I mean if we are sticking to live action; 4. The Man in the High Castle 3. House of the Dragon 2. Good Omens 1. Penny Dreadful - seriously Penny Dreadful cannot be recommended enough! 5 is tricky because so many shows start off fantastic to then stumble heavily afterwards. But Altered Carbon season 1 is brilliant in every sense of the word!
As you have conducted your list with the utmost adherence to personal preference, I feel comfortable doing the same - and so there are a few in my "ultimate" top 5 that are there because of their nostalgic factor to me personally or because I find that I _can_ revisit them again and again (which is a major criterion for me in deciding whether a show really is great in my opinion, or just enjoyable pastime)
1. Stargate SG1
2. Quantum Leap (there is now a remake, but I grew up with the 1989 series and I wholeheartedly stand by it)
3. Farscape
4. Fringe
5. The Expanse / BSG
I love how the green screen reflective light turns you into a green rambling goblin. My list in some order. ST:TNG, Black mirror, New Battlestar Galactica, Dark, Sliders
The Expanse
Babylon 5
Stargate SG-1
Army of the 12 monkeys, the expanse, for all mankind, the first 4 seasons of GoT.
I am still hoping you check out 12 monkeys (the show, not the movie)
Just started the video and I whole-heartedly couldn't agree more: "I miss this type of Daniel thought piece. I miss when he would just come up in front of a green screen, do some weird stuff, and give us opinions." Classic Daniel has returned. Long may he reign.
It's kind of funny how the 2003 Battlestar Galactica was made almost to be an anti-Star Trek. Ronald D. Moore, the BSG showrunner, was a main writer on TNG, DS9, and did a bit of Voyager. When he made BSG, he did all the things he wasn't allowed to do on Trek, like having a lot of conflicts between the crew, doing much darker storylines, and having a lot of continuity.
And The Expanse's showrunner Naren Shankar was also a Trek writer and he did a bunch of things he wasn't allowed to do on Trek.
I feel like DS9 is very much a preview of what Ron Moore wanted to do, he starts showing the contradictions and cracks, even in the Federation, occasionally has antagonists who have a point--Eddington's, "At least the Borg TELL you they're trying to assimilate you," speech, etc., and BSG '04 is what happened when the gloves came off and he was completely divorced from Rodenberry's world.
@@justinwatson16 it's even more amusing now that Ron Moore is making For All Mankind, which is almost a Star Trek prequel.
now this is the Daniel Greene I've come to love, 25 minutes of rambling and a twitch jebait just to talk about a show we would have listened to him ramble about anyways for 10 minutes. brilliant work Mr goblin sir.
Watched Midnight Mass last week because of you. It was so good and so different from what I expected. The forgiveness monologue had me sobbing and shaking, it was so freaking good.
It’s absolutely incredible. Just crazy good writing and performances. Love pretty much everything Mike Flanagan makes. 😄
@CvpArt I watched and loved everything else he made, but I was unsure about this one because religious topics can be triggering for me lmao. But I'm so glad I changed my mind! I'm hoping to make my brother watch it, so that I have an excuse to rewatch 😅
@@sunnyy_ yeah that’s totally understandable. I’m not really religious and don’t mind watching things that dive deep into religion and I thought it was just such an incredibly well done story. And certainly go ahead and make your brother watch it haha. The more Flanagan fans the better I’d say. 😄
That’s so funny I also watched it a couple weeks ago. I knew it was popular a couple years ago and I’m glad I finally watched it because it was so worth it.
@@mysteryman4013 yeah it’s an incredible show 😄
Babylon 5 is a favorite of mine. My dad was a huge fan of it and he got me into it when I was a teenager. It still holds up, even if the special effects don’t. But the world building, the characters, and the themes it tackles more than makes up for that
Babylon 5 is hands down my favorite show of all time. It starts a bit shaky, but not bad. And then it just gets better. And better. And then EVEN BETTER.
