has started the class ahead of me and has giving me the heads up that nobody has been able to pass the X-RAY test to weld pipe? do you have any tips about how to pass this test? I will give you more details as to what he requires to pass. he makes you fill. and cannot have a bubble 3 32nds? or you fail!

Good video dude. I have come back to this from time to time for help.( I don't do 3g everyday or in the last 4 years for that matter )
I have a question........I am using a Miller Multimatic 200 for a 3G test for the state of CO. I am at 97 amps on my root to get my burn into the backing bar but I am also getting undercut. Any suggestions? I am a little out of practice but with the testing at a $100 a pop I want to make sure I get it right the first time.
I tested out on 1" plate in WI. with flying colors

alot people dont align the butts right either to far apart or to close just enough for the rod to almost fall through. for a 6010 rod.

Love you videos, long time fan, and I understand that this video is 3 years old, however. To everyone else, Weaving the electrode from left to right is not acceptable in most places and will get you a automatic fail. Run the puddle straight up, it's called a stringer bead, he is doing weaving.

    • @Hippocrab
      @Hippocrab Před 10 lety

false. in the us you are supposed to weave uphill for roots anything else can be stringer. You cant have your beads more than 2 times the diameter of the electrode

As a CWI, and CWE, If i catch you weaving, I will A. Not give you your certification, or B. I will revoke it. Weaving causes a massive HAZ and is primary cause of Lateral Cracking.

You stop watching the video to comment right when you saw him weave? Or did you continue to watch the video and actually see that he states that weaving is not allowed in a lot of tests and shows how to do stringers.. He shows both ways.. seems a lot of people watch welding videos just to be a critic LOL..

I like welding 1 inch coupons alot better yes they take awhile but you can run alot hotter 3/8c can't handle heat quick you really need to let it cool between passes

Can you make a video of a weave cover 3G. Also on my tie ins I make sure I always break arc on the same side all the time im a righty so the right side for me. Then I strike the arc above and come down the left side of the groove and right at the crator I lengthen my arc a tiny bit and trace the outside of the thumbnail looking crator in 1 complete circle and then start on my way and I have had tie ins that were almost unnoticable

You should do a video with advice on how to talk in an interview for your first welding job. I'M more afraid of the interview than I am the certification test. I know how to work but not how to sell myself in an interview.

When it comes to welding, actions speak louder than words. If you know what you're doing, you don't need to say much- be honest, be yourself & most importantly, show um what you can do. If you know what you're doing, you're golden
