Ep 139 Bad Skipper Behavior | Sint Maarten to Antigua

  • Our guests Jen and Phil arrive in Dutch Sint Maarten, and we sail around the island with them, visiting Grand Case on the French side. This was a blast, and everyone had a good time. But eventually, it was time for us to leave SXM.
    We opt to sail at night for the 90 nautical mile passage, and although it’s a close reach the sailing was excellent. The only thing marring the trip was the constant close calls with other boat traffic.

    Great video Kevin and Wendy. We just chartered a boat down in the Bahamas and it didn’t have an operational anchor light. I think we were the first ones to complain about it. We just turned all the lights we had on the deck on. Great thing about charterboats is we don’t have to do the maintenance!

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  Před rokem

      Indeed. I think I'd use the steaming light (white, halfway up the mast) in lieu of an anchor light. I wouldn't want to use nav lights or anything that would indicate I was under way. But sounds like a great trip. Was it a big group, or just a few?

    Good advice. It doesn't matter what the rule of the water is, always take responsibility to keep yourself safe on the water. Pretend that there isn't a competent captain on the other boat.

    • @SailingTalisman

      The concept is that you don't want two boats steering into each other in an attempt at avoidance. Which is why they want stand-on and give-way vessels. And of course you want to make your intentions clear well in advance. But so many larger boats and ships just figure everyone else will get out of the way, and the number of close calls we've had has been high.

      Hi Alister. We love Jolly Harbor, although it can be buggy at certain points of the year (it shows as a giant mangrove swamp on the Admiralty charts from the days of old). But all of Antigua is awesome. It's kind of our base of operations.

    I noticed that there is an additional tri-color lantern mounted above the anchor light. Here in Europe this may only be switched on under sail in addition to the lights below. This of course greatly improves the visibility of Talisman.
    Thanks for the entertaining video!

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  Před rokem +1

      Hi Albert. Yes, the tricolor and steaming lights are required internationally for boats over 10m if I'm not mistaken. Bareboat charterers in particular often misunderstand how this works. The tricolor is used at night by a sailing vessel under sail (no nav lights, just tricolor). If the sails are down (or even up for motorsailing) and you're under power, you use the steaming light in conjunction with nav lights. You do NOT use both at the same time. It's either tricolor alone, or steaming light paired with nav lights. Using both configurations at once presents a confusing look to other vessels as the appearance can become that of two boats, one superimposed on the other. Anchor lights (360 degree white all around) are obviously used only when stationary at anchor. Captains tests will without exception contain sections where the captain to be will be required to identify shipping, fishing, and recreational boat traffic based on lighting alone.

      @@SailingTalisman Hi Kevin, thanks for your detailed comment. You are correct, it is only allowed to run the tri-color lantern alone under sail, I had confused that with red over green. In the days of filament bulbs it was also important to reduce power consumption.

      Hi David. Yep, Wendy got a dog bite that really bruised up. But all well now. Unfortunately, Talisman is on the hard in Antigua, so we won't be able to attend the Annapolis Boat Show. It's a bummer because we had so much fun last year. But we'll be back on the water in mid November and we can't wait.

    Do the collision regulations have any teeth? Can these vessels be reported?

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  Před rokem +2

      Not unless an actual collision occurs. The larger ships will claim "restricted ability to maneuver", but from experience I know that their maneuverability is better than they let on. It's really more a matter of them not wanting to do it, which is why I highlighted this situation. I should have mentioned that the first boat to cut us off was a 100'+ three masted sailing vessel under way (no sails), and radio communication led to him saying that the owner was adamant that no change of course would be tolerated. He eventually sped up slightly to allow us to pass behind, but only after words were exchanged.

      @@svintheanajones88 Yes. Just be aware of the limitations of AIS. A half mile CPA (closest point of approach) can be just in front of the bow of a large ship. Be sure to keep in touch.