The characters have immense depth, while still having a simple likable charm to them (G'kar and Londo each get more character development on their own than you'll find in most franchises). The story touches on timeless themes, and it's portrayal of the darker elements at work on earth are more relevant now than ever. And though each episode is a stand alone episode, they form arcs which build to the most spectacular and climactic moments. Plot elements converge and you feel the world shifting, for better and for worse. Sometimes it leaves you wanting to cheer triumphantly, and sometimes it punches you in the gut. But in those moments, you know nothing is ever going to be the same.
And yes, the special effects are dated. But most of the really bad stuff is in the first season. After that, the space battles work quite well, the ship designs are fantastic and original, and you really only have the occasional composite shot that actually ages poorly.
Lord of the Rings in space is also one of my favorites of all time!
"My shoes are tied, too tight. But it doesn't matter, because I've forgotten how to dance"
-Londo
😢😢😢
Thanks. Mine too. Loved that series
Guys can anyone help which show is that woman 'Bev' at 25:45 from?
Literally the same. I hope to share B5 with my kids the way my dad did with me its such a fun series and criminally underrated.
The Expanse. Farscape. Deepspace 9. Futurama. Babylon 5.
Just went looking through the comments looking for one particular word, and here it is. I am not sure what my top 5 would be, but I know Farscape would have to be on there somewhere.
Farscape. I'd forgotten about that show. Watched every episode
I dunno if anyone in this thread would ever consider watching an anime, but Legend of the Galactic Heroes sounds exactly like something you would love dearly. I would say it's significantly better than The Expanse and somewhat better than Babylon 5 (my second favorite show).
@@IntrusiveThot420 OOh, I would consider it. But just made me wonder if I can include Steins;Gate in my list. Woo I have 2 now.
@@Marwolaeth01 the two are very different! Steins gate is a slice of life drama, LoGH is about a giant space war. XD
Stargate SG1 will always be my favorite. It did for me what Fringe did for Daniel (even though I love Fringe as well). SG1 is my go to example of interpolation world building ie connecting what is new back to what came before. So often when an episode introduced a new element it would connect back to a previous one. Slowly building out a universe of possibilities and it’s not future humanity that’s exploring it, it’s present day humanity and that makes us feel all the smaller since humanity feels terribly out of its depth and out gunned. But we learned the ropes, allied with other species and grew.
I perfer SG:Atlantis but its close and they are basicly the same show SGA just continues SG1
It's videos like this that makes you one of the best content creator on CZcams. You put out good quality videos, well edited, a touch of humor, and informative. Well done Daniel.
Gaius Baltar is the kind of character where I just Do NOT understand how he wasn't thrown out into space by the people in charge. He's the type of guy to get bit by a zombie and not tell anyone.
I was dating a guy who said he identified with Gaius. He cheated on me with my worst enemy (dramatic but true) so this holds together as a theory.
Heck, he is the type to get assimilated by the Tal Shiar and not tell anyone.
This gives me 2020 just-Daniel-in-a-room vibes…this is the Daniel that got me through the pandemic with my sanity. These days I play your fantasy news episodes for my students. And I never would’ve had the courage to start my TT channel without your inspiration. Thank you for all of your awesome work over the years-it’s meant more to me than you know.
Killjoys, Dark Matter, Warehouse 13, Eureka, and Farscape all deserve more respect than they usually receive.
And Cowboy Bebop is basically perfect.
Yes, we miss the Greene Screen (TM).
I was just rewatching Fringe and loved how they foreshadow some things from episode one. It's clear all the character and story arcs were planned and thought out from the beginning. Love it so much.
Surprised 12 Monkeys didn't at least get an honorable mention. Or Altered Carbon season 1, both great shows.
Good pick on Midnight Mass, but I gotta say I kinda expected you to put Dark in here:p
Deserved at least honorable mention. Great show, amazing sci-fi
Hes said in a past video that hes not completed all of Dark yet so thats probably why
Greatest time travel show ever.
Or steins gate
I really should have made an honorable mentions section. My reason was dark is certainly better written than a couple of the shows I picked. But the idea behind this list was most entertaining and I LOVED dark, but wasn’t as entertained if that makes sense.
So glad you’re rebounding back into older kinds of content
This is definitely one of your best video styles because it feels really personal/like just listening to your friend talk about some shit for awhile and also makes great podcast piece for listening to at work ! Keep it up 😁
One moment, Daniel has a calm and insightful voice that is able to properly convey his ideas, then he has the monster voice that just comes out, and I'm here for it.
