Oh man I love doing this! In the early 2000s I had a desktop that died and no way to repair it at the time so I grabbed my busted up laptop with bad screen and removed it and used it as a desktop for around 6 months. It was awesome to see friends faces when they would pull out the keyboard tray to use my PC and see half a laptop and get confused. Thanks for sharing the pro tip Phil!

In all seriousness, yes I myself don't like to throw away hardware when I see potential. The screen on my mum's ancient Toshiba laptop went out several years ago... the laptop has served as the family HTPC ever since then, running Kodi and connected to the TV.

You could open the lcd, remove the second wireless antenna, and put it inside the laptop. I've done that to a broken laptop, when i replaced the lcd.
A awesome option, now that it is a fixed laptop, is a external gpu that would probably boost somehow its performance.
I dont know if it has thunderbolt or any pciex for wireless cards, but if it has, it may help a bit.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  Před 6 lety +15

Great idea, didn't think of that... Now with the eGPU, the wireless module is soldered, so it doesn't have a PCIe slot. There is mSATA, but I think that one is only for storage. I'm happy as it it is, but I do want to mod some better cooling, these Apollo Lake chipsets throttle easily.

What does a website making tool have to do with making things out of wood and aluminum??? That is also one of the reasons why I stopped watching Linus tech tips, because of their unrelated sponsorship ads. I can understand that people make sponsored videos and would definetly like to get sponsored myself but then only if the sponsor has something to do with the actual subject of the video or the whole channel. Like Phil, who gets stuff from Electromyne which to me is totally okay because it has a direct connection to the channel and Phil's ideas

She said whatever and didn’t care if I smashed it with a hammer (she told me I could, she didn’t give af about it). But I didn’t. I took apart a old laptop that was running Windows XP, stole the hard drive, and I managed to get the old E310 to boot. Asked my mom if I could buy HL2. Something like this is what I want do with an early 2000s laptop(p3ish). Basically use it a convenient DOS and Windows 98 machine, that takes very little storage space and is easy to setup. You also get around this era of laptop's biggest flaw this way: the awful, ghosting screens.

Those friction hinges can be a real pain in the backside. I've got an Asus Zenbook UX303LN from a few years ago (i5-4210U, GF 840M DDR3) and after about 6 months of use the hinge broke away from the chassis. It uses a similar hinge style to the Chuwi Lapbook, but attaches into a plastic piece that is glued to the chassis. The plastic is extremely brittle and shatters very easily leaving the hinge with nowhere to attach to and nothing to push against.
I ended up self repairing it due to not really being able to send it away for warranty, I needed it for university and I was travelling a long way from home. After several attempts at fixing the problem, my final solution has so far been to remove 90% of the factory plastic and replace it with a different plastic block piece that has been glued into place with epoxy, then screwing the hinge into the new plastic and then filling the remaining space with silicone which effectively seals the whole assembly in place.
Three and a half years later the laptop still works fine and I'd say the hinge works better now than it did when I walked out of the store. It's much more stable and doesn't rock around or feel loose. For a while there I half considered doing exactly what you've done in this video as the UX303LN has both a HDMI and miniDP output, but I needed the portability so I had no choice but to find some sort of alternative repair for the hinge.

Back in 2003 when I was 8 (dammit I feel old now), my uncle gave me a laptop that he had accidentally cracked the screen on, so I did exactly what you've done here, I had it hooked up to an old CRT monitor, and had to track down a serial ball mouse as it only had 1 PS/2 connector which I used for a second keyboard, so I could play emulators and split screen games with my friends. Honestly the thing was a piece of junk, but it was my junk, and it got me through a pretty dull part of my childhood.
I remember programming games on it, but the IDE I used couldn't compile on it for some reason, so I would have to wait till the family computer was free to compile them and see if they were working.

It has S-Video and HDMI out, so I use it to connect to the television, with the base as a sort of keyboard/controller, making it a sort of plug and play. It has a trackpoint mouse in the keyboard so I don't need an external mouse to play games well.
It's great for windows XP gaming on the TV, with a dedicated HD5450 and a dual core first gen i5.
For WiFi, i didn't have any spare mpcie cards left, so I used one of the USB ports for a little cheap WiFi adapter.

I almost did this when my netbook with an atom D525 screen finally broke off, but it turned to be completely useless like that.
I couldnt use wifi at all without its antenna (that sadly was ripped off in half when the screen broke so i couldnt even connect it back to have wifi) then I decided to simply disassemble it, throw what wasnt working in the trash and sell/reuse some of its parts.
Im still using its HDD and (believe it or not) its screen on another laptop.

I tried to replace the microswitch for one of the paddle shifters on my old Logitech Driving Force Pro.
Thanks to hand tremors, I can't solder decently at all. I ended up breaking traces and knocked out the D-pad. Only down on the D-pad worked afterwards.
I have done done some successful projects since then. Including replacing a bad cap in an LCD monitor that had power issues. I still have the wheel in my loft, but I have moved onto a G27. Which I have modded to add rumble to the pedals. That worked first time. Which was a bonus!

Thanks for posting this. As sad as it was for me here's a funny story.
I had just bought a new gaming laptop and I was so excited that I stayed up all night playing games. I fell asleep while playing and and once I woke up I was laying on it and the screen was completely destroyed. I have a 108p monitor so it wasn't much of a problem but the screen was becoming an inconvenient waste of space so I was wondering if I could just kinda snap it off but was scared it would mess something up with the cpu itself.
So thank you, now I can do this without worry.

That looks like it would be a good thrift store/swap meet/flea market buddy to be able to test displays on the spot, assuming there is a handy outlet for the display (in my experience most thrift and inside swap meets do.) Because of it's repair status, it's less likely to get stolen or if it breaks it's less of a loss.

Cool video! I like how you used the keyboard. I have a Dell with first gen i7, full size keyboard and dedicated nvidia GPU. I have a dock for it too with dual outputs for DVI and DP and it drives my ultrawide at full ultrawide (current work laptop with Intel GPU won't). If the screen fails on my, yes I'll use it as a desktop but I never thought about using it's own keyboard. P.S. Its a Latitude E6530, usually under $200 USD. Think of it as high-end retro that is probably overlooked for a good price. Works flawlessly under Win10 too.

Some laptops aren't like that with the Wifi, you might have to buy an antennae and an adapter to get a full size external one. You might be able to glue in the big end of a full size adapter, or make holes for them to where you might even get better reception than stock.

I have an old (circa 2011) Toshiba C650D that was placed foolishly on the floor by me. Either myself or my dear wife stepped on it and broke the screen. I had never before attempted a laptop repair so I had to research the procedure for screen replacement. I fund a superb walk through that basically held my hand and guided me through the inevitable mine field. The intricate process of removing the display from the enclosure and the 40 pin connector worried me the most but it was ultimately not so nerve wracking.
I would wonder if your screen has some sort of flaw or failure involved with the connector as these are rather frail bits of kit and could easily come dislodged or otherwise damaged. Worth a tear down even if just to recover the display.

I bought a Fujitsu Lifebook, an older one with a Centrino, or a core solo. The ebay listing said it was overheating and I bought a new tube of thermal paste. So i pay the 25-30 bucks and it gets here, and it did overheat. So I took it apart like I normally do, cleaned the vents and put fresh paste on. I put it back together using the same parts and nothing happened. A google search revealed that Fujitsu added a fail safe where if you open the laptop it scrambles something inside and the only way to get it repaired would be to send it back to the company. Fortunately it wasn't a huge loss and i know not to open fujitsu hardware XD
