Dropnetting big yabbies with Robbie Alexander

  • This yabbying session was SO AWESOME! Crayfish, crawfish, crawdad, mudbug etc... Theyre all pretty much the same thing all around the world with different names and different characteristics.
    Here in Australia we call these small freshwater crustaceans yabbies. Their scientific name is Cherax Destructor. We have dozens of different species under the Cherax genus here in Australia however it is the Cherax Destructor, or "Yabby" that is the most populat, particularly in Eastern Australia.
    We also have several different species of freshwater crayfish which tend to grow much larger and have a preference for cooler well oxygenated water.
    From what I have read, I believe the Australian Yabby is very similar to the crawdad in America. Although the crawdad has a different genus and species they have similar characteristics.
    I believe the crawdad is actually a signal crayfish which is prone do a disease called the crayfish plague. If anybody reads this knows better, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. I am only going by what I have read on websites.
    Anyhow, yabby, crayfish, crawfish, mudbug, crawdaddy etc... etc... It does not matter. The one similarity that they ALL have in common is that they are AMAZING fun to catch no matter where in the world you are.
    Catching crustaceans in nets is always stacks of fun.

    Love these vids Robbie - subbed! When we were kids mate we used to use Mom's stockings for yabbies. You just chuck some meat in the stocking so it sits in the end then toss it in with a bit of cord tied round the end. Wait awhile then slowly pull it up. The yabbies claws get caught in the nylon and you just scoop them up with a net! Cheers, mate!

    In the U.S. Crayfish are less than 1/4 (the big ones) the size of what you are showing. I have "fished" for them from upstate NY to Northern Illinois. The method you use is how we on the east coast of the US fish for saltwater crabs. I have never eaten a Crayfish as, when I first started taking them for bait, it was from a couple of ponds where Dairy cows drank, peed and pooped.

Until in another video you caught a Yabbie the size of the main lobster we have off the Atlantic coast. Sooo I had to revise my nomenclature of what a Yabbie is to an American crawfish. Now my thinking is getting some Yabbies and raising them in Lousiana and making a bunch of cash. Good God man these things could feed the world.

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 4 lety

      G'day Phil, that's really hard to say mate. If they weren't tied in properly they would fall out as the net was sinking.
      If they were tied in properly, possibly yabbies could have eaten it down enough for the sting to be loose, then either yabbies, turtles or water rats could have lifted it out perhaps?

      @@robbiefishing OK mate I'm not really the fishing type but I'd thought I'd research a bit so I could do a bit of yabbying for the first time. So I'll subscribe just for the joke 😁

    Other than the fact you absolutely butchered my joke, that was a great video my dear friend.
    For those of you who are playing at home the joke was supposed to be:
    Who stole the soap from the bath?
    The Robber Ducky!