Also, stargate series is in my top 5 but I understand if it isn't for others
It'd probably get more fans if on streaming platforms they'd cut out some of the early season filler. I mean season 1 has got to be pretty brutal for someone who hasn't seen the series before.
@calebmauer1751 true on the fuller, but it's all in Amazon Prime in the US
THANK YOU SO MUCH for talking about Midnight Mass! It's a masterpiece and doesn't get enough love.
DARK is my number 1 show, but Midnight Mass is a close second!
Two awesome shows. In my top five too!
DarK is also my number 1
Not sure how Daniel didn’t at least mention it after giving it a 9.5/10 in his review
Love this video, Hope to see more like it. Keep up the good work.
Fantastic list, Daniel!
I do enjoy ranty ramblings
Was this a Top 5 Sy-Fi TV Show list without The Expanse? Are you kidding me? smh. ;)
Isnt that the show with the zero g sex scene within the first 10 minutes?
@@kobybarnes3035That’s the one. First ep was meh… after that it’s pretty awesome. Wish they’d finished the entire series though 😢
@kobybarnes3035 you've been on CZcams too long to be young enough to think sex is icky
@@Deimos2k5To be fair, it’s a weird awkward scene. Doesn’t help that first episode. It’s also not filthy. It doesn’t show any naughty bits so it shouldn’t even be a big deal 🤷♀️
Yeah I thought it was fine, it's in the books too so whatever. Totally agree the show stepped up its game a ton later though, would have been on my list.
GREAT VIDEO! So much fun!!
Really happy to see your number 1 spot get love. I remember watching it because the opening and trailer were so magnetic, and then being profoundly surprised and delighted by how good the show was. Banger. Pretty sure I watched it in like 2 days.
What do you hear, Starbuck? - Nothing but the rain.
Battlestar Galactica 2003 is my favorite sci fi show of all time. Every couple of years, I rewatch the whole thing.
So say we all! fantastic show - hated the ending but first show that had me standing as if I was watching a football game.
She was also in the Riddick movie
So glad to see you giving such deserved praise for midnight mass… it is in my opinion a masterful display of the slow burn! One of the greatest, if not THE greatest, limited shows of all time
Its been a minute since we got a manic Daniel video and I am here for it!
Stargate would be in my top 5 for sure. I oddly started watching it out of boredom. I really thought I wouldn't like it. It would be too cheesy. But omg... I fell in love with it hard! Even Atlantis.. which again I was skeptical. But I miss that series so much. I have to admit that I haven't watched Midnight Mass yet. I started to then got distracted. I will revisit it for sure though. Thank you for this video! Your passion is contagious. Expanse was another that started slow for me... but I stayed with it and Boom! I loved it so hard! Was so sad when it ended.
5 - XFiles
4 - TNG
3 - BattleStar Galactica
2 - Expanse
1 - Stargate
But not always in that order :o)
Honestly, Andor deserves to be on a list like this imo, one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time, truly the best Star Wars since the original trilogy
Such a great video! Just *another* great reason for me to put Midnight Mass at the top of my watchlist. Thank you.
i really did miss this type of Daniel content
Well, Firefly is one of my fav. Because the Chemistry between the main cast is just oomph.
Aside from that, among some of my top choices includes:
-Sense8
-The Lost Room
-Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
-Carnivale
For us oldies, Twin Peaks was the first watercooler series, the must see I can remember. And we talked about every episode until the next one came and nobody understood a damn thing. Beautiful. And Agent Cooper's love for coffee is epic.🤣
This was a really great video, gonna be hard not to immediately start some of these
Damn you Daniel Greene. I just watched all of midnight mass instead of getting my homework done. How dare you inform me of this work of art?
THANK YOU for your Midnight Mass appreciation. I bloody love it. It is such a distinctive, evocative piece of work, easily my favourite of Flanagan's shows. Monsignor Pruitt is such an relatable, sympathetic antagonist - brilliant character. And Twin Peaks too, fantastic.
The love for Fringe I see on this channel makes me so happy.
Same for BSG. Both shows are big parts of my early 20s
Yeah this was exactly what I needed after a sub par day, carry on Daniel! ❤
Fecal humor, green screen rant, Diablo "stay awhile and listen". This is why I'm here.
Daniel, speaking about Battlestar Galactica: "I NEED your FAITH!"
Well that's certainly appropriate for that show's ending.
The stand up comedy value of this video is out of the galaxy.
This was really entertaining. It's fun when you do more than just talk at the camera. I hope this video is successful so we see more of it.
I have to give you props. Never heard about your top two choices. I have some binging to do! 👍
have you seen DARK?
Yeah he’s seen it. I believe he reviewed it some years ago. Dark is one of the best shows ever made. Would be the 1st place on my sci-fi list 😄
Rahul Kohli is amazing in everything he's in. Midnight Mass is no exception. First saw him back in iZombie and I've been a fan of his roles, and the man himself, ever since. Put him in everything!
I literally just finished watching Midnight Mass the other day and was floored by how well each of the characters are portrayed and their arcs, so color me surprised when it was your number one. When the video started and you said that one of your top fives was a one season show I immediately thought, "I wonder if he's seen Midnight Mass," then 20 minutes later you bring it up and that was a fun twist to my day!
Gawd this was so good:)
One day my boi stargate will get its love.
I don't know if I've *ever* been as captivated by a TV show as I was the BSG remake. And I can't really imagine ever getting back to that place again. AND... the latter seasons were flubbed so badly that I actually never even finished the series. I kind of can't believe that. Maybe it's time to give it another go.
Oh hey the best dnd channel on the platform.
Babylon 5 is the greatest sci-fi show ever made. I say that, even though the first season suffers from typical genre tv 1st season clunkines, and at least half of the 5th (and final) season is a step down.
Seasons 2-4 are just *that* incredible.
There is a reason Season 1 and Season 5 were not as good. Highly recommend reading Becoming Superman by JMS (his biography), explains so much of what happened.
Season 1 suffered from JMS not writing every episode, studio interreference, and the lead actor having an ongoing mental breakdown, plus the usual first season jank. It's okay despite all of them.
5 mostly suffered Claudia Christensen leaving unexpectedly. I think the Byron arc would in general have worked better if we'd actually gotten payoff to Ivanova's telepath arc as intended. And had JMS known she wasn't coming back, he would have kept Marcus around. So it got hit hard by losing two cast members at the same time... add to that the fact they didn't know they'd get a season 5 meant they rushed some things to finish up in season 4, AND JMS lost his notes in a cab... yeah it was a little janky.
But the lower decks episode, the Neil Gaiman ghost episode, the Psicorp focused episode, the second half with all the payoffs for Londo and G'kar... and the final two episodes... So yeah season 5 is weaker, but it was still overall pretty solid.
@@robbybevard8034 I do hope that a lot of these stories can be continued in the animation movies that JMS is currently trying to get produced :). The Journey Home was a great re-introduction to the characters (and new voice actors) and I believe the second movie has been given the green light.
@@amandaf5664 Oh, I have. It's great. Poor Michael O'Hare...
I agree. Babylon 5 wipes the floor with everything on this list.
Clicked to hear how awesome Stargate was, heard you address why it isn't on the list yet at the very beginning, get on it buddie! 😂
Daniel, have you checked out The Leftovers?
Yeah, if he's this fervent about Midnight Mass, he would love The Leftovers.
I am a pastor in a Dutch Reformed church and fúlly support what you said about the number one, and am not surprised you questioned your own beliefs because of it. Highly highly church approved recommended
Oh… and the músic…. Had me humming/singing along a lót. Actually felt privileged to say I am part of that tradition
The csi burn, is the best part of this video, change my mind. lol.
Kidding. Love this type of content from you and agree wholeheartedly with basically everything.
Ooh I can't wait for the Animated version of this video ❤
I’ll start it:
SO SAY WE ALL!
SO SAY WE ALL
So say we all!!
So say we all!
So say we all!
SO SAY WE ALL
Midnight Mass was very strange for me. I went into it thinking it was going to be about how the real evil is how people can get caught up in radical religious movements, that these things are products of the human mind, and so naturally it would reveal the supernatural elements were either not real or utterly irrelevant. In a way, it still gives that messaging, but the sudden degeneration into the supernatural elements at the end was an odd choice to me. That said, Battlestar Galactica is peak.
See I don’t find it very sudden and I love the medical exploration we get as well. I certainly get though it not being everyone’s taste. The ending, which I love, I absolutely understand can be criticized. I just loved how brutal and resonant with the shows messaging it is.
@@DanielGreeneReviews I admire it as art, because it's definitely a profoundly well done show, and I absolutely respect your love for it!
@@HelloFutureMe now I want you to watch Twin Peaks and try in explain it all in a 4 hour video. Do it! I dare you. lol
Stumbling on this comment conversation between two of my favorite creators is peak! I almost didn't want to interrupt, but I want to encourage the 4 hour long explainer video of twin peaks haha
I think there's pretty interesting implication to this approach. It shows how, in much the same way that faith-based worldviews can be deeply problematic frameworks for navigating the real world (or rather, the natural world), what with all the biases they tend to instill regarding science, morality, etc., they could be similarly problematic even if we knew for a fact that the supernatural existed. If we found out tomorrow that some particular supernatural phenomenon were real (be it gods/ghosts/souls/afterlives/reincarnation/magic/angels/demons/djinn or whatever), one of the most dangerous things we could do would be to assume we already know what that phenomenon is and how it works based on what some religion or other has to say about it. If you're dealing with a force beyond the power of known science, you can't afford to make the wrong assumptions about it. So a mindset of careful inquiry into the truth, through observation and reason, isn't just warranted because we seem to live in a naturalistic universe; it's perhaps even more important if it turns out we don't. I have no idea if anything to this effect was intentional on Flanagan's part, but that was the message I got out of it. (I think my overall reading of the show was a little more broadly anti-faith than Daniel's, although it is definitely very respectful and appreciative in how it presents and handles that theme.)
Love this Daniel. I was wondering what your thoughts on Midnight Mass would be having really enjoyed it myself a whileback.
This was awesome. Thank you.
I adore passion daniel adoring midnight mass. I never get to talk to people about these one and done shows. I'm sitting here watching this man be SO enthusiastic and my mind is just filled with "YES."
I was so excited to see how X-Files was going to rank. Great shows all around.
I had SUCH a good time watching this!!
Daniel…. I do not have sufficient language to communicate how thoroughly I enjoyed this piece. I beg of you to give me more.. Can I getta Kara Thrace!

Can't wait to hear your take on Stargate SG-1! 😀
Love the video
Not sure why this was randomly recommended to me (never seen any of your videos before) but I thoroughly enjoyed this standing in front of green screen rant type video
I love Daniels "Preacher on the TV" energy in this video!!
When do we get wrist brace merch?
1. The expanse
2. Battlestar galactica 04'
3. ST Ds9
4. ST Strange new worlds (so far)
5. Warehouse 13
Oh no please no Strane new worlds with crew acting like they are teens
I have never agreed with a top-5 list more! I have been singing the praises of every one of these shows since they aired (yes, I'm that old). Excellent list!
Yeah, as a religious Christian who had/has a complicated relationship with his faith (as a gay man), I absolutely love Midnight Mass. I love that it both critiques and supports religion and beliefs. It’s one of the most honest conversations about religion and faith that I think I’ve ever seen. It’s so good, and I personally love it so much.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power might be the best scifantasy I've seen, highly recommend.
Animation lends a lot to the writers potential to go insane places with the more fantastical elements
Wait Daniel, when you made the streaming with brackets for best tv shows and now this you mentioned the Twilight Zone from the 80s. What about the OG Twilight Zone from the 50s 60s? That one is almost flawless.
Considered it as one, which then I don't count the latest reboot... cause no one should count that. Not sure why but it's how I think of it.
@@DanielGreeneReviewsI had forgotten about the reboot. Thanks for reminding me, a-hole! Guess I'll go rinse my brain out with acid.
Ok, now I've got to check out Midnight Mass before I hit any spoilers. Thanks! I'm looking forward to the next Fringe video.
I just recently found your channel. I thought this video was entertaining. What is your opinion on the Leftovers of you have seen it?
I did not know I missed these kinds of videos but holy shit did I miss them. I was still debating on whether I should watch Battlestar Galactica but this has pushed me over the edge. Thanks for the video man
Battlestar is one of my favorite shows ever
Probably my top 5 in no particular order:
Cowboy Bebop
Star Trek TNG
Battlestar Galactica
Trigun
Avatar TLA
I wish I could but Game of Thrones on there. It was so good at the start. But... ya know.
Have or did you check out Trigun Stampede it was really cool and dope to look at despite it mostly being CGI
@@SamTheGumMan117 I have! It's really well done. Hope it has a season 2, but not enough of it out yet for me to say if it's going to better than the original or not.
@greath7513 That's great to hear, and the finale left me wanting so much more. My hype for a S2 is high.
I liked Cowboy Bebop
You are so right about the forgiveness monologue.
"You reached through time and you stole from me" is one of the most heartbreakingly brutal lines I have ever heard. What an absolute masterpiece of a show Midnight Mass is.
This video is fracking awesome 👏 🎉
I was there Gandalf, I was there 3000 years ago trying to figure out WTF Twin Peaks was trying to do during its initial TV run.
Then I missed an episode…
My wife is a huge Twin Peaks fan. She was ecstatic when she found out I never watched it. When they revealed Bob she was cheering.
The thing that pushed me away from Battlestar remake (and the newer Stargate series/last bit of Atlantis) is SyFy decided to let the shakiest mfrs hold the cameras without any sort of stabilization.
Very solid list! 👍👍👍
I love the return to this style of video! Thank you for the chaos to appease us goblins
Severance and Silo from 2022 and 2023 respectively are both fantastic, highly recommend!
Re-imagined Galactica is #1 for me. I was well on my way to making Penny Dreadful my #1 but it was cancelled but allowed to finish a final season, but it ended faster than it should have just needing a few more episodes.
So glad to see Battlestar finally geting the love it rdeserves
Good list. You peaked my interest with Midnight Mass. I’d never heard of it.
I binged it last night. Pretty darn good!
Now I might have to circle around to Twin Peaks. I never watched it when it was on air and new, but may have to now
Thank you for putting BSG third. I adore it so much! Strangely enough the first time I watched it I was super new to SF and actually really struggled with it. Came back a year later after reading more SF and getting used to the words and style and ate it up like heroine. Rewatched it a fourth time last year and cried the entire time.
Katie Sackoff is ace. Her Dahl character in Riddick is such a badass 😊
WHAAAAAT! MICAHEL FLANNIGAN IS DOING THE DARK TOWER!!!! IM FREAKING DEAD!
I really appreciate your comments on Midnight Mass. My husband and I had some great discussions about it after watching, and we had many of the same thoughts regarding it's examination of faith. And we ARE religious! I love the way the different characters experience, explore and question faith. It shows us how bad people with their own agendas can really twist things, but it also shows us the good parts like how it can give hope, guidance, a way of life, etc. It's not my own personal favorite show, but I sure am glad I watched it. The monologues DID get to me a bit... But I choose to simply see it as part of the style, much like we'd see in certain stage plays.
This is the closest list I have ever seen on CZcams that fits my own opinion. Now I gotta go watch your #1 ❤️
(Also 100% agree on Firefly)
I really hope you watch Stargate SG-1! Its my personal favorite and I believe it has such depth to the characters and story arcs. Does it have faults and a few shite episodes? Yeah, but it has my heart. 💙 undomesticated equines could not stop me from loving it.

If you like philosophical sci-fi Battlestar Galactica is a must.
Oh I'm so, SO glad you loved Midnight Mass. It was one of my favourite shows EVER. Kate Siegel's monologue on the couch that's interrupted earlier in the show, and finished in the finale... absolutely brings me to tears. When I die, I hope that's my experience. It was one of the most beautifully written, and we'll delivered monologues ever. I agree that it's a masterpiece.
the only thing i can't get out of my head about the end of BSG, is just how much like the end of hitchhikers guide to the galaxy it is ;)
